Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers in-depth discussion of design principles, synthesis and thermal behavior of all types of liquid crystal (LC) dimers. The text presents recent advances in the field of LC dimers consisting of different mesogenic units such as calamitic, discotic and bent-core molecules. It starts with a chapter on the introduction of liquid crystal dimers, including their odd-even behavior, basic classification of dimers and common mesophases in dimers. The text shows how the molecular architectures are being used to develop new materials to study a range of interesting phenomena such as the biaxial nematic phase containing rod-like and disc-like mesogenic units. Finally, the text presents perspectives related to technological relevance of these dimers such as dopants in LC display mixtures exhibiting faster relaxation time, strong flexoelectric coupling and others to effect control over the properties of these materials.

Book Synthesis and Mesogenic Properties of Liquid Crystals with Bent Core tail Substitution Geometry

Download or read book Synthesis and Mesogenic Properties of Liquid Crystals with Bent Core tail Substitution Geometry written by David Davis and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Design of liquid crystalline materials has traditionally focused on the synthesis of long, rod-like (collinear) structures, as per the model established by McMillan and coworkers. However, while deviation from this model in the form of bent-core (noncollinear) materials has recently been explored, very little attention has been given to design of materials with bent core-tail substitution geometry. In this study, materials have been synthesized that incorporate a bend in the molecule through substitution of tails on a linear core, and their mesogenic properties have been studied. The classes of materials synthesized include p-terphenyls and p-quaterphenyls with tails substituted in the 3-; 4-; 3,3"-; 3,4"-; and 4,4"- positions. In addition, a number of 1,3,4-oxadiazole terminated phenyl- and biphenyl-core materials have been synthesized with various alkoxy tails at the 4- position of the phenyl terminus and alkyl tails in the 5- position of the oxadiazole terminus. The terphenyl and quaterphenyl materials were synthesized through Suzuki coupling methods, while the oxadiazole materials were synthesized through condensation of a hydrazide and an orthoester, or through the Huisgen rearrangement of a tetrazole in the presence of a carboxylic acid and DCC. While various smectic phases were observed in the collinear terphenyl materials that were synthesized, no liquid crystalline phases were observed in the noncollinear terphenyls, with the exception of a single monotropic smectic B phase. However, a smectic A phase was observed in 4-hexyloxy-3"'-methoxy-p-quaterphenyl. Various smectic phases and a nematic phase were observed in the 2-(4-alkoxybiphenyl)-5-alkyl-1,3,4-oxadiazoles synthesized, but no mesogenic phases were observed in the synthesized 2-(4-alkoxyphenyl)-5-alkyl-1,3,4-oxadiazoles. The nematic phase found upon heating of 2-(4-hexyloxybiphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole to 154.6° C is of especial note due to the utility of this phase in device applications, but the presence of smectic B phases in compounds with methyl tails at the oxadiazole terminus and smectic A phases in compounds with longer tails at the oxadiazole terminus were also noteworthy.

Book Synthesis and Characterization of Bent shaped Liquid Crystal

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of Bent shaped Liquid Crystal written by Kala a/p Shanku Pillay and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of liquid crystal is relatively new area of chemistry, and therefore generates a large frontier of research. The ability of being able to produce high resolution display screens for use in televisions or laptop computers with a very low power consumption, has revolutionised the technological market for this product. As a result of the success of the knowledge already known about liquid crystals and their properties, and their as yet unexplored potential, it is not suprising that there is an extremely large amount of research into the area. In relation to this, in this project, a five ring bent-shaped liquid crystal, which is relatively new compound in liquid crystalline phase, was synthesized using several organic synthesis methods, such as, Diazonium coupling reaction, Williamson ether synthesis, hydrolysis and reaction with resorcinol. The compounds synthesized were characterized through FTIR analysis, melting point, and its physical apperances. Other than that, the percent yield for each compound also have been calculated. The compound synthesized in first step, ethyl4-4-(hydroxyphenylazo)benzoate was a red color solid with melting point at 235 C and the percent yield was 52.07%. In second step 3.542 grams of Ethyl-4-(4-hexadecanoxyphenylazo)benzoate which orange in color with melting point of 135 C was obtained. The percent yield from the reaction was 42.11%. The third compound synthesized was yellow color solid with melting point of 280-290 C and the final compound was 1,3-Phenelyne bis[4-(4-hexadecanoxyphenylazo)benzoate], a pale yellow color solid with melting point at range of 130-135 C was obtained.
