Book excerpt: The Sword of Liberty is a thrilling action-adventure novel about a secret constitutional weapon, crafted by our founders for use in desperate times like these. American spec-op warrior, John Laurens, is drawn to the island of St. Croix for the execution of a secret will. Attached to the official summons, he finds the tale of an ancient sword forged by Zeus at the beginning of time and carried into battle by liberty's greatest heroes, among them, George Washington. At the reading of the will, Laurens is shocked to find himself identified as the only remaining descendant of General Washington. As such, he must lead America back from disaster's edge, by retrieving the Sword of Liberty and revealing the knowledge on which our nation was founded. The book was written on the premise that America's public schools haven't taught the historical lessons requisite to making wise political decisions. In an era necessitating serious governmental change, the loss of America's historical blueprints could prove disastrous.

Book Freedom of Speech

Download or read book Freedom of Speech written by David K. Shipler and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative, timely assessment of the state of free speech in America With his best seller The Working Poor, Pulitzer Prize winner and former New York Times veteran David K. Shipler cemented his place among our most trenchant social commentators. Now he turns his incisive reporting to a critical American ideal: freedom of speech. Anchored in personal stories—sometimes shocking, sometimes absurd, sometimes dishearteningly familiar—Shipler’s investigations of the cultural limits on both expression and the willingness to listen build to expose troubling instabilities in the very foundations of our democracy. Focusing on recent free speech controversies across the nation, Shipler maps a rapidly shifting topography of political and cultural norms: parents in Michigan rallying to teachers vilified for their reading lists; conservative ministers risking their churches’ tax-exempt status to preach politics from the pulpit; national security reporters using techniques more common in dictatorships to avoid leak prosecution; a Washington, D.C., Jewish theater’s struggle for creative control in the face of protests targeting productions critical of Israel; history teachers in Texas quietly bypassing a reactionary curriculum to give students access to unapproved perspectives; the mixed blessings of the Internet as a forum for dialogue about race. These and other stories coalesce to reveal the systemic patterns of both suppression and opportunity that are making today a transitional moment for the future of one of our founding principles. Measured yet sweeping, Freedom of Speech brilliantly reveals the triumphs and challenges of defining and protecting the boundaries of free expression in modern America.

Book Bright Liberty s Forgotten Sword and the Battle of Princeton

Download or read book Bright Liberty s Forgotten Sword and the Battle of Princeton written by John Lawrence Brasher and published by . This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Captain James Moore of the Princeton, New Jersey, militia was a hero of the Revolutionary War Battle of Princeton. A four-decade genealogy search for the unknown original owner of a rare Revolutionary War silver-hilted sword discovers that the sword was his. This unique patriot sword, displaying anti-British iconography, reveals the lives and politics of the leaders and everyday people of Princeton in the Revolutionary War. The search for the story of the sword reveals its eighteenth-century context-its social meanings, its craftsmanship by a young New Jersey silversmith, the symbolism of its designs, and its celebration in ceremonies, art, song, and popular literature. This history is not only about a military artifact but about the dramatic Revolutionary War events in New Jersey that the sword witnessed. If you love American history, rare decorative antique objects, and a mystery, you won't put this book down until the last page is read. This story opens up a lost world of the struggle for American independence in the decisive time of the Revolutionary War.

Book Sword of the Spirit Shield of Faith

Download or read book Sword of the Spirit Shield of Faith written by Andrew Preston and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2012-02-28 with total page 779 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A richly detailed, profoundly engrossing story of how religion has influenced American foreign relations, told through the stories of the men and women—from presidents to preachers—who have plotted the country’s course in the world. Ever since John Winthrop argued that the Puritans’ new home would be “a city upon a hill,” Americans’ role in the world has been shaped by their belief that God has something special in mind for them. But this is a story that historians have mostly ignored. Now, in the first authoritative work on the subject, Andrew Preston explores the major strains of religious fervor—liberal and conservative, pacifist and militant, internationalist and isolationist—that framed American thinking on international issues from the earliest colonial wars to the twenty-first century. He arrives at some startling conclusions, among them: Abraham Lincoln’s use of religion in the Civil War became the model for subsequent wars of humanitarian intervention; nineteenth-century Protestant missionaries made up the first NGO to advance a global human rights agenda; religious liberty was the centerpiece of Franklin Roosevelt’s strategy to bring the United States into World War II. From George Washington to George W. Bush, from the Puritans to the present, from the colonial wars to the Cold War, religion has been one of America’s most powerful sources of ideas about the wider world. When, just days after 9/11, George W. Bush described America as “a prayerful nation, a nation that prays to an almighty God for protection and for peace,” or when Barack Obama spoke of balancing the “just war and the imperatives of a just peace” in his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, they were echoing four hundred years of religious rhetoric. Preston traces this echo back to its source. Sword of the Spirit, Shield of Faith is an unprecedented achievement: no one has yet attempted such a bold synthesis of American history. It is also a remarkable work of balance and fair-mindedness about one of the most fraught subjects in America.

Download or read book The Flaming Sword written by Folayan Osekita and published by . This book was released on 2010-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspiration for the writing of the book: the Flaming Sword came from deep meditation upon the Word of God. The Lord Spoke to me and Told me to go round buying Bibles - especially old ones and different types and editions. Then I came across this huge Bible referred to in the first chapter of the book: A Case For the Word of God: Gateway to True Freedom. What struck me was the fact that men had obeyed God's Word to them and His Leading of them to perform certain tasks like writing the Holy Scriptures and translating the same Holy Scriptures. Just like Noah received Instructions to build the Ark etc. Another thing that struck me was that many people encounter God in life and die without acknowledging or witnessing to that fact. A particular man that I read about in one of the testimonies was not prepared to die without witnessing to the facts of what God had done in his life. That was it. I was caught. God had gotten a good grip on me. I realised that my line of thinking was not my own and that the Lord was actually Speaking to me again. I had been walking very closely with the Lord for several years before this particular encounter. He had Spoken to me that He would use me to speak to the world. I had so many visions and encounters with God's Word previously and in fact to date. I had to pour out my heart. I had to speak to the world of some things the Lord had been Speaking to me about. That was how I started handwriting the book. I wrote the book on my knees mostly in a praying position over a total of about two weeks almost non-stop. I couldn't stop till it was finished. I wrote this book in 2004 after a life-threatening illness. I realise that God spared my life for a reason and I couldn't afford to die with the Word Living in me. I had to share it with the world and quickly. It has interestingly taken about six years for the book to be published. God's Timing is the best. I am fully satisfied that eventually the book got published. I give all the praise and glory to God Almighty in Jesus' Christ. The Flaming Sword is the only sword that can actually separate bone from marrow. It is sharper than any normal double edged sword. It is the Word of God. When the Lord Speaks, He means business. Dishonour His Word at your own peril. But obey the Word of God and be Blessed. For with God, there are Blessings for obedience and curses for disobedience. The Lord has Spoken His Word to me and through me and I have delivered to the best of my ability. The rest is for you my reader. May God Enable you and Bless you to get the best from the book. It is for you. I pray in Jesus' Name. Amen. It is my hope that you, my reader, would read the book in an attitude of reverence and prayer and meditate upon the words written. I believe that the book will benefit you. of course, like any endeavour in life, the tendency is to get from it as much as you put into it. So therefore, to get the best of the book you must apply yourself to it in terms of commitment. Even if you have no faith at all, just decide that you are going to learn something new and that you will not read the book in vain and you will be Blessed in Jesus' Name.
