Book Synthesis and Characterization of Soluble Poly p phenylene Derivatives Made Via Ni 0 catalyzed Coupling of Aromatic Dichlorides

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of Soluble Poly p phenylene Derivatives Made Via Ni 0 catalyzed Coupling of Aromatic Dichlorides written by Anthony Joseph Pasquale and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The synthesis and characterization of new aromatic dichloride monomers containing benzoyl and phenylsulfonyl pendant groups and the corresponding polymers made via Ni(O)-catalyzed coupling polymerization are described. This work is an outgrowth of the previously described synthesis of poly(benzoyl-1,4-phenylene) from the Ni(O)-catalyzed coupling polymerization of 2,5-dichlorobenzophenone. The new monomers containing benzoyl pendant groups were synthesized by the Friedel-Crafts reaction of 2,5-dichlorobenzoyl chloride and substituted benzenes to give structures that were substituted at the para position on the pendant benzene ring. The substituents include fluorine, methyl, ethyl, and isopropyl.

Book Synthesis and Characterization of a New Polyaromatic Viologen

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of a New Polyaromatic Viologen written by Mohammed Assiri and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis we will describe the synthesis, characterization, and photophysical properties of a new polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) that incorporates a redox active functional group. We have chosen perylene as the polycyclic aromatic framework since perylene is known to have exceptional material properties that we hope will be retained in the new derivative reported in this work. We have chosen the viologen functional group as the embedded redox active site since the dicationic viologens form stable radical cation and neutral redox partners. In addition, viologens, like PAHs, have been shown to have desirable material properties, and have the added advantage of exhibiting both electrochromic and photochromic behavior. We anticipate that N,N'-dimethyl-3,10-diazaperylene will exhibit material properties that will make it a potential attractive candidate for applications in a wide variety of devices including organic solar cells (OSCs), dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs), and organic field effect transistors (OFETs).

Book Systematic Synthesis and Study of the Structure property Relationships of Arylene Vinylene Polymers

Download or read book Systematic Synthesis and Study of the Structure property Relationships of Arylene Vinylene Polymers written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much is known about the electronic, vibrational and steric effects resulting from the addition of differing organic functional groups as side chains, to the parent conjugated polymer. However the same cannot be said about the substitution of constituents of the polymer backbone itself. To this end a study is presented here which systematically studies the effects of naphthalene and anthracene substitution of the properties of poly phenylene vinylene (PPV) derivative conjugated polymers. The synthesis by the Witting-Horner reaction of derivatives is presented whereby the phenylene units of the PPV structure are methodically substituted by naphthylene and anthrylene units to form a homologous series of structures. Alkyloxy substituents are added to all aromatic systems to aid solubility. The 2,6-attachment of the vinylene linkage on the naphthylene and anthrylene ring provides novel structures whose properties may be compared to the soluble PPV derivative POPV. All intermediates, polymerisation starting materials and polymers are fully structurally characterised by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and Raman spectroscopies. The molecular weights of the polymer materials are characterised by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), and these results are supported by end group analysis of the proton NMR spectra. The electronic properties if the polymers are investigated using ultra violet-visible (UV-vis) and fluorescence soectroscopies. The introduction of naphthylene units results in a hypsochromatic shift in the absorption and emission spectra, while the introduction of anthrylene units lead to a bathochromatic shift relative to the naphthalene structures. The observed structural variation of the spectroscopic properties is explained in terms of a combination of the increased conjugation of the substituent acene units and the decreased electronic contribution across the vinylene linkage. The electronic properties of the series are shown.
