Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of four optical arrays were installed in the surf zone near Hueneme, California for a period of 10 days to record the changes in bottom elevation, variations in suspended sand concentration versus height above the substrate, wave data and other environmental factors continuously with time. These records enabled analysis of variations in surf zone transport and the comparison of these frequencies with the incoming wave spectrum. It is evident from this experiment that the sediment transport system is sensitive to frequencies down to at least 1 or 2 cycles per second and up to the long tidal frequencies at the far end of the wave spectrum. There are also responses typical of particular sections of the surf zone. These variations occur in the changes in substrate level and in the concentrations of suspended sand. Download or read book Geomorphological Processes written by E. Derbyshire and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-13 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book originated from a proposal by one author (J. R. H.) who was subsequently joined by a second (E. D.) and then by a third (K. J. G.). It has taken longer to produce than we expected because of the complications imposed by the distances which the authors have succeeded in putting between themselves during the past three years. The basic objective was to produce a short book which would introduce geomorphological processes to students in the first or second year of their higher education courses. We believed that there was a need for such a book reviewing a range of geomorphological processes which would offer a prelude to the symphonies which are available in books devoted to specific processes and their effects, many of which are sign posted in the lists of further reading at the end of each chapter. We are aware that the range of suitable preludes is wide, but we have endeavoured to compose one which expresses at least some of the recent achieve-ments in the study of geomorphological processes. Emphasis is placed on the nature of processes and upon their controls but the effects of processes in creating landforms are not reviewed in any detail. In addition to the selected references at the end of each chapter, we have collected a bibliography of works cited at the end of the book but this is not intended to be as exhaustive as the references collated in more advanced works.

Book excerpt: Suspended sediment concentration was measured in 235 breaking waves on undeveloped beaches near Price Inlet, South Carolina, U.S.A., using portable in situ bulk water samplers. The purpose of the study was to determine what factors control the distribution of suspended sediment in the breaker zone. The final conclusion inferred from accumulated data is that sediment transport is highly dependent on breaker type. Net offshore movement and equilibrium profiles can be qualitatively explained on the basis of variations in wave form, beach slope and suspended sediment concentration. Longshore transport rates are dependent not only on wave height, but on breaker type, which can be quantified to reasonable certainty by the simple ratio, d sub b/H sub b, relative wave height.
