Book excerpt: ENT diseases represent a very significant percentage of the cases day-to-day clinic general practitioner (GP). Unfortunately, the educational curriculum of the Medical Schools and Family Doctor/GP training program does not parallel the high prevalence of ENT diseases. As a result, GPs may refer to Secondary Care many patients with ENT problems when they could handle them in Primary Care. It is legitimate to assume that a better understanding of the clinical history, clinical examination and accurate management of ENT diseases, might lead if not to a reduction in the number of specialist visits requested by GPs, to a better management of the ENT patient. This book is not a complete compendium of Otolaryngology, which would not be useful to a GP. Instead, it wants to be a practical guide for the Primary Care provider. The topics covered are common and the ENT diseases management is the one you would expect to take place in a Primary Care setting. The use of ENT diagnostic instrumentation refers to what should be available in any GP Surgery. I think this book is a useful addition to the library of medical students, GPs in training and Board Certified Family Physicians. Its format is simple and the text is minimal. The topics are organized in such a way as to highlight when a patient should be sent to a specialist immediately, efficiently managed in General practice, and when a management program can be started by the GP.

Download or read book ENT Made Easy written by Linda MacConnell and published by Scion Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2019-05-30 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ENT Made Easy is the ideal clinical text for family physicians, physician assistants, ENT trainees, medical students, and other healthcare professionals looking to manage common ENT conditions. Diseases of the ears, nose and throat are among the most common presentations in primary care, and many patients are referred to ENT clinics in secondary care for further medical and surgical management. To help reduce these referrals this book guides readers through the basic anatomy and pathophysiology and then, for each presentation, provides: an introduction which describes possible causes and the history required a section on diagnosis, including which examinations and investigations to consider management options, complications to look out for, and when to refer. This book offers concise, practical guidance and so helps to fill the gap between ENT theory and the actual work experience. In addition to covering the common presentations, from allergic rhinitis to vertigo, via dysphagia and halitosis, the book also provides a description of the main investigations and covers the particular problems occurring in pediatric cases. Publisher's note: this version of ENT Made Easy is an adaptation of the book of the same name by Amtul Salam Sami (ISBN 9781911510055) and is specifically intended for the US market. Not available in the UK/Europe.

Book ENT REFERRALS FROM PRIMARY CARE WHAT CAN BE DONE DIFFERENTLY SERVICE EVALUATION

Download or read book ENT REFERRALS FROM PRIMARY CARE WHAT CAN BE DONE DIFFERENTLY SERVICE EVALUATION written by Dorota Chudek and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ENT REFERRALS FROM PRIMARY CARE - WHAT CAN BE DONE DIFFERENTLY?- SERVICE EVALUATIOND. Chudek, T. F. WeindlingAinsdale Medical Centre, Southport and Ormskirk Hospitals NHS TrustBACKGROUNDNumber of ENT referrals from Primary Care is gradually increasing putting even more pressure on already overbooked outpatient clinics. A big portion of these referrals is thought to be inappropriate or premature. Improving quality and reducing the number of unnecessary referrals, could dramatically help to reduce outpatient attendance rates, which would be invaluable in current financial NHS climate.OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to review ENT referrals in primary care, identify emerging patterns of common mistakes, as well as recommend what could be done differently or managed in primary care.METHODSRetrospective review of all ENT referrals in a large GP Practice over a period of 12 months. RESULTSThere was 158 referrals in the final study sample. The most common reasons for referrals included: reduced hearing, excessive wax, vertigo, rhino-sinusitis and persistent sore throat. In 20% of cases, ENT disagreed with the diagnosis made in Primary Care. In 39% of cases, additional diagnosis was made in ENT clinic. 9% of referral were classed as inappropriate. In particular we found that the majority of sore throat referrals could have been avoided if a trial of PPI/Gaviscon Advance was done in Primary Care. CONCLUSIONDuring this study, we identified areas for improvement in ENT referrals from Primary Care. We have have organised a teaching session for GPs and are currently working on developing a referral guidance leaflet which will be available on the Surgeryu2019s intranet and if proves useful could be distributed on large scale. Improving ENT education at Primary Care level and increasing awareness of common pitfalls could have a big impact on reducing the number of unnecessary outpatient referrals.
