Book Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Associating Water soluble Copolymers

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Associating Water soluble Copolymers written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large number of hydrophobically associating copolymers of N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) or N, N-dimethyl acrylamide (DMA) with perfluoroalkyl acrylates (FOSA) containing between .01 and 1.0 mole % FOSA (with respect to DMA) were synthesized by emulsion and by bulk copolymerization. In contrast with the acrylamide (AM) FOSA copolymers the corresponding NVP and DMA copolymers are soluble in THF and CH3OH in addition to water. This is expected to be of help in the characterization. This report discusses the synthesis, the kinetics of AM-FOSA copolymerization, and characterization.

Book excerpt: Poly(N, N-dimethylacrylamide) (4 samples) and Poly(N-acryl-N- methylpiperazine) (10 samples) were prepared by anionic polymerization in THF at -78° in the presence of Cs or coordinated Li counter cations. Molecular weights (SEC) range from 3800--250,000. The polymers are soluble in methanol, H2O and chloroform and to a lesser extent, in THF and CH2Cl2. Molecular weight distributions were found to be fairly monodisperse (1.11

Book Synthesis and Characterization of Polymers Incorporating N alkyl Urea peptoid Sequences

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of Polymers Incorporating N alkyl Urea peptoid Sequences written by Xiaoping Chen and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation is mainly based on the works of synthesis and characterization of polymer/N-alkyl urea peptoid hybrid materials. Polymers were synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization using thrithiocarbonate and dithiocarbonate chain transfer agents in controlled manner. Poly(N-alkyl urea peptoid) was synthesized via step growth polymerization using symmetric diamine and diisocyanate. N-Alkyl urea peptoid sequences up to sixmer were synthesized through three steps repetition cycles in good yields. Several different hybrid polymeric materials were explored combining the three different material synthetic strategies including polymer conjugates shown in chapter 2, molecular brushes shown in chapter 3, water soluble A-B-A triblock copolymer shown in chapter 4. Firstly, two well-defined statistical copolymers poly(styrene-co-3-azidopropyl methacrylate) and poly(3-O-methacryloyl-1,2:5,6-di-O-isopropylidene-[subscript D]-glucofuranose -co-AzPMA) were synthesized by RAFT. An exemplary N-alkyl urea peptoid trimer was synthesized and conjugated to the two copolymers through the 'click' reaction of the azide pendent group of polymers with the complilanry alkene group at N-alkyl urea peptoid. The polymer conjugates were subjected to further post-modification to generated fluorescent conjugates or water soluble materials. Following the explore of conjugation, N-alkyl urea peptoid was used as comonomer to synthesize linear poly(N-alkyl urea peptoid). The RAFT agent was introduced onto the linear polymer generated by step growth polymerization once again through 'click' reaction. Sequentially, styrene and tert-butyl acrylate was grown from RAFT agents sites that fused onto the poly(N-alkyl urea peptoid) backbone to make block copolymer arms. Upon removal of the tert-butyl groups, the molecular brushes were observed to generate micelles in aqueous solution. The self-assembly N-alkyl urea peptoid was then investigated and conjugated to water soluble polymer poly(ethylene glycol) to produce a A-B-A block copolymer that self-assembled into ribbons in aqueous solution. The final two part of dissertation was about gelling materials studies starting with presenting a synthesis strategy for low molecular weight organogelators (LMOG) using the ureidopyrimidinone (UPy) group functioned N-alkyl urea peptoid. The surprising observation of gelation in DMSO led to extensive investigation of the gelification mechanism studies. Based on the lessons of LMOG, the copolymerization of different T[subscript g] monomers with quadruple hydrogen bonding containing methacrylate was demonstrated suitable to produce polymeric organogelators in the final chapter.

Book Handbook of Industrial Water Soluble Polymers

Download or read book Handbook of Industrial Water Soluble Polymers written by Peter A. Williams and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural and synthetic water soluble polymers are used in a wide range of familiar industrial and consumer products, including coatings and inks, papers, adhesives, cosmetics and personal care products. They perform a variety of functions without which these products would be significantly more expensive, less effective or both. Written for research, development and formulation chemists, technologists and engineers at graduate level and beyond in the fine and specialty chemicals, polymers, food and pharmaceutical industries, the Handbook of Industrial Water Soluble Polymers deals specifically with the functional properties of both natural and synthetic water soluble polymers. By taking a function based approach, rather than a “polymer specific” approach the book illustrates how polymer structure leads to effect, and shows how different polymer types can be employed to achieve appropriate product properties.

Book Polysaccharide Based Graft Copolymers

Download or read book Polysaccharide Based Graft Copolymers written by Susheel Kalia and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-05-23 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renowned experts give all essential aspects of the techniques and applications of graft copolymers based on polysaccharides. Polysaccharides are the most abundant natural organic materials and polysaccharide based graft copolymers are of great importance and widely used in various fields. Natural polysaccharides have recently received more attention due to their advantages over synthetic polymers by being non-toxic, biodegradable and available at low cost. Modification of polysaccharides through graft copolymerization improves the properties of polysaccharides. Grafting is known to improve the characteristic properties of the backbones. Such properties include water repellency, thermal stability, flame resistance, dye-ability and resistance towards acid-base attack and abrasion. Polysaccharides and their graft copolymers find extensive applications in diversified fields. Applications of modified polysaccharides include drug delivery devices, controlled release of fungicides, selective water absorption from oil-water emulsions, purification of water etc.
