Book Synthesis and Materials Science Applications of Highly Metallized Polymers

Download or read book Synthesis and Materials Science Applications of Highly Metallized Polymers written by Kun Liu and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ceramic thin films containing soft magnetic CoFe alloy nanoparticles were prepared from a highly metallized PFS with pendent cobalt cluster substituent (Co-PFS) as precursor. Nanogranular in-gap spintronic devices were fabricated using the ceramic thin films by pyrolysis of Co-PFS precursors. The conductivity characteristics and magnetoresistance of the devices are of considerable interest and are under detailed investigation; some preliminary results are presented.Large area highly ordered arrays of magnetic ceramic nanorods were fabricated with precisely controllable dimensions and aspect ratios by nanoimprinting a high-ceramic-yield PFS precursor using anodic aluminum oxide templates.Arrays of ferromagnetic FePt nanoparticle micropatterns were fabricated from thin films of a novel air- and moisture-stable bimetallic polyferroplatinyyne precursor, which can be utilized directly as a negative resist in both electron-beam lithography and UV-photolithography.Polycarbosilanes with pendant cobalt carbonyl clusters (Co-PCS) and nickel clusters (Ni-PCS) were synthesized with control of molecular weight. Co-PCS could be patterned by electron-beam lithography and Ni-PCS was a precursor to Ni-containing NPs.

Book Synthesis and Materials Science Applications of Highly Metallized Polyferrocenylsilanes and the Photocontrolled Polymerization and Oligomerization of Silicon bridged 1 ferrocenophanes

Download or read book Synthesis and Materials Science Applications of Highly Metallized Polyferrocenylsilanes and the Photocontrolled Polymerization and Oligomerization of Silicon bridged 1 ferrocenophanes written by Wing Yan Chan and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acetylide-substituted sila[1]ferrocenophane [Fe(eta-C5H 4)2Si(Me)C≡CPh] was reacted with dinuclear metal complexes to give highly metallized sila[1]ferrocenophanes [Fe(eta-C5H 4)2Si(Me){M2(R)C2Ph}] containing pendent cobalt [M2(R) = Co2(CO)6], molybdenum [M 2(R) = Mo2Cp2(CO)4], or nickel [M 2(R) = Ni2Cp2] clusters. The corresponding highly metallized polyferrocenylsilanes (PFSs) were prepared from acetylide-substituted PFS [Fe(eta-C5H4)2Si(Me)C≡CPh] n using a similar clusterization strategy; these polymers contain at least 25% metal by weight and have been patterned on the micron scale using electron-beam lithography and UV-photolithography.Sila[1]ferrocenophanes [Fe(eta-C5H4)2Si(C≡CBu) 2] (A) and [Fe(eta-C5H4)2 Si(Me)C≡CC≡CPh] (B) were prepared and polymerized. The presence of multiple alkyne substituents complicated the reactivity of these sila[1]ferrocenophanes in platinum-catalyzed ring-opening polymerization (ROP), leading to low yields and bimodal molecular weight distributions. However, both A and B polymerized to give monomodal, well-defined PFSs in photocontrolled ROP.The photocontrolled ROP of sila[1]ferrocenophane [Fe(eta-C5H 4)2SiMe2] (C) using Na[CsH5 ] as initiator was studied in detail. Although ferrocenophane C has two major absorption bands between 300 nm and 600 nm, only the band centred at 480 nm is responsible for generating photoexcited monomers that undergo polymerization. A faster propagation rate was observed at 5°C than at 20°C, presumably due to the more rapid deactivation of photoexcited monomers at higher temperatures. Since the photoexcited monomers are likely solvated, coordinating solvents such as tetrahydrofuran and pyridine are best for this reaction. The living nature of photocontrolled ROP was demonstrated by ABA triblock copolymer synthesis using difunctional initiators.Photopolymerization of ferrocenophane C using 4,4',4"-tri- tert-butyl-2,2':6',2"-terpyridine (tBu3terpy) as a stoichiometric initiator gave the high molecular weight PFS [Fe(eta-C 5H4)2SiMe2]n. When the photolysis was performed in the presence of Me3SiCl, cleavage of both iron--cyclopentadienyl bonds in ferrocenophane C was observed. The iron(II) complex [Fe(tBu3terpy)2Cl2] was formed and the silane fragment [(C5H4SiMe3) 2SiMe2] was released.Photoirradiation of ferrocenophane C and a stoichiometric amount of 4,4'-dimethyl-2,2'-bipyridine gave cyclic PFS and cyclic oligoferrocenylsilanes. Simulated powder X-ray diffractograms of cyclic pentaferrocenylsilane c-[Fe(eta-C 5H4)2SiMe2]5 and cyclic hexaferrocenylsilane c-[Fe(eta-C5H4)2SiMe 2]6 showed that their solid state structures have similar interplanar iron--iron distances as linear PFS [Fe(eta-C5H 4)2SiMe2]n. Cyclic voltammetry studies of the oligomers reveal that oxidation initially occurred at alternating iron centres, and the remaining iron centres were oxidized at a higher potential.

Book Metallo Supramolecular Polymers

Download or read book Metallo Supramolecular Polymers written by Masayoshi Higuchi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the synthesis, electrochemical and photochemical properties, and device applications of metallo-supramolecular polymers, new kinds of polymers synthesized by the complexation of metal ions and organic ditopic ligands. Their electrochemical and photochemical properties are also interesting and much different from conventional organic polymers. The properties come from the electronic intra-chain interaction between the metal ions and the ligands in the polymer chain. In this book, for example, the electrochromism that the Fe(II)-based metallo-supramolecular polymer exhibits is described: the blue color of the polymer film disappears by the electrochemical oxidation of Fe(II) ions to Fe(III) and the colorless film becomes blue again by the electrochemical reduction of Fe(III) to Fe(II). The electrochromism is explained by the disappearance/appearance of the metal-to-ligand charge transfer absorption. The electrochromic properties are applicable to display devices such as electronic paper and smart windows.

Book Self Healing Polymers

Download or read book Self Healing Polymers written by Wolfgang H. Binder and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-03-29 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-healing is a well-known phenomenon in nature: a broken bone merges after some time and if skin is damaged, the wound will stop bleeding and heals again. This concept can be mimicked in order to create polymeric materials with the ability to regenerate after they have suffered degradation or wear. Already realized applications are used in aerospace engineering, and current research in this fascinating field shows how different self-healing mechanisms proven successful by nature can be adapted to produce even more versatile materials. The book combines the knowledge of an international panel of experts in the field and provides the reader with chemical and physical concepts for self-healing polymers, including aspects of biomimetic processes of healing in nature. It shows how to design self-healing polymers and explains the dynamics in these systems. Different self-healing concepts such as encapsulated systems and supramolecular systems are detailed. Chapters on analysis and friction detection in self-healing polymers and on applications round off the book.

Download or read book Metallization of Polymers 2 written by Edward Sacher and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2002-09-30 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the demands put on the polymer/metal interface, particularly by the microelectronics industry, become more and more severe, the necessity for understanding this interface, its properties and its limitations, becomes more and more essential. This requires a broad knowledge of, and a familiarity with, the latest findings in this rapidly advancing field. At the very least, such familiarity requires an exchange of infonnation, particularly among those intimately involved in this field. Communications among many of us in this area have made one fact quite obvious: the facilities provided by existing organizations, scientific and otherwise, do not offer the forum necessary to accomplish this exchange of infonnation. It was for this reason that Jean-Jacques Pireaux, Steven Kowalczyk and I organized the first Metallization of Polymers, a symposium sponsored by the American Chemical Society, which took place in Montreal, September 25-28, 1989; the Proceedings from that symposium were published as ACS Symposium Series 440, (1990). It is this same per ceived lack of a proper forum, and the encouragement of my colleagues, that prompted me to organize this meeting, so as to bring to the attention of the participants new instruments, materials, methods, advances, and, particularly, thoughts in the field of polymer metalliza tion. The meeting was designed as a workshop, with time being made available throughout for discussion and for the consideration of new findings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume documents the proceedings of the Second Symposium on Metallized Plastics: Fundamental and Applied Aspects held under the aegis of the Dielectric Science and Technology Division of the Electrochemical Society in Montreal, Canada, May 7-10, 1990. The first symposium on this topic was held in Chicago, October 10-12, 1988 and the proceedings of l which have been chronicled in a hard-bound volume l As pointed out in the Preface to the proceedings of the first symposium the metallized plastics find scores of applications ranging from very mundane to very sophisticated. Even a cursory look at the literature will convince that this field has sprouted; and there is every reason to believe that with all the research and development activities taking place, new and exciting applications of metallized plastics will emerge. The program for the second symposium was very comprehensive as it included 46 papers covering many aspects of metallized plastics. This symposium was a testimonial to the brisk research activity and keen interest in the topic of metallized plastics. The success of this symposium reinforced our earlier belief that there was a definite need to hold symposia on this topic on a regular basis. Concomitantly, the third symposium in this vein was held in Phoenix, Arizona, October 13-18, 1991 and the fourth is planned for May 16-21, 1993 in Honolulu, Hawaii. As regards the present volume, it contains a total of 35 papers covering a variety of topics ranging from very fundamental to very applied.
