Download or read book Drug Discovery and Evaluation Methods in Clinical Pharmacology written by H.Gerhard Vogel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-12-15 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drug Discovery and Evaluation has become a more and more difficult, expensive and time-consuming process. The effect of a new compound has to be detected by in vitro and in vivo methods of pharmacology. The activity spectrum and the potency compared to existing drugs have to be determined. As these processes can be divided up stepwise we have designed a book series "Drug Discovery and Evaluation" in the form of a recommendation document. The methods to detect drug targets are described in the first volume of this series "Pharmacological Assays" comprising classical methods as well as new technologies. Before going to man, the most suitable compound has to be selected by pharmacokinetic studies and experiments in toxicology. These preclinical methods are described in the second volume „Safety and Pharmacokinetic Assays". Only then are first studies in human beings allowed. Special rules are established for Phase I studies. Clinical pharmacokinetics are performed in parallel with human studies on tolerability and therapeutic effects. Special studies according to various populations and different therapeutic indications are necessary. These items are covered in the third volume: „Methods in Clinical Pharmacology".

Download or read book Stable Isotope Forensics written by Wolfram Meier-Augenstein and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-09-19 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides the first comprehensive, overview and guide to forensic isotope analysis, an exciting new application of stable isotope analytical techniques. Topics are introduced using examples and real-life case studies such as food quality control where isotope analysis has already had a major impact, in terms of consumer protection, These examples illustrate the underlying principles of isotope profiling or fingerprinting. A section comprising actual criminal case work is used to build a bridge between the introduction and the technical section to encourage students to engage with this novel departure for analytical sciences while at the same time providing hands-on examples for the experienced researcher and forensic practitioner to match problems and success stories encountered with the topics discussed in the technical section. What little information is available on the subject in book form so far, has been published as individual chapters in books dealing either with mass spectrometry, forensic geoscience or environmental forensics, this is the first book to focus on the entire spectrum of forensic isotope analysis and will be an invaluable reference to both researchers in the field and forensic practitioners.

Download or read book Mediterranean Diets written by Artemis P. Simopoulos and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to popular belief, there is no such thing as one Mediterranean diet: This geographic region includes several nations with varied cultures, traditions, incomes and dietary habits, resulting in a wide variation of dietary patterns. The present volume focuses on the latest research data from basic science and clinical intervention studies that indicate that a balanced ratio of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids and a high antioxidant intake from fruits and vegetables, along with olive oil, contribute to a lower rate of heart disease and increased longevity. These benefits are especially pronounced in the population of Crete, indicating that this diet is particularly healthy. Moreover, descriptions of the diets of Greece, Italy, Spain and the Maghreb are given for the first time, pointing to their differences as well as to their common dietary patterns; these are followed by chapters on the nutritional and metabolic contributions of antioxidants, wine, olive oil and fatty acids.
Download or read book Organic Pollutants written by C. H. Walker and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2001-04-26 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Organic pollutants continue to be a major hazard in the environment. Often difficult to measure accurately and to deal with effectively, these compounds feature more and more prominently in courses on environmental toxicology and environmental sciences. This much needed book is a companion to the highly praised Principles of Ecotoxicology. It covers organic pollutants in greater depth and detail than has been covered in a textbook before. The first part covers issues such as: chemical warfare metababolism of pollutants in animals and plants environmental fate, and effects within ecosystems This is followed by discussion of particular pollutants such as: organochloride insecticides PCBs dioxins organometallic compounds polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons anticoagulant rodenticides amongst others. The book concludes with coverage of ecotoxicity testing, biomarkers and bioassays and future prospects for improved assessment of the dangers these compounds pose. It breaks new ground in offering a concise source of information on these compounds at a level suitable for senior undergraduates and postgraduates. Professionals working within the fields of environmental toxicology and environmental science will also find it a valuable reference.
