Book Synchrotron Radiation Selected Experiments in Condensed Matter Physics

Download or read book Synchrotron Radiation Selected Experiments in Condensed Matter Physics written by W. Czaja and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume contains most of the invited talks and two contributed posters of a workshop which was held in]uly 1990 within the frame of the Centro Stefano Franscini, Monte Verita at Ascona in Switzerland. The main idea has been to demonstrate that in many areas in solid state physics the use of synchrotron radiation as a powerful source for polarized uv radiation between 5 eV and about 1500 eV yields exciting new results. Furthermore, one has tried to attract a larger number of Ph D-students to bring them into contact with experienced people in the field. This tutorial aspect, I su ppose, is also in the spirit of Stefano Franscini, after whom the Centro, a joint undertaking between the Cantone Ticino and the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETHZ), has been named. Stefano Franscini, himself a dedicated teacher, has been the first member of his Canton in the Swiss Federal Council. As such he has been head of the departement of the interior and has been strongly supporting the foundation of the ETHZ. But he is also reknown, even today, as Cantonal Counceler, who has organised the elementary school system in Ticino.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1972, I had the privilege and responsibility of organizing a Gordon Conference on the "High-Energy Spectroscopy of Solids." The Thursday evening session focused on future directions for high-energy spectroscopy. The possibilities associated with synchrotron radiation for future research became a central issue. I was asked to choose the members of the panel and chair the session. Although all five members of the panel went on to have distinguished careers using synchrotron radiation, at the time some of them were skeptical about the future role of synchrotron radiation sources in high-energy photon spectroscopy. The discussion became heated, and many members of the audience spoke, both pro and con. One member of the panel produced a detailed argument that synchrotron radiation would never rival standard X-ray tubes. We found out that there were estimates for properties of synchrotrons that differed by orders of magnitude from those of X-ray tubes. That much uncertainty was expressed at a meeting that took place less than twenty years ago. It is hard to believe that, even though at that time synchrotron radiation was already being used for photoemission studies of solids and surfaces and intershell excitations in solids, the potential impact and importance of this area was not fully realized even by the experts. Today synchrotron radiation is one of the primary tools for studying surfaces, and synchrotron radiation has affected many other areas of condensed-matter physics---even superconductivity.

Book Applications of Synchrotron Light to Scattering and Diffraction in Materials and Life Sciences

This book was released on 2009-06-12 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a ?rst approximation, certainly rough, one can de?ne as non-crystalline materials those which are neither single-crystals nor poly-crystals. Within this category, we canincludedisorderedsolids, softcondensed matter, andlivesystemsamong others. Contrary to crystals, non-crystalline materials have in common that their intrinsic structures cannot be exclusively described by a discrete and periodical function but by a continuous function with short range of order. Structurally these systems have in common the relevance of length scales between those de?ned by the atomic and the macroscopic scale. In a simple ?uid, for example, mobile molecules may freely exchange their positions, so that their new positions are permutations of their old ones. By contrast, in a complex ?uid large groups of molecules may be interc- nected so that the permutation freedom within the group is lost, while the p- mutation between the groups is possible. In this case, the dominant characteristic length, which may de?ne the properties of the system, is not the molecular size but that of the groups. A central aspect of some non-crystalline materials is that they may self-organize. This is of particular importance for Soft-matter materials. Self-organization is characterized by the spontaneous creation of regular structures at different length scales which may exhibit a certain hierarchy that controls the properties of the system. X-ray scattering and diffraction have been for more than a hundred years an essential technique to characterize the structure of materials. Quite often scattering anddiffractionphenomenaexhibitedbynon-crystallinematerialshavebeenreferred to as non-crystalline diffraction.

Book Programming Environments for Massively Parallel Distributed Systems

Download or read book Programming Environments for Massively Parallel Distributed Systems written by Karsten M. Decker and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Massively Parallel Systems (MPSs) with their scalable computation and storage space promises are becoming increasingly important for high-performance computing. The growing acceptance of MPSs in academia is clearly apparent. However, in industrial companies, their usage remains low. The programming of MPSs is still the big obstacle, and solving this software problem is sometimes referred to as one of the most challenging tasks of the 1990's. The 1994 working conference on "Programming Environments for Massively Parallel Systems" was the latest event of the working group WG 10.3 of the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) in this field. It succeeded the 1992 conference in Edinburgh on "Programming Environments for Parallel Computing". The research and development work discussed at the conference addresses the entire spectrum of software problems including virtual machines which are less cumbersome to program; more convenient programming models; advanced programming languages, and especially more sophisticated programming tools; but also algorithms and applications.

Book Nuclear Condensed Matter Physics with Synchrotron Radiation

Download or read book Nuclear Condensed Matter Physics with Synchrotron Radiation written by Ralf Röhlsberger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-11-19 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the growing field of nuclear solid state physics with synchrotron radiation, a technique that is finding a number of unique applications in fields such as magnetism, surface science, and lattice dynamics. Due to the remarkable brilliance of modern synchrotron radiation sources, the method is particularly suited for the study of thin films, nanoparticles and clusters. Its high isotopic specificity can be employed to measure magnetic or vibrational properties with very high spatial resolution. The book is written on an introductory level and is thus suited for newcomers to the field. Many examples are presented to illustrate the unique experimental possibilities.

Book New Directions in Research with Third Generation Soft X Ray Synchrotron Radiation Sources

Download or read book New Directions in Research with Third Generation Soft X Ray Synchrotron Radiation Sources written by A.S. Schlachter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soft X-rays are a powerful probe of matter. They interact selectively with electrons in atoms and molecules and can be used to study atomic physics, chemical reactions, surfaces and solids, and biological entities. Over the past 20 years, synchrotrons have emerged as powerful sources of soft X-rays for experimental use. A new, third generation of synchrotron light sources is scheduled to start operation over the next few years, beginning in 1993. These facilities are distinguished by their ultra-low emittance electron beams and by their undulators -- precisely engineered magnetic devices that cause the electrons passing through them to produce highly coherent X-rays and ultraviolet light of unprecedented spectral brightness. This volume emphasizes third-generation sources that produce light in the 10 eV--10 KeV energy range. It describes potential applications ranging from the purely scientific to the commercially viable and includes chapters on the practical aspects of designing undulators and beam line optics. Unique in its coverage, the book is a vital addition to the library of any scientist who needs information on the world's most advanced imaging and spectroscopic techniques. (ABSTRACT) This volume emphasizes the applications of new third generation synchrotron radiation sources that produce light in the ultraviolet and soft X-ray range of the spectrum. The unprecedented brightness of this light enables experiments to be conducted with greatly increased spatial and spectral resolution. Scientists can exploit these properties for imaging and spectroscopic applications that until now were impossible or impractical. Prominent researchers in the field describe these applications and others made possible by the light's pulsed time structure and polarization. The volume also includes chapters on the practical aspects of designing undulators and beam line optics.
