Book The Rice Rats of North America Genus Oryzomys Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Rice Rats of North America Genus Oryzomys Classic Reprint written by Edward Alphonso Goldman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rice Rats of North America (Genus Oryzomys) Species inhabiting forested areas usually become very abundant in clearings where a ground cover is allowed to grow. Rice rats appar ently are not so injurious to crops as some other rodents, but like the cotton rats and meadow mice increase locally to excessive num bers and then consume, in the aggregate, very large quantities of forage. Methods of poisoning that have proved effective in checking the ravages of meadow mice could probably be utilized with similar success in the control of rice rats. Owing to their nocturnal habits these mice are preyed upon by owls and doubtless by many carnivor ous mammals. The rice rats and allied members of the great murine family to which they belong are the most numerous of American mammals, and their economic relations should be better known. Book Holocene Rice Rats Genus Oryzomys from the Upper Mississippi River Drainage Basin

Download or read book Holocene Rice Rats Genus Oryzomys from the Upper Mississippi River Drainage Basin written by Hugh H. Genoways and published by . This book was released on 2023-07-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The expansion and collapse of the geographic range of the Texas rice rat (Oryzomys texensis) in the upper Mississippi River drainage basin at the end of the Holocene was a unique event in North American mammals. In a period of about 4000 years with a point of origin near the American Bottom in Illinois, these small rodents extended their geographic range in a straight-line distance of over 950 km to the west into Nebraska and the same distance to the east into Pennsylvania. Then in less than 400 years this range expansion collapsed back to a point where the northern-most edge of the modern geographic range of these rice rats is in southern Illinois. It is concluded that no single factor led to this geographic range expansion, but it was a complex interplay of changes in Native American populations, culture, foodways, riverine habitats, and climate along with the impact of kleptoparasitism and passive anthropochory. The collapse of the expanded geographic range of Texas rice rats appears to have occurred between AD 1400 and AD 1600, but it did not occur simultaneously throughout the geographic range. This was not an orderly range contraction, but a collapse of populations in place with many local extinction events. These rice rat populations declined beginning with the onset of the Little Ice Age, which brought a colder and wetter climate that caused crop failures resulting from droughts, cold temperatures, or shortened growing seasons. These conditions stressed the dietary reserves of the human populations and thereby the rice rat populations. These conditions, particularly droughts, were harmful to the growing of maize, which served as the primary food resource of the Native Americans and the associated populations of rice rats. It is proposed that the pre-1910 records of rice rat from unusual localities compared to the modern geographic range in southwestern Ohio, Kentucky, and Kansas represent the final extinction events of these Holocene rice rat populations.

Book Asdell s Patterns of Mammalian Reproduction

Download or read book Asdell s Patterns of Mammalian Reproduction written by Virginia Douglass Hayssen and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 1036 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the appearance of the second edition of Sydney A. Asdell's widely used Patterns of Mammalian Reproduction in 1964, the field of reproductive physiology has expanded dramatically. Accordingly, this revision adopts a different structure from previous editions, substituting empirical delineations for physiological interpretations. With the emphases now on a presentation of the published facts of mammalian reproduction, it provides a thorough compilation of what is known about the basic reproductive biology of each of the 4300 mammalian species. To gather information, the authors examined more than 20,000 publications, dating up to 1992. They used primary sources as much as possible, supplementing them with English translations of Russian, Finnish, Chinese, and Japanese journals. The data are presented in taxonomic order. Each familial account summarizes the pattern of reproduction for the family and provides lists of citations arranged by topic of the literature on the endocrinology, reproductive anatomy, and reproductive physiology of the family. Following each account is a tabular listing of species-specific data for neonatal mass and size, weaning mass and size, litter size, age at sexual maturity, estrous cycle length, gestation length, lactation length, number of litters per year, and seasonality of reproduction. For each of these reproductive variables, the range of data gleaned from the literature is given, together with the source of each value listed.Virginia Hayssen is Assistant Professor of Biology at Smith College. Ari Van Tienhoven is Professor of Animal Physiology, Emeritus, at Cornell University. Ans Van Tienhoven assisted in the compilation of data for the book.
