Book Synergies Created by a Strategic Fit between Business and Human Resource Strategies

Download or read book Synergies Created by a Strategic Fit between Business and Human Resource Strategies written by Wilson J. Osito Odiyo and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2013-07-26 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is an important addition to the ongoing discourse on strategic management, particularly, strategic human resource management. It is a result of research carried out in the agricultural sector, in general, and on multinational tea firms, in particular. The author’s hands-on and conceptual insights gained through nineteen years of experience across African countries make the text a useful tool for company boards of directors and strategic level managers charged with the formulation and implementation of business and human resource strategies. In addition, it provides justification to HR managers of the need to shift focus from primarily being concerned with routine transactional HR activities to dealing with transformational ones, which are contingent on the circumstances of the organization. Scholars, management consultants and management students will also find the contents of this book to be of great interest and benefit. It is now sufficiently recognised that management has to be concerned with deliverables, rather than abstractions. Therefore, many firms formulate and implement one form of business strategy or the other. However, strategies cannot be conceived, let alone realised, without human resource input. The question that HR continues to grapple with, therefore, is how it can demonstrate the contribution of each employee to the bottom line and business sustainability. How this question is to be answered has not always been explained and is even more crucial for the agricultural firms which are characterized by great instability in terms of weather patterns, commodity prices, currency exchange rates and wage levels. HR planning, in these circumstances, cannot be a simple exercise, but getting it right is more important than for organizations in more predictable environments. This book moves away from the romanticization of the role of HRM in such organizations, and instead provides empirical evidence of the types of business and human resource strategies employed, strategic integration between these strategies and the strategic human resource management processes and practices used. Finally, it considers the concomitant synergies achieved by strategic fit between business and human resource strategies and their role in achieving sustainable competitive advantage.

Book Strategic Business Partner

Download or read book Strategic Business Partner written by Dana Gaines Robinson and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. This book was released on 2005-03-01 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research clearly indicates that there is a strong need for the Human Resources (HR) function, and the people in it, to adopt a more strategic and business-linked approach. In one study business executives ranked the HR function as third, after sales and customer service, as a function that makes a very significant contribution to a company's bottom line. Unfortunately research also indicates that few HR functions have become strategic. Most still operate in a primarily administrative and tactical manner—the very work that is increasingly being outsourced. Clearly there is a gap between what business leaders and employees need from their HR departments and what HR is providing. HR functions must become more integrated into the business, with some people on the HR team assuming the role of Strategic Business Partner (SBP). Here, Dana and Jim Robinson offer guidance for HR, Organization Development and Learning professionals who aspire to transform themselves into effective Strategic Business Partners. They explain how SBPs build partnerships, based upon credibility and trust, with key organization leaders. These partnerships provide SBPs with opportunities to identify and support projects directly aligned with business goals. The success of these projects deepens the SBPs' credibility, enabling them to be viewed as strategic partners. At this higher level of accountability, SBPs work with business leaders to form long-range business strategies and plans, creating and implementing people initiatives that link into and support the business strategies and plans. This practical guide offers case studies, exercises, tips, and tools you can use to become a Strategic Business Partner in your organization.

Book Strategic Human Resource Management and Development

Download or read book Strategic Human Resource Management and Development written by Richard Regis and published by Excel Books India. This book was released on 2008 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Strategic Human Resource Management has been a topic familiar to many. But this book approaches the same topic in a current global economy with so many Indian business houses venturing into acquiring global giants and establishing themselves atop of the world of business in our growing economy. This means that with electronic communication making the world into a global village and virtual organizations and learning having made the distinction between 'place' and 'space' not a matter of importance, strategies to be adapted by the HR professionals should be totally new. That is where this book is having a new approach to SHRM. It is interspersed with contemporary Indian cases and experience to fall back on to illustrate the different strategies HR has to play as a business partner. Issues in employee privacy in case of virtual organizations have been vividly dealt with. Gone are the days of the fire-fighting role of HR professionals. They are required to play a vital role being part of the business strategy not only at the domestic arena but also in the global business. Challenges involved in building multicultural organizations, cross border merger and acquisition and repatriation and outsourcing are topics that are significant in the local as well as the global human resource management which are discussed extensively. The book explains career planning and development and compensation packages in the context of competencies and balanced scorecard. When speed and alacrity are demanded of all the employees to stay ahead of competition, the employees are required to put in extended hours and work in a stressful environment. Hence, the new-era HR professional has to resort to developmental activities through mentoring, coaching, counseling, stress management and emotional balance. The book is divided into five parts. Apart from the stories narrated within the text of the book, and some exercises, there is a separate section of cases at the end of the book to augment the concepts narrated in each part. It would not only fully meet the requirements of MBA students but would also give new direction to the practicing HR professionals.

Book Human Resource Strategy

Download or read book Human Resource Strategy written by Peter A. Bamberger and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2000-02-15 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is human resource strategy? How are human resources strategies formulated and how can we explain the variance between what is espoused and what is actually implemented? What impact – if any – does human resource strategy have on the organization′s "bottom line," and how can this impact be explained? Is there one best HR strategy for all firms, or is the impact of HR strategy on performance contingent on some set of organizational, technological, or environmental factors? Human Resource Strategy provides an overview of the academic and practitioner responses to these and other questions. Applying an integrative framework, the authors review twenty years worth of empirical and theoretical research in an attempt to reconcile often-conflicting conceptual models and competing empirical results. The authors present much of the relevant research in the context of the critical strategic decisions that executives must actually make with regard to human resource investments and deployments. As a result, often complex theoretical models and scientific findings are presented such that they are not only understandable but also highly relevant to non-research-oriented practitioners. Using real-world illustrations to clarify complex concepts and theories at the same time it provides a strong theoretical underpinning to basic models of HR strategy, Human Resource Strategy offers researchers a thorough review of literature in the field and the practitioner a useable guide to its application.

Book Strategic Human Resource Management

Download or read book Strategic Human Resource Management written by John Storey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-04 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM) has burgeoned over the past thirty years. Over this time there has been a shift towards a strategic conception which posited workers as ‘assets’ rather than ‘costs’. These ‘human resources’ were reconceptualised as a key source of competitive advantage. As such, these assets were to be treated seriously: selected with care, trained and developed, and above all, induced to offer commitment. The concept of ‘human capital’ came to the fore, and in the decades following these developments, research output has been voluminous. Strategic Human Resource Management: A Research Overview, authored by global research leaders, provides an expert summary of this crucial element of organizational performance. This new shortform book develops the argument that one of the crucial elements of organizational performance is the way work is organized in skill and talent packages both within an organization’s boundary and across global competency clusters. Secondly, it focuses on current and emergent challenges. The ‘package’ of HR approaches has changed over time and patterns can be observed. This new volume pays special regard to the HR implications arising from radically altering contexts – economic, social, and technological. This concise volume covers crucial themes of lasting interest, and as such is essential reading for business scholars and professionals.

Book Transformational Human Resources Management in Zimbabwe

Download or read book Transformational Human Resources Management in Zimbabwe written by Mervis Chiware and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-19 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a stepping stone toward solving public sector human capital challenges in Zimbabwe as it equips human capital managers with solutions to key issues in the public sector. In Zimbabwe, the public sector human capital drives the economy as over half of the population access their services through public enterprises. Government is the major agent in economic and infrastructure development as well as the production of goods and services. However, Zimbabwe’s public service is underperforming due to poorly motivated and managed employees who do not respond to the needs of its clients. This is a cause of concern as the public sector human capital is central to the overall performance of the public sector. Often public sector managers and leaders lack advanced, relevant, and dynamic skills and knowledge to deal with human resource challenges within the New Public Management environment. It is critical for the public sector to transform its human resource management to suit twenty-first-century needs. Effective human resource management in the public sector leads to economic growth and therefore the achievement of the Zimbabwe National Vision 2030. Therefore, this book serves as a guide for public sector managers and those directly or indirectly involved in human capital management. It provides in-depth knowledge and guidance in effective human capital management within the context of the public sector in Zimbabwe.

Book Synergy Value and Strategic Management

Download or read book Synergy Value and Strategic Management written by Stefano Garzella and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-29 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses synergy management, which poses an important challenge for firms, advisors and practitioners involved in mergers and acquisitions (M&A). Synergy plays a key role in M&A contexts, both in the decision-making process and, subsequently, in the integration phase. However, despite the fact that synergy value is commonly regarded as one of the key success factors in M&A, research shows that firms generally fail to achieve the expected synergy. The extant literature is characterized by a lack of comprehensive models of synergy management: the assessment of synergy value remains a “black box” for scholars and practitioners alike. The authors provide a comprehensive framework for synergy management by integrating findings from prior research and various disciplines. The framework highlights the main dimensions of synergy management in mergers and acquisitions, common pitfalls, and new models and tools for avoiding them. As such, the book enriches the M&A literature, offers new insights for scholars, and provides valuable guidelines for practitioners involved in synergy management.
