As Aia encounters civilization, it quickly learns that self-actualization is not for all: machines live within a caste system, bound to their peers with no means of promotion. Within the eclectic city-state of HUB 9, situated in the idyllic ruins of San Francisco, Aia is indentured to a sewage processing facility and nearly gives up hope until it is mysteriously promoted from its current assignment by Donnie Eberstark, a member of the social elite bent on preserving humanity's legacy and culture. While discovering where it fits in, Aia becomes embroiled in a high stakes political movement that will decide the future of machine-kind. Immersive, meditative, and witty, Stuart Warren's second full-length novel Dynamic Synapse Protocol explores the aftermath of humanity's fall and the difficult choice between exalting the past or embracing the future.

  • Release : 2010-10-22
  • ISBN : 1441970614
  • Pages : 315 pages

Download or read book Folding for the Synapse written by Andreas Wyttenbach and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-10-22 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Folding for the Synapse addresses the current view on how protein folding and misfolding, controlled by molecular chaperones, contribute to synapse function and dysfunction. Molecular chaperones have been studied in relation to de novo protein folding, but there is increasing awareness that chaperone function is required for the regulation of protein dynamics when functioning physiologically as an isolated moiety or part of a protein complex. This book will introduce both important concepts of folding machineries and give examples of the biological relevance of further chaperone functions.

Book The Sticky Synapse

    Book Details:
  • Author : Michael Hortsch
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2009-06-07
  • ISBN : 0387927085
  • Pages : 451 pages

Download or read book The Sticky Synapse written by Michael Hortsch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-06-07 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The molecular mechanisms, which are responsible for the functional differences between the various types of neuronal synapses, have become one of the central themes of modern neurobiology. It is becoming increasingly clear that a misregulation of synaptogenesis and synaptic remodeling and dysfunctional neuronal synapses are at the heart of several human diseases, both neurological disorders and psychiatric conditions. As synapses present specialized cellular junctions between neurons and their target cells, it may not come as a surprise that neural cell adhesion molecules (CAMs) are of special importance for the genesis and the maintenance of synaptic connections. Genes encoding adhesive molecules make up a significant portion of the human genome, and neural CAMs even have been postulated to be a major factor in the evolution of the human brain. These are just some of the many reasons why we thought a book on neural CAMs and their role in establishing and maintaining neuronal synapses would be highly appropriate for summarizing our current state of knowledge. Without question, over the near future, additional adhesive proteins will join the ranks of synaptic CAMs and our knowledge, and how these molecules enable neurons and their targets to communicate effectively will grow.

Book Imaging Synapse Structure and Function

Download or read book Imaging Synapse Structure and Function written by George J. Augustine and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2017-07-06 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development of new imaging technologies in recent years has transformed neuroscience in profound ways. Following on the heels of the revolution based on the Green Fluorescent Protein, refined genetically-encoded fluorescent reporters and genetic targeting strategies now enable optical recording of synaptic transmission in defined neuronal populations at speeds approaching the enviable temporal resolution of electrophysiology. Super-resolution light microscopy permits observation of synapses and their molecular machinery at sub-diffraction resolution. At the ultrastructural level, automated forms of electron microscopy, improvements in specimen fixation methods, and recent efforts to correlate data from light and electron micrographs now make the reconstruction of functional neural circuits a reality. Finally, the use of optogenetic actuators, such as channelrhodopsins, allows precise temporal and spatial manipulation of neuronal activity and is revealing profound insights into the organization of neural circuits and their roles in behavior. This research topic highlights recent advances in both light and electron microscopy, with a specific focus on approaches that combine innovations from several different fields to obtain novel information about synapse structure and function. We are confident that this collection of articles - three original research papers, six reviews, one methods paper and one perspective article - will enable neuroscientists to achieve the next generation of experiments aimed at cracking the neural code.
