Book A Grammar of the Pr krit Languages

Download or read book A Grammar of the Pr krit Languages written by Richard Pischel and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1981 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prakrit has a vast literature but it had no systematic comprehensive grammar. Scholars like Vararuci, Hemacandra, Trivikrama, Markandeya, Laksmidhara, Krsna Pandit, Ramasarana Tarkavagisa had indeed their own grammars but they differed immensely in respect of their contents. Lessen was the first who tried to systematize Prakrit grammar but he wrote in Latin. Then came Pischel who analysed not only the extant grammars but studied minutely the whole of extant Prakrit literature and collected first hand information about this important language.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ptolemy's Almagest is one of the most influential scientific works in history. A masterpiece of technical exposition, it was the basic textbook of astronomy for more than a thousand years, and still is the main source for our knowledge of ancient astronomy. This translation, based on the standard Greek text of Heiberg, makes the work accessible to English readers in an intelligible and reliable form. It contains numerous corrections derived from medieval Arabic translations and extensive footnotes that take account of the great progress in understanding the work made in this century, due to the discovery of Babylonian records and other researches. It is designed to stand by itself as an interpretation of the original, but it will also be useful as an aid to reading the Greek text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Absalom and Achitophel" is a profound political allegory crafted by John Dryden, a distinguished English poet and playwright during the 17th century. Published in 1681, the poem ingeniously employs biblical characters, particularly Absalom's rebellion against King David, to allegorically mirror the contemporary political tumult of the Monmouth Rebellion and the Exclusion Crisis in England. Dryden's satirical brilliance illuminates the narrative, offering a sharp critique of the political figures involved, with Absalom symbolizing James Scott (Duke of Monmouth) and Achitophel representing the Earl of Shaftesbury. The use of heroic couplets, a rhyming couplet form, adds to the poem's literary significance, creating a rhythmic and engaging narrative. "Absalom and Achitophel" stands not only as a poetic masterpiece but also as a historical commentary, providing a window into the intricate political and social dynamics of the late 17th century. Readers interested in the intersection of political allegory, satire, and historical events will find this work to be a captivating exploration within the rich tapestry of English literature. Copies of this influential poem can be explored in collections of classic literature, libraries, and online platforms dedicated to preserving literary heritage.

Book Cleft and Pseudo Cleft Constructions in English

Download or read book Cleft and Pseudo Cleft Constructions in English written by Peter C. Collins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1991, this book examines the communicative properties of ‘cleft’ and ‘pseudo-cleft’ constructions in contemporary English. The book argues that these properties cannot be ignored in any attempt to provide an adequate grammatical description of the constructions. Furthermore, they provide a source of explanations for the patterns of stylistic variation displayed by clefts and pseudo-clefts. The book reports findings from a corpus-based study of clefts and pseudo-clefts in modern British English.

Book The Mixed Language Debate

Download or read book The Mixed Language Debate written by Yaron Matras and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2008-08-22 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mixed Languages are speech varieties that arise in bilingual settings, often as markers of ethnic separateness. They combine structures inherited from different parent languages, often resulting in odd and unique splits that present a challenge to theories of contact-induced change as well as genetic classification. This collection of articles is devoted to the theoretical and empirical controversies that surround the study of Mixed Languages. Issues include definitions and prototypes, similarities and differences to other contact languages such as pidgins and creoles, the role of codeswitching in the emergence of Mixed Languages, the role of deliberate and conscious mixing, the question of the existence of a Mixed Language continuum, and the position of Mixed Languages in general models of language change and contact-induced change in particular. An introductory chapter surveys the current study of Mixed Languages. Contributors include leading historical linguists, contact linguists and typologists, among them Carol Myers-Scotton, Sarah Grey Thomason,William Croft, Thomas Stolz, Maarten Mous, Ad Backus, Evgeniy Golovko, Peter Bakker, Yaron Matras.

Book A Grammar and Dictionary of Indus Kohistani Dictionary

Download or read book A Grammar and Dictionary of Indus Kohistani Dictionary written by Claus Peter Zoller and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2005 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indus Kohistani is a major language of the Dardic group of Indo-Aryan languages. It is spoken in North Pakistan along the west bank of the Indus. The Dardic languages are - in the words of the eminent linguist R.L. Turner - linguistically of great interest. They are of crucial importance for our understanding of the early stages of Indo-Aryan (Sanskrit) and of its prehistory. The dictionary contains around 8.000 entries, many of which are supplemented with parallels from other languages (Indo-Aryan, Iranian, Dravidian, etc.), and with information about their origin. The book is presently the most comprehensive dictionary of a Dardic language and a rich source for linguists and South Asian philologists.

Book Phrasal Verbs

Download or read book Phrasal Verbs written by Stefan Thim and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-10-30 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book traces the evolution of the English verb-particle construction (‘phrasal verb’) from Indo-European and Germanic up to the present. A contrastive survey of the basic semantic and syntactic characteristics of verb-particle constructions in the present-day Germanic languages shows that the English construction is structurally unremarkable and its analysis as a periphrastic word-formation is proposed. From a cross-linguistic and comparative perspective the Old English prefix verbs are identified as preverbs and the shift towards postposition of the particles is connected to the development of more general patterns of word order. The interplay of phonological, morphological, syntactic and semantic factors in the loss of the native prefixes in the history of English is investigated. In this context the question is discussed to what extent the older prefixes were replaced by particles and borrowed prefixes, how the characteristic etymological and semantic properties of the Modern English phrasal verbs can be explained and what role they play in the lexicon. The author argues that their common perception as particularly ‘English’, ‘colloquial’ and ‘informal’ has its origin in the eighteenth-century normative tradition.

Book Connectives in the History of English

Download or read book Connectives in the History of English written by Ursula Lenker and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clausal connection is one of the key building blocks of language and thus a field where a wide range of syntactic, semantic, pragmatic and cognitive phenomena meet. The availability of large databases as well as considerable advances in corpus-linguistic methods have strengthened the interest in the history of features linking clauses or larger chunks of text. The papers in this volume combine a thorough corpus-based analysis of the history of individual connectives, their co-occurrence patterns, and patterns of variation and change from both intra- and inter-systemic perspectives with a variety of methodological tools, ranging from sophisticated methods of grammatical analysis to pragmatics, text linguistics and discourse analysis. Drawing on quantitatively and qualitatively improved data, the studies reconstruct the history of a wide range of connectives in English from various new theoretical perspectives.

Book Crosslinguistic Research in Syntax and Semantics

Download or read book Crosslinguistic Research in Syntax and Semantics written by Raffaella Zanuttini and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2006-05-19 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting cutting-edge research in syntax and semantics, this important volume furthers theoretical claims in generative linguistics and represents a significant addition to present scholarship in the field. Leading scholars present crosslinguistic studies dealing with clausal architecture, negation, and tense and aspect, and the issue of whether a statistical model can by itself capture the richness of human linguistic abilities. Taken together, these contributions elegantly show how theoretical tools can propel our understanding of language beyond pretheoretical descriptions, especially when combined with the insight and skills of linguists who can analyze difficult and complex data. Crosslinguistic Research in Syntax and Semantics covers a range of topics currently at the center of lively debate in the linguistic literature, such as the structure of the left periphery of the clause, the proper treatment of negative polarity items, and the role of statistical learning in building a model of linguistic competence. The ten original contributions offer an excellent balance of novel empirical description and theoretical analysis, applied to a wide range of languages, including Dutch, German, Irish English, Italian, Malagasy, Malay, and a number of medieval Romance languages. Scholars and students of semantics, syntax, and linguistic theory will find it to be a valuable resource for ongoing scholarship and advanced study.

Book Nominal Classification in Aboriginal Australia

Download or read book Nominal Classification in Aboriginal Australia written by Mark Harvey and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume aims to extend both the range of analyses and the database on nominal classification systems. Previous analyses of nominal classification systems have focussed on two areas: the semantics of the classification system and the role of the system in discourse. In many nominal classification systems, there appear to be a significant percentage of nominals with an arbitrary classification. There is a considerable body of literature aimed at elucidating the semantic bases of clasification in such systems, thereby reducing the degree of apparent arbitrariness. Contributors to this volume continue this line of enquiry, but also propose that arbitrariness in itself has a role from a wider socio-cultural perspective. Previous analyses of the discourse role of classification systems posit that they play a significant role in referential tracking. For the languages surveyed in this volume, contributors propose that reference instantiation is an equally significant function, and indeed that reference instantiation and tracking cannot be properly divided from one another. This volume provides detailed information on classification in a number of northern Australian languages, whose systems are otherwise poorly known.
