Book The Characterization of Thin Carbon Films Created Via Radio Frequency Plasma enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition

Download or read book The Characterization of Thin Carbon Films Created Via Radio Frequency Plasma enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition written by George Tecos and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various deposition parameters have been adopted to deposit carbon-based thin films on silicon subtrates via Plasma-Enhanced Chemical Vapor Detection (PECVD) with a Radio-Frequency Plasma. We seek a recipe and formulation for carbon film deposition by varying the ratios of input gases and subtrate temperature, with the goal of observing these effects on the deposited carbon film. Characterization of the samples was carried out through various procedures, including the Ion Beam Analysis (IBA) techniques: Rutherford/Non-Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS/NRBS), Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis (ERDA), and Raman Spectroscopy. This data was analyzed to determine the purity, quality, elemental compensation, and interface integrity of each respective sample. We conclude that the films deposited on Si subtrates are polymer-like carbon films with 30-35 at% C and 65-70 at% H. The interface between the film and subtrate was found to be abrupt. The effect of subtrate temperature on the microstructure of the deposited films was found to be inconclusive. This study will lay the basis for future explorations into Western Michigan University produced CVD carbon-based films, and investigate the properties of these unique and profitable materials.

Book Tailored Optical Properties of Graphitic Carbon Nitride Thin Films Via Surface Functionalization of Growth Substrates

Download or read book Tailored Optical Properties of Graphitic Carbon Nitride Thin Films Via Surface Functionalization of Growth Substrates written by Travis Tumlin and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graphitic carbon nitride has attracted much attention in recent years due to its medium size band gap, mechanical strength, blue fluorescence, and catalysis properties. Mainstream methods to produce carbon nitride thin films rely on multi-step exfoliation processes and atmospheric deposition which is unsuitable for large-scale production of electronic devices and sensors where scaling and defect-free materials are required. Our technique utilizes a low-pressure chemical vapor deposition process that allows for one-step synthesis on many different types of substrates with a removal of unwanted reacting gases during synthesis due to the low-pressure environment. This allows us to deposit highly uniform films with thicknesses on the order of 250 nm. By modifying the growth surface chemistry, the band gap of the graphitic carbon nitride can be tuned from a medium gap of 2.87 eV up to 4.1 eV. The fluorescence emission can also be tuned from 425 nm up to 465 nm through growth substrate surface chemistry engineering. As a sensing material, our graphitic carbon nitride thin films have a limit of detection of 50 nM for metal copper ions which has great potential for applications where metal ion concentration is important to monitor such as in the human body.

Book Synthesis and Characterization of Diamond like Carbon Thin Films for Biomedical Applications

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of Diamond like Carbon Thin Films for Biomedical Applications written by Russell Lee Leonard and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diamond-like carbon (DLC) thin films were produced by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) on silicon, fused silica, and silicon nitride substrates. The films produced were either undoped, made using a pure graphite target, or doped, using multi-component targets made from a combination of graphite and silicon, silicon nitride, titanium dioxide, or silicon monoxide. These films were evaluated for their potential use in biomedical applications, including coatings for artificial joints, heart stents, and bronchoscopes. The films were characterized by Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy, ball-on-flat tribometry, contact angle measurements, and spectrophotometry. Film thickness was determined by optical profilometry. Film adhesion was checked by soaking the films in simulated body fluid (SBF) and monitoring the quality of the film surface at varying time intervals using an optical microscope. DLC coatings were produced with a root mean square surface roughness of less than 1 nm and a 0.08 lubricated coefficient of friction. Contact angles of water on the undoped films varied with deposition conditions, ranging from 65 to 88 degrees. Contact angles as low as 25 degrees were achieved by incorporating silicon monoxide dopant. DLC coatings were produced on fused silica having high transparency and showing no delamination after forty-three weeks of immersion in SBF. These results indicate that these films have potential as biomedical coatings.
