Book Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Conjugated Materials for Organic Electronics

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Conjugated Materials for Organic Electronics written by Toan Van Pho and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shaping new materials that are tailored to meet the specific electronic, chemical, and physical demands in their applications - this is the role of the materials chemist. Although the field of organic electronics has witnessed significant advances since its inception, the toolkit of efficacious materials has been entrusted to a few choice molecular platforms. In an effort to expand this limited library of compounds, new materials based on various polycyclic hydrocarbons have been synthesized and characterized. The pigment quinacridone was incorporated into water/alcohol-soluble electron transport layers that were deposited on top of existing organic-soluble active layers in organic light-emitting diodes and organic photovoltaics, thereby enhancing the transport of electrons and hence the device efficiencies. A strained polycyclic hydrocarbon, decacyclene, was functionalized with three imidegroups to generate a new class of non-fullerene acceptors for organic photovoltaics. A heteroheptacene, dinaphthocarbazole, was characterized for its hole transporting properties in organic field-effect transistors. Finally, various substituted imidazolium-based ionic liquids were synthesized and characterized for their potential use as organic electrolytes in lithium batteries.

Book Design Synthesis and Characterization of Self assembling Conjugated Polymers for Use in Organic Electronic Applications

Download or read book Design Synthesis and Characterization of Self assembling Conjugated Polymers for Use in Organic Electronic Applications written by Kathy Beckner Woody and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conjugated polymers comprise some of the most promising materials for new technologies such as organic field effect transistors, solar light harvesting technology and sensing devices. In spite of tremendous research initiatives in materials chemistry, the potential to optimize device performance and develop new technologies is remarkable. Understanding relationships between the structure of conjugated polymers and their electronic properties is critical to improving device performance. The design and synthesis of new materials which self-organize into ordered nanostructures creates opportunities to establish relationships between electronic properties and morphology or molecular packing. This thesis details our progress in the development of synthetic routes which provide access to new classes of conjugated polymers that contain dissimilar side chains that segregate or dissimilar conjugated blocks which phase separate, and summarizes our initial attempts to characterize these materials. Poly(1,4-phenylene ethynylene)s (PPEs) have been used in a variety of organic electronic applications, most notably as fluorescent sensors. Using traditional synthetic methods, asymmetrically disubstituted PPEs have irregular placement of side chains on the conjugated backbone. Herein, we establish the first synthetic route to an asymmetrically substituted regioregular PPEs. The initial PPEs in this study have different lengths of alkoxy side chains, and both regioregular and regiorandom analogs are synthesized and characterized for comparison. The design of amphiphilic structures provides additional opportunities for side chains to influence the molecular packing and electronic properties of conjugated polymers. A new class of regioregular, amphiphilic PPEs has been prepared bearing alkoxy and semifluoroalkoxy side chains, which have a tendency to phase separate. Fully conjugated block copolymers can provide access to interesting new morphologies as a result of phase separation of the conjugated blocks. In particular, donor-acceptor block copolymers that phase separate into electron rich and electron poor domains may be advantageous in organic electronic devices such as bulk heterojunction solar cells, of which the performance relies on precise control of the interface between electron donating and accepting materials. The availability of donor-acceptor block copolymers is limited, largely due to the challenges associated with synthesizing these materials. In this thesis, two new synthetic routes to donor-acceptor block copolymers are established. These methods both utilize the catalyst transfer condensation polymerization, which proceeds by a chain growth mechanism. The first example entails the synthesis of a monofunctionalized, telechelic poly(3-alkylthiophene) which can be coupled to electron accepting polymers in a subsequent reaction. The other method describes the first example of a one-pot synthesis of a donor-acceptor diblock copolymer. The methods of synthesis are described, and characterization of the block copolymers is reported.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes the Proceedings of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on Conjugated Polymers held at the University of Mons, Belgium, during the first week of September 1989. The Workshop was attended by about fifty scientists representing most of the leading research groups within NATO countries, that have contributed to the development of conjugated polymeric materials. The program was focused on applications related to electrical conductivity and nonlinear optics. The attendance was well balanced with a blend of researchers from academic, industrial, and government labs, and including synthetic chemists, physical chemists, physicists, materials scientists, and theoreticians. The Workshop provided an especially timely opportunity to discuss the important progress that has taken place in the field of Conjugated Polymers in the late eighties as well as the enormous potential that lies in front of us. Among the recent significant developments in the field, we can cite for instance: (i) The discovery of novel synthetic routes affording conjugated polymers -that are much better characterized, especially through control of the molecular weight; - that can be processed from solution or the melt; the early promise that conducting polymcrs would constitute materials combining the electrical conductivities of metals with the mechanical properties of plastics is now being realized; -that can reach remarkably high conductivities.

Book Synthesis and Characterisation of Conjugated 4 8 benzobisthiazole Derivatives for Organic Electronics

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterisation of Conjugated 4 8 benzobisthiazole Derivatives for Organic Electronics written by Gary Conboy and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years the field of organic semiconducting materials has seen rapid growth and development, with keen interest from both industrial and academic research. In the early stages of development, much of the performance improvements were due to increasingly complex device fabrication and processing methods. Research focused greatly on improving known semiconducting materials such as PPV, PT or PAC. Whilst these materials formed a strong foundation for early research, recent findings suggest that they do not possess the optimum chemical properties in order to achieve ultra-high efficiency devices. As such many research groups are now focusing efforts to develop sophisticated building blocks for incorporation into conjugated macromolecules and polymers. In order for these building blocks to find use as electronic materials, it is important to understand the intrinsic properties of each component and use these to derive effective structure-property relationships for use as tools in creating materials which are tailored to a particular role.Chapter 1 includes a summarized description of band theory and the underlying physics of organic semiconducting materials, followed by a discussion of the recent technologies within the field, in particular donor-acceptor type macromolecules and polymers and their related device structures.Chapters 2, 3 and 4 then present novel 4,8-benzobisthiazole (BBT) containing analogues and their incorporation into functional electronic devices. Chapter 2 discusses the synthesis and functionalization of the unit BBT, and development of an orthogonal conjugation pathway. The effect of non-covalent heteroatom interactions - utilized to induce molecular planarity - are then discussed. Building on from Chapter 2, Chapter 3 discusses the synthesis, characterization and device applications of highly-planarised, 4,8-BBT containing polymeric materials. Furthermore, Chapter 4 discusses the synthesis, characterization and device applications of 4,8-BBT containing, donor-acceptor polymers synthesised analogously to that of literature 2,6-BBT polymers. Comparison of physical and electrochemical properties, as well as device performance has been conducted and utilised to confirm the beneficial characteristics of the 4,8-orientation vs. the traditional 2,6-substitution.
