Book Boron Containing Vinyl Aromatic Polymers

Download or read book Boron Containing Vinyl Aromatic Polymers written by Kshitij K. Parab and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Novel luminescent polystyrene-based organoborane polymers were synthesized via facile silicon-boron exchange reactions with boron tribromide. The Lewis acidity as well as the photophysical properties of the polymers were then fine tuned by variation of the organic pi-system. The key step is a selective boron-tin exchange that allows for controlled and selective replacement of one of the bromine substituents by the chromophoric system, followed by substitution of the second bromine by a sterically hindered aryl group. The polymers and model compounds were fully characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy. Molecular weights were determined by GPC. DSC and TGA were used to determine their thermal properties. Both polymers and model systems are highly emissive and UV-visible and fluorescence spectroscopy were used to ascertain their photophysical characteristics. To probe the use of the polymers as potential anion sensors, they were subjected to complexation with fluoride ([Bu4N]F in THF) and their complexation was studied by 11B NMR as well as UV-vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. To counter the oxidative degradation of the systems a new strategy was adapted in which we prepared stannylcarbazole precursors which would act as chromophores. To further enhance the stability of the boron center in these systems the mesityl group was replaced by the bulkier 1,3,5-triisopropylphenyl group. The models and polymers synthesized show superior stability as compared to the compounds synthesized earlier. The compounds are also highly emissive in the blue region. Systems that contain electroactive ferrocenyl groups in the side-chain of polystyrene were also synthesized. Cyclic voltammetry studies confirm the electroactive nature of these polymers. A quasi-reversible boron redox couple and a ferrocene-centered redox process were observed. Finally, a trimethylsilyl-functionalized vinyl bithiophene monomer was prepared. This monomer was polymerized by a variety of methods including standard free radical polymerization (BPO, AIBN), via nitroxide-mediated polymerization (NMP) and also by anionic polymerization. Moderate molecular weights in the range of 4000 - 9000 were obtained.

Book Synthesis and Characterization of New Boron Nitrogen and Boron Nitrogen Phosphorus Systems

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of New Boron Nitrogen and Boron Nitrogen Phosphorus Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The preparative and derivative chemistry of organoborane compounds that contain silicon-nitrogen functional groups is both diverse and synthetically useful. The wide variety of reactions that can occur at boron, in combination with facile cleavage of the Si-N bond, makes them potential precursors to polymeric B-N systems. We report here on the synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of three representative examples of the title systems of general types 1 and 2. Some of these systems are being studied as the precursors to new types of inorganic-organic hybrid polymers and/or novel ring systems.

Book Synthesis and Characterization of Highly Porous Borazine linked Polymers Via Dehydrogenation dehydrocoupling of Borane amine Adducts and Their Applications to Gas Storage

Download or read book Synthesis and Characterization of Highly Porous Borazine linked Polymers Via Dehydrogenation dehydrocoupling of Borane amine Adducts and Their Applications to Gas Storage written by Karl Jackson and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new class of porous polymers has been designed and successfully synthesized by thermal dehydrogenation of several polytopic arylamine-borane adducts and has been designated Borazine-Linked Polymers (BLPs). The polymers reported are constructed of linear, triangular, and tetrahedral amine building units to form 2D and 3D frameworks. The boron sites of the pores are aligned with hydrogen atoms contrasted with the recently reported halogenated BLPs which consist of pore channels aligned with bromine or chlorine atoms. One of the reported BLPs, BLP-2(H), was proven to be crystalline by PXRD, matching the experimental pattern to theoretical patterns calculated from modeled structures. BLPs were found to be thermally stable by thermogravimetric analysis, decomposing at temperatures ~450̊ ̊C. Infrared spectroscopy and 11B MAS NMR spectra confirm the formation of borazine as reported in previous borazine-containing polymers and 13C CP MAS spectra confirmed that the structural integrity of the amine building units were maintained and incorporated in the framework of BLPs. Nitrogen isotherms revealed that BLPs exhibit high surface areas ranging from 1132-2866 m2/g (Langmuir) and 400-2200 m2/g (Brunauer-Emett-Teller, BET) with pore sizes from 7-14 [angstrom]. Hydrogen, methane, and carbon dioxide measurements were performed at low pressure (up to 1 atm) and were found to be among the best of organic polymers. High pressure isotherms (up to 40 bar) were also taken at various temperatures ranging from 77-298 K. Isosteric heats of adsorption were calculated using the virial method at low pressures. Gas storage performance of BLPs at 40 bar were found to be: 14.7-42.5 mg/g for H2 uptake at 77 K; 348.9-717.4 mg/g for CO2 uptake at 298 K; and 40.8-116.1 mg/g for CH4 uptake at 298 K. The CO2/CH4 selectivity of BLPs at 298 K up to 40 bar was calculated using the Ideal Adsorbed Solution Theory (IAST) to determine their performance as carbon capture and sequestration materials. Additionally, non-borazine containing nanoporous organic polymers (NPOFs) consisting of all carbon and hydrogen atoms were also synthesized and subjected to low pressure hydrogen storage measurements. The results show that though NPOFs generally exhibit higher surface areas (SALang = 2423-4227 m2/g), the H2 storage capacity of BLPs is superior.

Book Comprehensive Inorganic Chemistry II

Download or read book Comprehensive Inorganic Chemistry II written by and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2013-07-23 with total page 7694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive Inorganic Chemistry II, Nine Volume Set reviews and examines topics of relevance to today’s inorganic chemists. Covering more interdisciplinary and high impact areas, Comprehensive Inorganic Chemistry II includes biological inorganic chemistry, solid state chemistry, materials chemistry, and nanoscience. The work is designed to follow on, with a different viewpoint and format, from our 1973 work, Comprehensive Inorganic Chemistry, edited by Bailar, Emeléus, Nyholm, and Trotman-Dickenson, which has received over 2,000 citations. The new work will also complement other recent Elsevier works in this area, Comprehensive Coordination Chemistry and Comprehensive Organometallic Chemistry, to form a trio of works covering the whole of modern inorganic chemistry. Chapters are designed to provide a valuable, long-standing scientific resource for both advanced students new to an area and researchers who need further background or answers to a particular problem on the elements, their compounds, or applications. Chapters are written by teams of leading experts, under the guidance of the Volume Editors and the Editors-in-Chief. The articles are written at a level that allows undergraduate students to understand the material, while providing active researchers with a ready reference resource for information in the field. The chapters will not provide basic data on the elements, which is available from many sources (and the original work), but instead concentrate on applications of the elements and their compounds. Provides a comprehensive review which serves to put many advances in perspective and allows the reader to make connections to related fields, such as: biological inorganic chemistry, materials chemistry, solid state chemistry and nanoscience Inorganic chemistry is rapidly developing, which brings about the need for a reference resource such as this that summarise recent developments and simultaneously provide background information Forms the new definitive source for researchers interested in elements and their applications; completely replacing the highly cited first edition, which published in 1973

Book Organoboron Functionalized Conjugated Polymers

Download or read book Organoboron Functionalized Conjugated Polymers written by Haiyan Li and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thiophene- and fluorene-based polymers represent two important classes of semiconducting materials and their applications in organic light emitting devices, photovoltaics, organic field-effect transistors and chemical sensors have been extensively investigated. Electron-deficient organoboranes provide interesting characteristics including their ability to act as efficient emitters and charge transport materials in optoelectronic devices and as sensory element for nucleophiles. It is desirable to bring together these two classes of building blocks within one system to form a variety of materials with advantageous properties. We have explored two alternative design principles: (i) the embedding of boron into the conjugated polymer main chain and (ii) the direct attachment of boron as a side group to the conjugated polymer backbone. Three different projects were pursued in this general area: 1. The reactive polymer scaffold poly(fluorenylene(bromo)borane) (PFBBr) with alternating fluorene and borane moieties was prepared via B-Sn exchange reaction. Starting from PFBBr as a universal precursor, we obtained a series of polymers for which we can tune the stability, thermal characteristics, and fluorescence behavior by simple post-polymerization modification reactions. By using the same synthetic strategy, we have also prepared a main chain donor-acceptor type polymer based on a combination of fluorene and triphenylamine. As expected for an ambipolar system, this polymer exhibits a remarkable solvatochromic effect in the emission and can be oxidized and reduced electrochemically at moderate potentials. 2. In an alternative approach, a series of polythiophenes with diarylboryl functional groups attached at the lateral positions have been developed in our group by Anand Sundararaman via a post-polymerization borylation route. The electrical and structural properties of the polymer and the chemical stability can be further tuned by variation of the aryl groups on boron, for which the redox active ferrocenyl and sterically bulky Mes or Tip groups were introduced. To further investigate how the main chain chemical structure influences the optoelectronic properties of this type of polymers, we have prepared a class of bis(dimesitylboryl)bithiophene-based alternating copolymers, involving different aromatic systems such as fluorene, carbazole and triphenylamine derivatives. 3. Organoboron quinolate chelates are promising as light emitting materials because of their high thermal stability and efficient luminescence. We have prepared two new polymers with both the quinolate ligands and boron centers embedded in the main chain. The polymers were obtained by a simple one-step procedure that involves metal-free boron-induced ether cleavage reactions. All the polymers have been characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and their thermal behavior has been studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Their photophysical and electrochemical properties and electronic structures have been investigated by UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and theoretical calculations for the respective model systems. The tri-coordinate organoboron compounds that were prepared are promising sensory materials and their response towards different anions has been evaluated by UV-vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy.
