Book Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles Hermitage Museum St Petersburg Part IV

Download or read book Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles Hermitage Museum St Petersburg Part IV written by Colin Stewart Sinclair Lyon and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rich collections of the Hermitage Museum include a remarkable series of Norman and later medieval British coins. Unlike the Hermitage's Anglo-Saxon coins which are mainly from Russian finds, the coins in this volume come from three major private collectors of the nineteenth century, Reichel, Stroganov and Plushkin, who purchased internationally. Thus they include some 60 coins of William I that were purchased in London at the Brumell sale of 1850 and derive from the 1833 hoard from Beauworth, Sussex. For the later middle ages the collection is particularly rich in gold coinage. Virtually all of the 493 coins are illustrated for the first time. They will be a valuable source for medieval numismatists and for those interested in the history of the Hermitage and its collections. This volume complements Hermitage Museum, Part I (SCBI 50, ISBN 0-19-726187-6). Parts II and III will follow.

Book Seventeenth Century Tokens of the British Isles and Their Values

Download or read book Seventeenth Century Tokens of the British Isles and Their Values written by Michael Dickinson and published by Trafalgar Square Publishing. This book was released on 1986 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1986, this catalogue is the first publication in over one hundred years to list all known major types of the seventeenth century series of token coinage issued in the British Isles between 1648 and 1679. The tokens were mostly struck in copper or brass in denominations of farthings and half pennies. Commonly they were round, but octagonal, square and heart shaped flans were also used. They offer a fascinating insight into life and trade, personal circumstances and local history in the third quarter of the seventeenth century. The catalogue lists about fourteen thousand different tokens, based on the numbering system used in G.C. Williamson's classic work Trade Tokens Issued in the Seventeenth Century. (two volumes, 1889, 1891). Many tokens have come to light since that date and new entries have been inserted in the appropriate places using numbers with suffix letters. In places, over twenty percent of the tokens listed are 'new'. This is an indispensable catalogue for all collectors of the seventeenth century token series and will also be of great interest and use to local history students and economists interested in the period.

Book American Indians in British Art 1700 1840

Download or read book American Indians in British Art 1700 1840 written by Stephanie Pratt and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2013-02-11 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ask anyone the world over to identify a figure in buckskins with a feather bonnet, and the answer will be “Indian.” Many works of art produced by non-Native artists have reflected such a limited viewpoint. In American Indians in British Art, 1700–1840, Stephanie Pratt explores for the first time an artistic tradition that avoided simplification and that instead portrayed Native peoples in a surprisingly complex light. During the eighteenth century, the British allied themselves with Indian tribes to counter the American colonial rebellion. In response, British artists produced a large volume of work focusing on American Indians. Although these works depicted their subjects as either noble or ignoble savages, they also represented Indians as active participants in contemporary society. Pratt places artistic works in historical context and traces a movement away from abstraction, where Indians were symbols rather than actual people, to representational art, which portrayed Indians as actors on the colonial stage. But Pratt also argues that to view these images as mere illustrations of historical events or individuals would be reductive. As works of art they contain formal characteristics and ideological content that diminish their documentary value.

This book was released on 1958 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. The collection at the National Museums of Scotland is the largest and most comprehensive public collection of this series in the world. The period covered extends from the innovations of James V's second coinage in 1526, up to the harmonisation of the Scottish and English coinages in 1603. The history of Scottish coin production during this period is discussed in the introduction. An essential tool for numismatists, museum curators and coin collectors, this catalogue will also appeal to all those interested in the art of the Renaissance.
