This book was released on 2014 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the interest of the synthesis of polymers that have the potential to possess inherent light-emitting properties (LEDs) the synthesis of a novel 1,4-bis(chloromethyl)-benzene monomer, 5-benzyloxy-1,4-dichloromethyl-2,3-diphenyl benzene 78 was carried out. Monomer 78 was polymerized via the Gilch polymerization method to yield, poly(5-benzyloxy-2,3-diphenyl phenylene vinylene) 80. Polymer 80 was characterized by TGA (5% weight loss at 267°, GPC (weight average molecular weight of 7136 Da, number average molecular weight of 6603 Da) , UV-Vis and fluorescence studies (absorbance maximum at 406 nm, emission maximum at 510 nm). The Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons variant of the Wittig was applied in the synthesis of poly(2,3-diphenyl-1,4-phenylenevinylene) (DP-PPV) 3 from 2,3-diphenylterephthalaldehyde 6 and 1,4-bis(diethoxyphosphorylmethyl)-2,3-diphenyl benzene 79, which was synthesized via the Michaelis-Arbuzov reaction. Four trials were carried out to determine an optimal method for the order of addition of the monomers and base. Of these, trial 4, which yielded polymer 3d, was found to the most optimal. Polymer 3d was characterized by TGA (5% weight loss of 319°), UV-Vis and fluorescence studies (absorbance maximum at 430 nm, emission maximum at 496 nm when excited at 416 or 424 nm).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The alkyne 1-(benzyloxy)-4-(propargyloxy)benzene was reacted with 2,5-di(carboethoxy)3,4-diphenylcyclopentadienone to yield diethyl 5-((4-(benzyloxy)phenoxy)methyl)-2,3-diphenylterephthalate. The terephthalate was reduced with lithium aluminum hydride to produce 5-((4-(benzyloxy)phenoxy)methyl)-1,4-di(hydroxymethyl)-2,3-diphenylbenzene. The diol was reacted with thionyl chloride to yield the monomer 5-((4-(benzyloxy)phenoxy)methyl)-1,4-di(chloromethyl)-2,3-diphenylbenzene that has a pendent protected phenol function. The new compounds were characterized by melting point, IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Polymerization of the dichloro monomer via a Gilch polymerization yielded poly[(2,3-diphenyl-(5-((4-(benzyloxy)phenoxy)methyl)-1,4-phenylene) vinylene]. The polymer was characterized by IR, 1H NMR spectroscopy, TGA and DSC. The polymer was insoluble in most solvents but partially soluble in chlorinated solvents.. The solid polymer fluoresced a bluish-green under UV light either in solution or in the solid state.

Book Synthesis Morphologies and Applications of Polyoxometalate containing Diblock Copolymers

Download or read book Synthesis Morphologies and Applications of Polyoxometalate containing Diblock Copolymers written by Sanjiban Chakraborty and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Block copolymers by virtue of their ability to self assemble and microphaseseparation due to the contrast in chemical and physical properties of the covalently linked blocks constitute the essential building blocks towards various nano or micro sized architectures. Polyoxometalates (POM), on the other hand, being an interesting class of metal-oxygen nanometer-sized anionic clusters, are regarded highly due to their excellent electron accepting capability. Combining POM clusters with diblock copolymers can lead to a fascinating class of hybrid materials where the POM cluster not only affect the selfassembly process of various diblock copolymers but also brings its unique electronic properties into the hybrid system. Herein we report the detailed synthesis and characterizations of two hybrid coil-coil diblock copolymers along with two hybrid rodcoil diblock copolymers through polymerization-hybridization approach. The coil-coil diblocks were synthesized via atom transfer radial polymerization (ATRP) of styryl-type monomers and 4-vinylpyridine in sequence. For rod-coil diblock copolymers, the coil block was synthesized through ATRP, followed by the conversion of the terminal bromide to an azide. Ethynyl terminated poly (p-phenylenevinylene) (PPV) and poly (3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) were prepared separately as the rod blocks. The rod block and the coil block were connected through click chemistry to yield rod-coil diblock copolymers. After removing the phthalimide protecting groups to regenerate aryl amines, POM clusters were finally linked to the coil block of all diblock copolymers to yield the targeted hybrid diblock copolymers. The covalent cluster attachment was confirmed by UV-Vis spectroscopy, FTIR and cyclovoltammetry measurements. The structures, solution and film optical properties, self-assembled morphologies and solar cell performances of these hybrids have been studied. It has been found that solar cell devices based on hybrid P3HT exhibited rather poor performances. Fluorescence dynamic studies indicate that the photoinduced electron transfer process from the rod block to pendant POMs is quite inefficient which may account for the poor device performance. Though the self-assembly process of these hybrid diblock copolymers and the preliminary morphologies has been demonstrated, detailed and systematic study of morphological control requires further extensive research.

Book Synthesis Characterization and Morphology of a Cis 1 4 Polyisoprene Poly N Butylmethacrylate Diblock Copolymer

Download or read book Synthesis Characterization and Morphology of a Cis 1 4 Polyisoprene Poly N Butylmethacrylate Diblock Copolymer written by Robert E. Cohen and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Homogeneous anionic polymerization methods were employed to synthesize a diblock copolymer of the form (A)(n)-b-(B)(m) in which repeat unit A is isoprene, B is n-butylmethacrylate and b is a single unit of 1,1 diphenylethylene. Various physical-chemical characterization methods were employed to determine that the molecular weights of the A and B blocks are 80,000 and 160,000 g/mole respectively. NMR spectra indicated that the poly n-butylmethacrylate moiety is composed predominantly of syndiotactic triads. Thermal analysis and dynamic mechanical testing were used to determine the polyisoprene and poly n-butylmethacrylate glass transition temperatures, which were around -70 and 20 C respectively; the poly n-butylmethacrylate transition observed in the viscoelastic experiments was unusually broad, covering more than 75 C from onset to completion. Thin films of the diblock copolymer prepared by solvent evaporation casting methods, using a variety of solvents and a wide range of solvent evaporation rates, showed a variety of morphologies in transmission electron micrographs. Most notable among these was a structure obtained in rapid-evaporation castings which contained relatively large regions of homogeneous diblock copolymer embedded in the microphase-separated material. While these homogenized regions remain unchanged indefinitely in the bulk material at room temperature, they tend to decompose to the stable microphase-separated material upon heating or upon addition of solvent. This book was released on 2013 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An SN2 reaction between 1,3-dichloroacetone and benzenesulfinic acid sodium salt was carried out to produce 1,3-bis(phenylsulfonyl)acetone. A crystal structure for 1,3-bis(phenylsulfonyl)acetone was obtained. The SN2 reaction was followed by a condensation reaction with benzil but this did not yield a condensation product. A photo-active compound, 2,5-dicarboethoxy-3,4-di(4-methylphenyl)cyclopentadienone, was synthesized and was shown to undergo a unique, solid-state dimerization. Several reactions involving the ester functions were carried out but these did not yield the expected products, instead, structural rearrangements seemed to predominate. An asymmetric cyclopentadienone, 2-carbomethoxy-5-methyl-3,4-diphenylcyclopentadienone, was synthesized and it was reacted with norbornadiene to produce methyl 4-methyl-2,3-diphenylbenzoate. The benzoate was reduced to 4-methyl-2,3-diphenylbenzyl alcohol that was either converted to 4-methyl-2,3-diphenylbenzyl chloride with thionyl chloride or oxidized with manganese dioxide to 4-methyl-2,3-diphenylbenzaldehyde. The benzaldehyde derivative was reacted with a phenylated bisphosphonium salt to produce an oligomeric PPV derivative, 1,4-bis(2,3-diphenyl-4-methylphenyl)ethenyl-2,3-diphenylbenzene.
