Book Synthesis and Characterization of Porous Hydroxyapatite and Hydroxyapatite Coatings

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of Porous Hydroxyapatite and Hydroxyapatite Coatings written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A technique is developed to construct bulk hydroxyapatite (HAp) with different cellular structures. The technique involves the initial synthesis of nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite powder from an aqueous solution using water-soluble compounds and then followed by spray drying into agglomerated granules. The granules were further cold pressed and sintered into bulks at elevated temperatures. The sintering behavior of the HAp granules was characterized and compared with those previously reported. Resulting from the fact that the starting HAp powders were extremely fine, a relatively low activation energy for sintering was obtained. In the present study, both porous and dense structures were produced by varying powder morphology and sintering parameters. Porous structures consisting of open cells were constructed. Sintered structures were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and x-ray tomography. In the present paper, hydroxyapatite coatings produced by magnetron sputtering on silicon and titanium substrates will also be presented. The mechanical properties of the coatings were measured using nanoindentation techniques and microstructures examined using transmission electron microscopy.

Book Hydroxyapatite

Download or read book Hydroxyapatite written by Yoshiki Oshida and published by Momentum Press. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evidence-based literature reviews can provide foundation skills in research-oriented bibliographic inquiry, with an emphasis on such review and synthesis of applicable literature. Information is gathered by surveying a broad array of multidisciplinary research publications written by scholars and researchers. This book is based on a review of about 2,000 carefully selected articles about hydroxyapatite (HA) materials from about 150 peer-review journals in both engineering and medical areas and presents itself as a typical example of evidence-based learning (EBL). HA is very unique material which has been employed equally in both engineering and medical and dental fields. In addition, the name “apatite” comes from the Greek word απατw, which means to deceive. What is actually happening inside the apatite crystal structure is based on the unique characteristics of ion exchangeability. Because of this, versatility of HA has been recognized in wide ranges, including bone-grafting substitutes, various ways to fabricate HAs, HA-based coating materials, HA-based biocomposites, scaffold materials, and drug-delivery systems. This book covers all these interesting areas involved in HA materials science and technology.

Book Synthesis and Characterization of Hydroxyapatite Coatings for Medical Applications

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of Hydroxyapatite Coatings for Medical Applications written by Cong Fu and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Hydroxyapatite (HA, Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2) is the major mineral component of tooth and bone. Due to high biocompatibility and bioactivity, it has been widely used as coatings and additives in bone/dental implants. This thesis investigated preparing hydroxyapatite coatings on metal substrates through an electrochemical synthesis method. The coating was observed to carry negative surface charge. The giant electric polarization is enhanced along the c-axis of the oriented crystal domains, and is a result of a field-induced composition gradient developed during the synthesis. The polarized hydroxyapatite coatings were developed as medical implants. Chemical, mechanical and electrical properties were studied to improve biological response. In-vitro tests demonstrated polarized hydroxyapatite could promote mineralization, cell adhesion, and cell proliferation. To prevent possible post-surgery infections, hydroxyapatite coating was further investigated as a drug delivery vehicle. Electrical properties were significantly improved by preparing a fully dense B-type carbonated hydroxyapatite coating with caxis crystal orientation. Drug loading and release were well controlled by adjusting the coating's surface charge. Besides, a novel electrochemical approach was developed to prepare hydroxyapatite composite coatings with ionic species. Cationic and anionic molecules demonstrate distinct loading and release behaviors. The release from the composite coatings is governed by a combination of diffusion through the coating and ion exchange. Finally, a two-stage electrochemical method was designed to prepare hydroxyapatite coatings that are simultaneously bioactive and antimicrobial. Metallic silver nanoparticles can be formed through electrochemical reduction on the HA coating surface. The amount of silver nanoparticles is directly proportional to the time used for electrochemical reduction under constant current density. Mineralization tests show that the bioactivity of hydroxyapatite was not affected by silver deposition. This study provides an alternative to improve the antibacterial ability of hydroxyapatite coating without using antibiotics"--Pages vii-viii.
