Book excerpt: "The main thrust of this book is to deliver a major critique of materialist and rationalist explanations of social and cultural forms, but the in the process Sahlins has given us a much stronger statement of the centrality of symbols in human affairs than have many of our 'practicing' symbolic anthropologists. He demonstrates that symbols enter all phases of social life: those which we tend to regard as strictly pragmatic, or based on concerns with material need or advantage, as well as those which we tend to view as purely symbolic, such as ideology, ritual, myth, moral codes, and the like. . . ."—Robert McKinley, Reviews in Anthropology

Book Symbols of Defeat in the Construction of National Identity

Download or read book Symbols of Defeat in the Construction of National Identity written by Steven Mock and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-12-29 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If nationalism is the assertion of legitimacy for a nation and its effectiveness as a political entity, why do many nations emphasize images of their own defeat in understanding their history? Using Israel, Serbia, France, Greece and Ghana as examples, the author argues that this phenomenon exposes the ambivalence that lurks behind the passions nationalism evokes. Symbols of defeat glorify a nation's ancient past, while reenacting the destruction of that past as a necessary step in constructing a functioning modern society. As a result, these symbols often assume a foundational role in national mythology. Threats to such symbols are perceived as threats to the nation itself and consequently are met with desperation difficult for outsiders to understand.

Book Christian Symbols Ancient Roots

Download or read book Christian Symbols Ancient Roots written by Elizabeth Rees and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 1992 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient peoples articulated and made sense of their lives through the powerful world of symbol, and Christianity absorbed such symbols as blood, corn, fire and water, adding new dimensions of meaning to each one. By medieval times, these symbols provided access to a many-levelled world in which pagan and Christian truths shed light upon each other. During the Age of Reason, the language of symbol was spoken less, and now that symbols are valued once again, Christians often fear to reconnect religious symbols with their ancient roots. As a result the symbol world of modern Christians is often a pale shadow of the world their forebears inhabited. This book selects dominant Christian symbols and places them against the archaic background from which they grew, drawing on myths and rituals of both ancient and contemporary cultures, thereby integrating the worlds of symbol and reality, sacred and secular, myth and history.

Book Symbols in Arts Religion and Culture

Download or read book Symbols in Arts Religion and Culture written by Farrin Chwalkowski and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-12-14 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are a product of nature. Every single cell of our body is made of, and depends, on nature. Our inner soul is heavily influenced by nature. We feel sad if the sun is not shining for a few days, and feel pleasure when drawn to the wonder of flowers and uplifted by the song of birds. We came from nature; we are part of nature. In short, we are nature. Nature has been an intimate part of the human experience from the earliest times. Different religions and cultures, from all corners of the world, have honoured and worshipped nature in art, ritual and literature in their own unique ways. This book shows how we learn about our own human nature, our own sense of identity and how we fit into the larger scheme of life and spirit when we come to better understand how our human ancestors, through art, symbol and myth, expressed their relationship with the natural world.
