Book The Vengeance of Our Lord

Download or read book The Vengeance of Our Lord written by Stephen K. Wright and published by PIMS. This book was released on 1989 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analyzes the medieval dramatic tradition of history plays (Vengeance of Our Lord) on the siege and destruction of Jerusalem, 70 CE, which enjoyed widespread popularity in the 14th-16th centuries in Germany, France, England, Spain, and Italy. Describes the development of the tradition, and shows how medieval dramatists made use of antisemitic stereotypes and transformed the distant non-Christian past to address contemporary Christian audiences. Traces the sources of this dramatic tradition to Hesegippus's translation of Josephus Flavius in which the fall of Jerusalem is interpreted by Hesegippus as God's punishment of the Jews for deicide, to Church sermons on the Gospels, and to the Vindicta Salvatoris genre describing Titus as a recent convert leading a Christian crusade against deicide Jews who reject the true faith. Includes microfiche reproductions of "Ludus de assumptione beatae Mariae virginis, " "Gothaer Botenrolle, " and Eustache Marcade's "La vengance Jhesucrist."

Book The Red Jews Antisemitism in an Apocalyptic Age 1200 1600

Download or read book The Red Jews Antisemitism in an Apocalyptic Age 1200 1600 written by Andrew Colin Gow and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the history of an imaginary people — the Red Jews — in vernacular sources from medieval and early modern Germany. From the twelfth to the seventeenth century, German-language texts repeated and embroidered on an antisemitic tale concerning an epochal threat to Christianity, the Red Jews. This term, which expresses a medieval conflation of three separate traditions (the biblical destroyers Gog and Magog, the 'unclean peoples' enclosed by Alexander, and the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel), is a hostile designation of wickedness. The Red Jews played a major role in late medieval popular exegesis and literature, and appeared in a hitherto-unnoticed series of sixteenth-century pamphlets, in which they functioned as the medieval 'spectacles' through which contemporaries viewed such events as Turkish advances in the Near and Middle East. The Red Jews disappear from the sources after 1600, and consequently never found their way into historical scholarship.

Book Social Imagery in Middle Low German

Download or read book Social Imagery in Middle Low German written by Cordelia Hess and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-06-20 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social imagery during the Late Middle Ages was typically considered to be dominated by the three orders oratores, bellatores, laboratores as the most common way of describing social order, along with body metaphors and comprehensive lists of professions as known from the Danse macabre tradition. None of these actually dominates within the vast genre of lay didactical literature. This book comprises the first systematic investigation of social imagery from a specific late medieval linguistic context. It methodically catalogues images of the social that were used in a particular cultural/literary sphere, and it separates late medieval efforts at catechization in print from the social and religious ruptures that are conventionally thought to have occurred after 1517. The investigation thus compliments recent scholarship on late medieval vernacular literature in Germany, most of which has concentrated on southern urban centres of production. The author fills a major lacuna in this field by concentrating for the first time on the entire extant corpus of vernacular print production in the northern region dominated by the Hanseatic cities and the Middle Low German dialect.

Book Holding On to Reality

Download or read book Holding On to Reality written by Albert Borgmann and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Holding On to Reality is a brilliant history of information, from its inception in the natural world to its role in the transformation of culture to the current Internet mania and is attendant assets and liabilities. Drawing on the history of ideas, the details of information technology, and the boundaries of the human condition, Borgmann illuminates the relationship between things and signs, between reality and information. "[Borgmann] has offered a stunningly clear definition of information in Holding On to Reality. . . . He leaves room for little argument, unless one wants to pose the now vogue objection: I guess it depends on what you mean by nothing."—Paul Bennett, Wired "A superb anecdotal analysis of information for a hype-addled age."—New Scientist "This insightful and poetic reflection on the changing nature of information is a wonderful antidote to much of the current hype about the 'information revolution.' Borgmann reminds us that whatever the reality of our time, we need 'a balance of signs and things' in our lives."—Margaret Wertheim, LA Weekly
