Hirschi analyzes a large body of data on delinquency collected in Western Contra Costa County, California, contrasting throughout the assumptions of the strain, control, and cultural deviance theories. He outlines the assumptions of these theories and discusses the logical and empirical difficulties attributed to each of them. Then draws from sources an outline of social control theory, the theory that informs the subsequent analysis and which is advocated here.Often listed as a Citation Classic, Causes of Delinquency retains its force and cogency with age. Book excerpt: The authors of this study conclude that juvenile delinquents are frequently found in those families in which the fulfillment of social relationships has been hindered at one time or the other. By taking the family instead of the delinquent as the unit of research, the authors have been able to compare 105 delinquents with 105 children belonging to the same families and thus serving as controls. The authors believed that delinquent behaviour is symptomatic of "the prevalence of profoundly felt emotional disturbances," and they feel that their diagnostic classification of delinquents has prognostic value.
