Book excerpt: The use of pattern recognition has become more and more important in seismic oil exploration. Interpreting a large volume of seismic data is a challenging problem. Seismic reflection data in the one-shot seismogram and stacked seismogram may contain some structural information from the response of the subsurface. Syntactic/structural pattern recognition techniques can recognize the structural seismic patterns and improve seismic interpretations. The syntactic analysis methods include: (1) the error-correcting finite-state parsing, (2) the modified error-correcting Earley's parsing, (3) the parsing using the match primitive measure, (4) the Levenshtein distance computation, (5) the likelihood ratio test, (6) the error-correcting tree automata, and (7) a hierarchical system. Syntactic seismic pattern recognition can be one of the milestones of a geophysical intelligent interpretation system. The syntactic methods in this book can be applied to other areas, such as the medical diagnosis system. The book will benefit geophysicists, computer scientists and electrical engineers. We use and teach com puter aided techniques of mathematical simulation and of pattern recogni tion. Life would be much simpler if we had a suitable text book with methods and computer programmes which we could keep referring to. Therefore, we have presented here material that is essential for mathematical modelling of some complex geological situations, with which earth scientists are often confronted. The reader is introduced not only to the essentials of computer modelling, data analysis and pattern recognition, but is also made familiar with the basic understanding with which they can plunge into when solving related and more complex problems. This book first makes a case for seismic stratigraphy and then for pattern recognition. Chapter 1 provides an extensive review of applications of pattern recognition methods in oil exploration. Simulation procedures are presented with examples that are fairly simple to understand and easy to use on the computer. Several geological situations can be formulated and simulated using the Monte Carlo method. The binary lithologic sequences, discussed in Chapter 2, consist of alternating layers of any two of sand, shale and coal.

Professor Huang's life of inquiry has spanned a number of decades as his work on imaging problems began in 1960's. Over these 40 years, he has made many fundamental and pioneering contributions to nearly every area of this field. Professor Huang has received numerous Awards, including the prestigious Jack Kilby Signal Processing Medal from IEEE. He has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering, and named Fellow of IEEE, Fellow of OSA, Fellow of IAPR, and Fellow of SPIE. Professor Huang has made fundamental contributions to image processing, pattern recognition, and computer vision: including design and stability test of multidimensional digital filters, digital holography; compression techniques for documents and images; 3D motion and modeling, analysis and visualization of the human face, hand and body, multi-modal human-computer interfaces; and multimedia databases. Many of his research ideas have been seminal, opening up new areas of research. Professor Huang is continuing his contribution to the field in the new millennium This book is intended to highlight his contributions by showing the breadth of areas in which his students are working. It provides the necessary background information concerning diatom research, useful for both diatomists and non-diatomists. It deals with the development of electronic databases, image preprocessing, automatic contour extraction, the application of existing contour and ornamentation features and the development of new ones, as well as the application of different classifiers (neural networks, decision trees, etc.). These are tested using two image sets: (i) a very difficult set of Sellaphora pupula with 6 demes and 120 images; (ii) a mixed genera set with 37 taxa and approximately 800 images. The results are excellent, and recognition rates well above 90% have been achieved on both sets. The results are compared with identification rates obtained by human experts. One chapter of the book deals with automatic image capture, i.e. microscope slide scanning at different resolutions using a motorized microscope stage, autofocusing, multifocus fusion, and particle screening to select only diatoms and to reject debris. This book is the final scientific report of the European ADIAC project (Automatic Diatom Identification and Classification), and it lists the web-sites with the created public databases and an identification demo.
