Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Synopsis of the Course of Lectures on Materia Medica and Pharmacy: Delivered in the University of Pennsylvania The following outlines of the Lectures on Materia Medica and Pharmacy have been prepared, that the Student attending the course may possess a guide to the leading facts and principles comprised in so extended a subject. No doubt can exist with respect to the advantages of such assistance. The strongest memory finds difficulty in appropriating all that is communicated by oral instruction, and many important points are lost to the generality of students. The text-books which treat of the same department pursue neither the order nor the method presented in the lectures, and loss of time is entailed by reading all that is relevant or irrelevant to the portion of the subject under consideration at any given period. The United States Dispensatory, and Pereira's Elements of Materia Medica, have been recommended in connection with the course; but so extensive is their range that they are scarcely adapted for the momentary requisitions of the student. Download or read book Lecture Introductory to the Course on Materia Medica and Pharmacy in the University of Pennsylvania written by Joseph Carson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-04 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lecture Introductory to the Course on Materia Medica and Pharmacy, in the University of Pennsylvania: Delivered October 10, 1850 By these discoveries, both the theory and practice of Pharmacy have been rendered more lucid and certain. As the laws of combination and affinity were established, the just selection of ingredients in compound medicines was regarded of essential importance, and the association of incompatibles, the source of endless embarrassment and perplexity, 'has been avoided. As new substances possess ing active properties were detected, their applicability to the purposes of medicine was ascertained, and their introduction into practice, either alone or combined, soon be came universal. By the isolation of the efficient principles of vegetable substances, and the removal of inert and useless matter, with which they are conjoined in nature, chemistry has revolutionized the entire constitution of the Materia Medica, and brought the organic as well as the Inorganic world completely into contribution to the wants of suffering humanity. By determining the composition of bodies, it has led to the assumption of a nomenclature and a classification expressive of the progress that has been made, but more than this, it is the touchstone by which fraud is discoverable, and the sure safeguard against imposition. This book was released on 2018-10-10 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introductory Lecture to the Course of Materia Medica in the University of Pennsylvania: Delivered November 2, 1842 You are aware that my department in this school is that of Materia Medica, or the Science which treats of Medicines. The time allotted, in the arrangements of'the schoolyto the course Of lectures on this subject is so completely filled up by-practical details, that little or none is left for considera tions Of a general nature, for which, therefore, I am com pelled to seek opportunity in my introductory addresses. Through these, accordingly, I have endeavoured to present to the'notice, and press upon the adoption of the student, var1ous facts, sentiments, and principles, having a more or les'sclose' relation to Materia Medica, and a more 'or less important bearin g upon its successful application to practice; but yet not exactly suited to the body of the course. I have thus, in different lectures, given sketches of the general history of the Materia Medica, and of its particular history in the United States, observations upon the relative import ance of the Science, and its claims on the attention of the student, an'aecount of the more frequent sources Of error and abuse in its practical application, and a dissertation upon the advantages Of a therapeutical recourse to moral influences as auxiliary to the physical. In continuance of the same plan, I propose at present to offer to the class some considerations upon the proper choice of medicines.
