Book Symmetric Neutralized Ion Beams

Download or read book Symmetric Neutralized Ion Beams written by Nathaniel Kenneth Hicks and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents the first integrated experimental, computational, and theoretical research program on symmetric neutralized ion beams. A beam of this type is composed of positive and negative ions having equal charge-to-mass ratios, such that the beam has overall charge neutrality and its constituent ions respond symmetrically to electromagnetic forces. Under the right conditions, these beams may propagate undeflected across transverse magnetic fields due to beam polarization. Such propagation is studied here computationally, using a three-dimensional particle-in-cell code. Also, key theoretical differences between the propagation ability of these beams and that of beams consisting of positive ions and electrons are elucidated.

Book Ion Beam Propagation in a Solenoidal Magnetic Field

Download or read book Ion Beam Propagation in a Solenoidal Magnetic Field written by J. J. Moschella and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study of an intense space charge neutralized ion beam propagating into a solenoidal magnetic field is presented. The data shows that the observed effects are adequately described by a theory for beam propagation. In a previous experiment a similar beam was focused by a short magnetic field where the focal point was outside the field region. This experiment shows that the same theory can be used to describe a beam which comes to a focus within the uniform region of the solenoid. The theory essentially states that ions undergo single particle motion modified by the beam neutralizing electrons which produces focal distances much shorter than ions acting alone. The physics of this type of focusing is similar to the Gabor lens in which electrons that prefill a magnetic mirror produce electrostatic fields which assist in the focusing of a stream of ions. The new theory, assumes a cylindrically symmetric beam which does not significantly perturb the magnetic field, maintenance of local space charge neutrality and perfectly cold neutralizing electrons. Book Positive and Negative Ion Beam Merging System for Neutral Beam Production

Download or read book Positive and Negative Ion Beam Merging System for Neutral Beam Production written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The positive and negative ion beam merging system extracts positive and negative ions of the same species and of the same energy from two separate ion sources. The positive and negative ions from both sources pass through a bending magnetic field region between the pole faces of an electromagnet. Since the positive and negative ions come from mirror image positions on opposite sides of a beam axis, and the positive and negative ions are identical, the trajectories will be symmetrical and the positive and negative ion beams will merge into a single neutral beam as they leave the pole face of the electromagnet. The ion sources are preferably multicusp plasma ion sources. The ion sources may include a multi-aperture extraction system for increasing ion current from the sources.

Book Production and Neutralization of Negative Ions and Beams

Download or read book Production and Neutralization of Negative Ions and Beams written by Joseph D. Sherman and published by American Institute of Physics. This book was released on 2005-04-20 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This symposium addresses all aspects of H- and D- sources, the formation of negative hydrogen and deuterium beams from these sources, and their beam transport properties. The discussion includes both the latest theoretical and experimental work in these areas. The negative ion sources are multicusp, Penning, magnetron, rf (1-13 MHz), surface converter, microwave/ECR (GHz frequency), and polarized source types. Experimental work also includes beam chopping, space-charge lenses, optimized negative ion extraction systems, and beam diagnostics. The negative ion production mechanisms are volume (pure hydrogen or deuterium discharge) and surface production using cesium or other alkali metal to catalyze negative ion production. Theoretical analyses include plasma chemistry, particle-in-cell modeling, and H-/D- extraction physics simulations. The main applications for H- sources are in high-energy neutral beam injectors for fusion reactors and H- sources for charge exchange injection into synchrotrons or spallation neutron source storage rings.

Book Production and Neutralization of Negative Ions and Beams

Download or read book Production and Neutralization of Negative Ions and Beams written by Martin P. Stockli and published by American Inst. of Physics. This book was released on 2002-10-24 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The symposium included 20 formal presentations on recent accomplishments in research and development for the production and neutralization of negative ions and beams. Topics include progress in technical developments and experiences, diagnostic developments, as well as in improved understanding through modeling and theoretical developments. For the first time, a simple, physics-based theoretical treatment was presented to properly model the ion extraction from negative ion sources. In addition, a method was presented that can accurately estimate the rms emittance from measured distributions. The proceedings contain all 20 presentations, written by 60 authors and co-authors, involving 21 institutions worldwide. All papers were peer reviewed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in Astronautics and Aeronautics, Volume 9: Electric Propulsion Development covers the proceedings of the Second Electric Propulsion Conference of the American Rocker Society, held in Berkeley, California on March 14-16, 1962. The conference focuses on the existing problems in electric propulsion and their possible solutions. This book is organized into four sections encompassing 35 chapters. The first section deals with the thermodynamics of arcs; the problems of heat and momentum transfer; the chemical processes within arcs; the arc system materials; and the arc jet design problems. The second section considers the problems of ion systems, the various ion sources, and the neutralization of ion beams. This section also looks into the basic ionization processes, the production and charging of heavy particles, the corrosive properties of cesium, and the ion-optical designs. The third section describes various plasma systems, including helical transmission lines, pulsed pinch accelerators, coaxial systems, and j x B accelerators. The theoretical analyses of these systems are briefly examined. The fourth section includes papers on flight testing of electric propulsion models, on vertical rocket probes, and on satellites, This section also discusses some advanced concepts in electric propulsion, such as air scooping during ascent through the atmosphere, systems design and optimization, and planetary and interplanetary missions. This book is of great value to physicists, space engineers and designers, as well as researchers in the fields of astronautics and aeronautics.

Book Intense Pulsed Ion Beams for Fusion Applications

Download or read book Intense Pulsed Ion Beams for Fusion Applications written by Stanley Humphries (Jr.) and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of this review paper is the field of intense pulsed ion beam generation and the potential application of the beams to fusion research. Considerable progress has been made over the past six years. The ion injectors discussed utilize the introduction of electrons into vacuum acceleration gaps in conjunction with high voltage pulsed power technology to achieve high output current. Power levels from injectors exceeding 1000 MW/cm2 have been obtained for pulse lengths on the order of 10−7 sec. The first part of the paper treats the physics and technology of intense ion beams. The second part is devoted to applications of intense ion beams in fusion research. A number of potential uses in magnetic confinement systems have been proposed.
