Download or read book Synaptic Plasticity in Pain written by Marzia Malcangio and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-05-28 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Primary sensory neurons respond to peripheral stimulation and project to the spinal cord. Specifically, the population of neurons which respond to damaging stimuli terminate in the superficial layers of the dorsal horn. Therefore, the dorsal horns constitute the first relay site for nociceptive fibre terminals which make synaptic contacts with second order neurons. It has recently become clear that the strength of this first pain synapse is plastic and modifiable by several modulators, including neuronal and non-neuronal regulators, and studies on the fundamental processes regulating the plasticity of the first pain synapse have resulted in the identification of new targets for the treatment of chronic pain. This book will be of interest to a wide readership in the pain field.

Book Neural Plasticity in Chronic Pain

Download or read book Neural Plasticity in Chronic Pain written by Helena Knotkova and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until recently, it was thought that the adult brain is modifiable only during early stages of ontogenesis. However, neurophysiological and neuroimaging studies now indicate that the mature human brain is under certain conditions capable of substantial neuroplastic changes. The concept of plasticity is complex and can be applied to all levels of neural organisation from molecular to systemic level of neural networks. Neuroplasticity reflects the ability of human brain to alter the pattern of neural activation in response to previous experience, and recent findings indicate that the effects of experience can lead to both structural as well as functional reorganisation. This book presents current research in the study of neural plasticity in chronic pain.

Book Chronic Pain New Molecular Insights Into Pain And Treatment

Download or read book Chronic Pain New Molecular Insights Into Pain And Treatment written by Min Zhuo and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2023-09-22 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book successfully explores cellular and molecular mechanisms of chronic pain based on recent basic neurobiological investigations. By focusing on major breakthroughs in basic neurosciences, it is believed to contain the promise for future new pain drug discovery.Instead of repeating extensive reviews of basic animal and clinical observations, the book provides a novel neuronal model that is believed to be the key target for treating chronic pain. In addition, it reviews and validates animal models developed for studying basic mechanisms of pain and chronic pain, and the current medicine used to treat chronic pain as well as alternative pain treatment. The final few chapters also cover how pain may interfere with other high brain functions, such as fear, anxiety, sleep, memory, etc.

Book The Neurobiology of Pain

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephen P. Hunt
  • Publisher : Molecular and Cellular Neurobi
  • Release : 2005
  • ISBN : 9780198515616
  • Pages : 422 pages

Download or read book The Neurobiology of Pain written by Stephen P. Hunt and published by Molecular and Cellular Neurobi. This book was released on 2005 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last decade has seen major advances in the neurobiology of pain, primarily resulting from a deeper understanding of the way in which pain signals are coded and processed in the nervous system. This volume in the Molecular and Cellular Neurobiology is the first book for many years to present an integrated overview of the current state of research into the neurobiology of chronic and acute pain. While recent molecular aspects of nociception are covered in some detail, the book also emphasises the importance of viewing the pain experience as the co-ordinated response of many different areas of the nervous system. The molecular advances are set in the context of the neurobiological system of pain processing. The appropriate behavioural response to injury can therefore be thought of as the result of the integration of information processed within areas of the brain concerned with cognition, affect, sensory discrimination and movement. Chapters cover recent advances in nociceptor transduction mechanisms, nociceptor plasticity and the biochemical anatomy of pain pathways. Other contributions are concerned with the development of pain systems and with the central processing of nociceptive information studied with brain imaging techniques. Several chapters additionally cover the mechanisms of clinically important pain states such as neuropathic pain, cancer related pain and migraine. A new volume in the Molecular and Cellular Neurobiology series, this volume presents a state-of-the-art account of the neurobiological basis of pain, edited and written by the leading scientists in this field.
