Book Voltage Stability Assessment and Control Based on Synchrophasor Measurements in Ambient Condition

Download or read book Voltage Stability Assessment and Control Based on Synchrophasor Measurements in Ambient Condition written by Sayed Mohammad Amelian and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Voltage stability assessment and control are among the top priority tasks for electric utilities and power system operators. Failure in performing these correctly, has resulted in some of the major blackouts over the past few decades. Continuous loading increase on system infrastructure, higher reliability and security requirements, as well as progressive renewable resource integration, incapable of guaranteeing sustained reactive support, have all made this function more complex, and yet more crucial.Traditionally, developed algorithms for calculating voltage stability margin and recommending the necessary control action, rely on complete and accurate system models, as well as extensive offline studies. Investigating previous incidents has proved this to be a challenging goal to achieve. At the same time, integration of high-sampling measurement devices such as synchrophasors, powerful processors, and fast communication have resulted in increased situational awareness and monitoring quality of the system behavior. As a result, there is high interest today, to develop measurement-based real-time tools for determining system status from stability point of view and deduce the optimal control actions in critical conditions. In this dissertation, accurate modeling of the power system ambient data, corresponding to its operation at quasi steady-state condition is discussed, and the difference between system's steady-state response and power flow solutions is investigated. Based on this clarification, a new distributed model-free algorithm is proposed for voltage stability assessment and control of a power system, based on steady-state Q-V sensitivity of system buses. This is realized through subspace system identification from input-output response based on ambient measurements. Once the sensitivities are known, system proximity to voltage instability can be determined using the minimum sensitivity, rank system buses according to their stability margin and the need for corrective control actions, and determine the optimal set of actions needed to bring system operation point back to a secure state. To pursue the latter, two optimization approaches with different objectives based on various operating policies are introduced towards finding the best local control action within a substation. Finally, an index is introduced to determine vulnerability of the system to voltage instability caused by limitation on a generator's reactive power.

Book TIME DOMAIN VOLTAGE STABILITY ASSESSMENT AND WIDE AREA CONTROL

Download or read book TIME DOMAIN VOLTAGE STABILITY ASSESSMENT AND WIDE AREA CONTROL written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract : This dissertation proposes and develops an EMTP-based time-domain approach for voltage stability assessment. Steady-state approaches for voltage stability analysis use linearized equations based on power frequency phasor analysis using the Jacobian matrix of the power system. Using these conventional methods, nonlinearities and resultant harmonics are not addressed, nor are frequency-dependencies or natural responses to step-changes in the system. In order to implement this method all power system components need to be modeled in time-domain. Different load models and Var compensators have been developed in EMTP/ATP to conduct time-domain simulations. A Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) model is also presented to provide a bridge between time and phasor domain analysis. Different case studies are shown in which time-domain analysis present the accurate results while steady state analysis include measurement and estimation errors. Furthermore, a new Voltage Stability Index (VSI) is developed to detect impending voltage instability. A proposed multi-criteria index is developed based on different sub-indices calculated by monitoring different parameters of power system. the multi-level feature of the proposed index enables us to closely monitor voltage stability status and implement appropriate remedial actions when needed and avoid unnecessary actions. Finally, the application of the proposed method and VSI in wide-area control and protection against voltage collapse is investigated. Novel wide-area control algorithms are developed based on voltage sensitivity analysis and the results for shunt capacitor and Static Var Compensator (SVC) control are compared to local-control strategies. It is shown that the voltage support provided by wide-area control strategy is more effective and will lead to a better voltage profile. The methods developed here can be directly implemented in smart grid infrastructure using a combination of synchrophasors and sampled values capabilities.

Book Towards On line Voltage Stability Assessment Using Synchrophasors

Download or read book Towards On line Voltage Stability Assessment Using Synchrophasors written by Himanshu Subandhu Hirlekar and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Voltage instability has become a growing concern in the operation of power systems in recent years. The reason is that power systems all over are being operated with reduced margins because of increased demand exacerbated by a general reluctance to invest in improvement of the electric grid infrastructure. Until recently it was difficult to predict voltage instability in the on-line environment. However, advances in technology has made possible the on-line monitoring and assessment of voltage stability. Synchrophasors is a relatively new technology in the field of power systems which allows system operators to monitor the system conditions at specific measurement locations of the network. Synchrophasors measure voltage and current phasors with accurate time stamping with respect to Global Positioning System (GPS) clock reference. Because of the accurate time stamping, it becomes possible to compare the phasors in time. A novel voltage stability prediction algorithm using synchrophasors is proposed in this thesis. Synchrophasor data is used to perform a fast state estimation of the system. This is a departure from conventional SCADA-based state estimation. The traditional method of VQ analysis for voltage stability is put to use in this algorithm to estimate the voltage stability margin. Since we are incorporating the synchrophasor information for which the data refresh rate is fast, the algorithm being developed is proposed for on-line stability assessment. The algorithm is tested on the CIGRE 10-bus system. The results are validated using the well-known modal analysis method"--Abstract, leaf iii.

Book Synchrophasor based State Estimation for Online Voltage Stability Monitoring in Power Systems

Download or read book Synchrophasor based State Estimation for Online Voltage Stability Monitoring in Power Systems written by Xinyun Lu and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Power distribution systems are faced with rising operational challenges and require continuous stability monitoring as the integration of renewable energy resources is increasing and the load demand is rapidly growing. In order to provide timely information about any impending grid problems to system operators, this thesis focuses on the analysis and monitoring of voltage stability on distribution system side. The implementation of synchrophasors in distribution systems enhances the situational awareness of the system. Synchrophasor measurement offers increased visibility, faster response time and more reliable state estimation, which provides a unique opportunity for developing new monitoring algorithms. This thesis proposes a voltage stability monitoring algorithm based on the synchrophasor-based linear state estimation method. Particularly, the voltage monitoring algorithm combines a set of early warning indicators with the BDS independence test (a statistical hypothesis test, after the initials of W. A. Brock, W. Dechert and J. Scheinkman). The early warning indicators are derived based on critical slowing down phenomenon in dynamical systems, and the BDS test serves as a diagnostic test to avoid false detections. The main advantage of the algorithm over other voltage stability indicators used in transmission side is that it can detect the onset of voltage instability in a faster and more accurate manner while avoiding false alarms when the system is still away from the stability boundary. Case studies conducted on a rural Quebec test feeder confirm the effectiveness of the proposed voltage stability monitoring algorithm. Reliable and fast detection of the proximity of the system states to voltage collapse conditions is achieved without false alarms." --
