Book Introduction to Superstrings and M Theory

Download or read book Introduction to Superstrings and M Theory written by Michio Kaku and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Called by some "the theory of everything," superstrings may solve a problem which has eluded physicists for the past 50 years -- the final unification of the two great theories of the twentieth century, general relativity and quantum field theory. This is a course-tested comprehensive introductory graduate text on superstrings which stresses the most current areas of interest, not covered in other presentation, including: string field theory, multi loops, Teichmueller spaces, conformal field theory, and four-dimensional strings. The book begins with a simple discussion of point particle theory, and uses the Feynman path integral technique to unify the presentation of superstrings. Prerequisites are an aquaintance with quantum mechanics and relativity. This second edition has been revised and updated throughout.

Book Quantum Topology And Global Anomalies

Download or read book Quantum Topology And Global Anomalies written by Randy A Baadhio and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996-09-03 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anomalies are ubiquitous features in quantum field theories. They can ruin the consistency of such theories and put significant restrictions on their viability, especially in dimensions higher than four. Global gauge and gravitational anomalies are to date, one of the scant powerful and probing tools available to physicists in the pursuit of uniqueness. This monograph is one of the very few that specializes in the study of global anomalies in quantum field theories. A discussion of various issues associated to three dimensional physics — the Chern-Simons-Witten theories — widen the scope of this book. Topics discussed here comprises: the ongoing quest for three-manifolds invariant, the role of the mapping class groups in (a) the detection and cancellation of global anomalies, (b) formulating three-manifolds invariant; the geometric quantization of Chern-Simons-Witten theories; deformation quantization; study of chiral and gravitational anomalies; anomalies and the Atiyah-Patodi-Singer Index theorem; exotic spheres; global gravitational anomalies in some six and ten dimensional supergravity and superstring theories, with an additional case study of Witten SU(2) Global Gauge Anomalies. In addition, five chapters lay out the mathematical basis for a thorough use of the topics above. One chapter focuses on the relationship between Teichmüller spaces, moduli spaces and mapping class groups. Another chapter is devoted to mapping class groups and arithmetic groups. Gauge theories on Riemann surfaces are studies in well over two chapters, the first one centered on the theory of bundles and the second on connections. Many readers will find this a useful book, especially theoretical physicists and mathematicians. The material presented here will be of interest to both the experts who will find complete, detailed and precise descriptions of important topics of current interest in mathematical physics, and to students and newcomers to the field, who will appreciate the vast amount of information provided here, especially on global anomalies.

Book Fields And Geometry 1986 Proceedings Of The 22nd Winter School And Workshop Of Theoretical Physics

Download or read book Fields And Geometry 1986 Proceedings Of The 22nd Winter School And Workshop Of Theoretical Physics written by Arkadiusz Jadczyk and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The continuation of global poverty is inextricably entwined with the fundamental philosophy of the market economy. It is driven by the individual's neverending desire for “profit”, leading to a critically imbalanced distribution of resources. As an entrepreneurial initiative, this book advocates a shift in the responsibility for relief of poverty away from the government to the private sector, and in particular to corporate entities. The concept of the “residual” is used as the cornerstone of business operations and wealth distribution. Corporate decision-makers, while making proprietary decisions for resources allocation, must assume stewardship responsibility and be accountable not just to financial investors but to all contributors of the corporate entity.

Book The Hypoelliptic Laplacian and Ray Singer Metrics AM 167

Download or read book The Hypoelliptic Laplacian and Ray Singer Metrics AM 167 written by Jean-Michel Bismut and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2008-09-07 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the analytic foundations to the theory of the hypoelliptic Laplacian. The hypoelliptic Laplacian, a second-order operator acting on the cotangent bundle of a compact manifold, is supposed to interpolate between the classical Laplacian and the geodesic flow. Jean-Michel Bismut and Gilles Lebeau establish the basic functional analytic properties of this operator, which is also studied from the perspective of local index theory and analytic torsion. The book shows that the hypoelliptic Laplacian provides a geometric version of the Fokker-Planck equations. The authors give the proper functional analytic setting in order to study this operator and develop a pseudodifferential calculus, which provides estimates on the hypoelliptic Laplacian's resolvent. When the deformation parameter tends to zero, the hypoelliptic Laplacian converges to the standard Hodge Laplacian of the base by a collapsing argument in which the fibers of the cotangent bundle collapse to a point. For the local index theory, small time asymptotics for the supertrace of the associated heat kernel are obtained. The Ray-Singer analytic torsion of the hypoelliptic Laplacian as well as the associated Ray-Singer metrics on the determinant of the cohomology are studied in an equivariant setting, resulting in a key comparison formula between the elliptic and hypoelliptic analytic torsions.

Book Supersymmetry and Its Applications

Download or read book Supersymmetry and Its Applications written by G. W. Gibbons and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1986-06-12 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains papers presented at the Nuffield Workshop on supersymmetry and its applications held at Cambridge in the summer of 1985 and attended by many of the leading experts in the field. In physical terms, supersymmetry is a symmetry or gauge invariance which connects bosons (particles with integer spin) with fermions (particles with half integer spin). The study of supersymmetry has led to the construction of Yang-Mills theories, which are the first field theories to be free of the divergences that usually occur in quantum theories, with an infinite number of degrees of freedom. It has also led to the construction of supergravity and superstring theories which seem to be the best hope for a complete unified theory of all physical interactions including gravity. Supersymmetry and its Applications reviews a number of recent advances in the area of anomalies, the topology of gauge theories, superstrings, supergravity and super Yang-Mills theory. The papers, written by both physicists and mathematicians, include both expository articles and progress reports describing most recent developments.
