Book Crystal Chemistry of High Tc Superconducting Copper Oxides

Download or read book Crystal Chemistry of High Tc Superconducting Copper Oxides written by Bernard Raveau and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in copper based oxides is an event of major importance not only with respect to the physical phenomenon itself but also because it definitely shows that solid state chemistry, and especially the crystal chemistry of oxides, has a crucial place in the synthesis and understanding of new materials for future appli cations. The numerous papers published in the field of high Tc supercon ductors in the last five years demonstrate that the great complexity of these materials necessitates a close collaboration between physicists and solid state chemists. This book is based to a large extent on our experience of the crystal chemistry of copper oxides, which we have been studying in the laboratory for more than twelve years, but it also summarizes the main results which have been obtained for these compounds in the last five years relating to their spectacular superconducting properties. We have focused on the struc ture, chemical bonding and nonstoichiometry of these materials, bearing in mind that redox reactions are the key to the optimization of their supercon ducting properties, owing to the importance of the mixed valence of copper and its Jahn-Teller effect. We have also drawn on studies of extended defects by high-resolution electron microscopy and on their creation by ir radiation effects.

Book Characterization and Thermophysical Properties of Bi based Ceramic Superconductors Final Technical Report June 1 1993 September 30 1997

Download or read book Characterization and Thermophysical Properties of Bi based Ceramic Superconductors Final Technical Report June 1 1993 September 30 1997 written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The selection of a research problem discussed in this report by the South Carolina State University and Clemson University faculty teams was based primarily on two factors: (1) There was inadequate single-crystal specific heat and thermal conductivity data for the cuprate high temperature superconductors, particularly the BiSCCO compounds with the general formula Bi[sub 2]Sr[sub 2]Ca[sub n-1]Cu[sub n]O[sub x], where n= 1,2,3. These two thermophysical properties as determined on well characterized samples, give direct insight into the origin of cuprate superconductivity and the microscopic nature of the superconducting state. Moreover, an improved knowledge of these properties is needed for the processing and application of useful superconducting components. (2) There exists at CU extensive expertise and experience in the growth, manipulation and study of the properties of microcrystals (whickers) of various materials, including their electric and elastic properties. Furthermore, there is prior experience in calorimetry in both faculty groups. It was known that whickers of the Bi-based cuprates could be grown from a precursor of quenched glass shards. Although this technique was not fully established, it was believed that microcrystals grown this way could be a source of single-crystal samples for thermophysical property measurements if suitable microcalorimetry techniques and apparatus could be developed.

Book Characterization and Thermophysical Properties of Bi based Ceramic Superconductors Final Report

Download or read book Characterization and Thermophysical Properties of Bi based Ceramic Superconductors Final Report written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The BES supported research at Clemson University and South Carolina State University (1994-1999) on the BiSCCO high temperature superconductors, as well as other research at Clemson and elsewhere on a range of conducting and superconducting materials, revealed substantial evidence that dimensionality plays a key role in their magnetic and transport properties. Previous theoretical and experimental activities have shown that high magnetic fields can have novel and large effects on the ground state of low dimensional systems. Much new physics is expected to result from these interactions, not only the suppression or restoration of superconductivity, but also the enhancement (or even field induced) charge density wave nesting and the destruction of density wave states.
