A broad range of community efforts have emerged to reconnect people in urban areas to fresh foods with expected benefits for public health. These efforts can be found in cities across the country and cross both economic and ethnic lines. They have been led by the non- scientific community and are best characterized as social movements. Expansion of agriculture to non- traditional areas including community or kitchen gardens in urban or peri- urban environments has the potential to provide a range of ecosystem services as well as reduce stressors on non- urban environments. These services/benefits include improved public health, improved human nutrition and diet, large-scale production of renewable resources, increased food security with less resilience on traditional agricultural landscapes and seascapes, enhanced ecosystem function in urban areas, and increased public appreciation for and understanding of ecosystem services.

Book excerpt: Urbanization drastically alters the ecosystems structure and functions, disrupts cycling of C and other elements along with water. It alters the energy balance and influences climate at local, regional and global scales. In 2008, urban population exceeded the rural population. In 2050, 70% of the world population will live in urban centers. The number of megacities (10 million inhabitants) increased from three in 1975 to 19 in 2007, and is projected to be 27 in 2025. Rapid urbanization is altering the ecosystem C budget. Yet, urban ecosystems have a large C sink capacity in soils and biota. Judicious planning and effective management can enhance C pool in urban ecosystems, and off-set some of the anthropogenic emissions. Principal components with regards to C sequestration include home lawns and turfs, urban forests, green roofs, park and recreational/sports facilities and urban agriculture.

Book excerpt: The Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) of the State of California Environmental Protection Agency is in the process of complying with the Regulatory Structure Update. The Regulatory Structure Update is a comprehensive review and refocusing of California's system for identifying and regulating management of hazardous wastes. As part of this effort, the DTSC proposes to change its current waste classification system that categorizes wastes as hazardous or nonhazardous based on their toxicity. Under the proposed system there would be two risk-based thresholds rather than the single toxicity threshold currently used to distinguish between the wastes. Wastes that contain specific chemicals at concentrations that exceed the upper threshold will be designated as hazardous; those below the lower threshold will be nonhazardous; and those with chemical concentrations between the two thresholds will be "special" wastes and subject to variances for management and disposal. The proposed DTSC system combines toxicity information with short or long-term exposure information to determine the risks associated with the chemicals. Under section 57004 of the California Health and Safety Code, the scientific basis of the proposed waste classification system is subject to external scientific peer review by the National Academy of Sciences, the University of California, or other similar institution of higher learning or group of scientists. This report addresses that regulatory requirement.

Book excerpt: The many benefits of gardens are well-documented, with such spaces especially important in urban settings where gardening can play a critical role in food access and community-building. However, benefits of urban gardening must be balanced with potential risks of exposure to contaminants that can be present in urban soils, including heavy metals. This research assessed concentrations of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), and lead (Pb) in gardens in Laramie, Wyoming, and evaluated gardeners’ knowledge and practices related to soil contamination. It also explored the effects of biochar, compost, and Miracle-Gro All Purpose Plant FoodTM on soil properties, availability of Pb in soil, and uptake by radish (Raphanus sativus, L.) using Pb-contaminated soil. Overall knowledge of soil contamination was low among gardeners. Sampled soils were below EPA Regional Screening Level maximums, however elevated Pb concentrations in residential gardens underscored the need for increased awareness. The greenhouse experiment showed biochar-amended soil reduced soil Pb availability and uptake by radish through effective sorption, but should be used in combination with other organic amendments to avoid soil nitrogen (N) deficiencies. A reduction in soil available Pb was also observed in compost-amended soil, likely attributable to plant uptake, as radishes grown with compost had significantly more Pb per plant than unamended and biochar-amended soils. Miracle-Gro increased both soil Pb availability and plant uptake. This study recommends that gardeners follow a set of formulated recommendations to minimize Pb exposure and reduce Pb uptake in plants used for human consumption.
