Download or read book Sympathy Or the Mourner Advised and Consoled Classic Reprint written by John Bruce and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-14 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sympathy, or the Mourner Advised and Consoled This amiable feeling, - which is the going forth of the affections of the heart towards the unhappy, Christianity cherishes. Considering us as parts Of the universal family, and linked in the bond Of common brotherhood, it commands, as we have Opportunity, that we do good to all men. Their sufferings may have been the effect of their own imprudence, or even of their vices; and yet, they are not, on these accounts, to be excluded from the benefits Of a wise and discriminating commiseration. We are to imitate our Father in heaven, who maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. Love will not suffer the man who is the subject Of it to enjoy contentedly the good things which he pos sesses, so long as any of his neighbours are in circumstances Of distress. He chooses rather to diminish his own comforts to relieve the necessities Of others: or if the trial is beyond his power to relieve, he shares it by sympathy. If I had nothing else to bestow upon the miserable, said one Of the Fathers, it would delight me to shed a tear or two on their sufferings. Download or read book The Story of Pain written by Joanna Bourke and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-06-26 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone knows what is feels like to be in pain. Scraped knees, toothaches, migraines, giving birth, cancer, heart attacks, and heartaches: pain permeates our entire lives. We also witness other people - loved ones - suffering, and we 'feel with' them. It is easy to assume this is the end of the story: 'pain-is-pain-is-pain', and that is all there is to say. But it is not. In fact, the way in which people respond to what they describe as 'painful' has changed considerably over time. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, for example, people believed that pain served a specific (and positive) function - it was a message from God or Nature; it would perfect the spirit. 'Suffer in this life and you wouldn't suffer in the next one'. Submission to pain was required. Nothing could be more removed from twentieth and twenty-first century understandings, where pain is regarded as an unremitting evil to be 'fought'. Focusing on the English-speaking world, this book tells the story of pain since the eighteenth century, addressing fundamental questions about the experience and nature of suffering over the last three centuries. How have those in pain interpreted their suffering - and how have these interpretations changed over time? How have people learnt to conduct themselves when suffering? How do friends and family react? And what about medical professionals: should they immerse themselves in the suffering person or is the best response a kind of professional detachment? As Joanna Bourke shows in this fascinating investigation, people have come up with many different answers to these questions over time. And a history of pain can tell us a great deal about how we might respond to our own suffering in the present - and, just as importantly, to the suffering of those around us.

Book Fear in the Medical and Literary Imagination Medieval to Modern

Download or read book Fear in the Medical and Literary Imagination Medieval to Modern written by Daniel McCann and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-05-19 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about an emotion constantly present in human culture and history: fear. It is also a book about literature and medicine, two areas of human endeavour that engage with fear most acutely. The essays in this volume explore fear in various literary and medical manifestations, in the Western World, from medieval to modern times. It is divided into two parts. The first part, Treating Fear, examines fear in medical history, and draws from theology, medicine, philosophy, and psychology, to offer an account of how fear shifts in Western understanding from the Middle Ages to Modern times. The second part, Writing Fear, explores fear as a rhetorical and literary force, offering an account of how it is used and evoked in distinct literary periods and texts. This coherent and fascinating collection will appeal to medical historians, literary critics, cultural theorists, medical humanities’ scholars and historians of the emotions.
