Book excerpt: Were the Prophet Muhammad's words divine or were they caused by epilepsy? The Middle East is aflame with war, and the conflict between East and West is so pronounced that some are calling it World War III. The fighting is not so much between nations as between the forces of religions.Few men have affected mankind as much as the Prophet Muhammad. But since the early years of Islam there have been those who have questioned if his revelations were divine or were the result of an epileptic condition. Although many authors have investigated this notion, there has never been a comprehensive examination of the matter until Sword and Seizure. This book is an in-depth investigation of the question. The book also shows you how Islam began, and how it developed.

Book excerpt: The bestselling, award-winning author of The American Invasion of Canada “has given great drama and immediacy to that turning point in Canadian history” (Maclean’s). On Easter Monday 1917 with a blizzard blowing in their faces, the four divisions of the Canadian Corps in France seized and held the best-defended German bastion on the Western Front—the muddy scarp of Vimy Ridge. The British had failed to take the Ridge, and so had the French who had lost 150,000 men in the attempt. Yet these magnificent colonial troops did so in a morning at the cost of only 10,000 casualties. The author recounts this remarkable feat of arms with both pace and style. He has gathered many personal accounts from soldiers who fought at Vimy. He describes the commanders and the men, the organization and the training, and above all notes the thorough preparation for the attack from which the British General Staff could have learned much. The action is placed within the context both of the Battle of Arras, of which this attack was part, and as a milestone in the development of Canada as a nation. “This wonderful book brings to life the amazing men who came across the Atlantic nearly a century ago and won a famous victory which helped change a nation forever . . . the wonderful prose of Pierre Berton is all from the heart and you should share in it.” —War History Online “The cinematic writing plunks the reader in the midst of the actual battle, and a judicious use of quotes from soldiers’ diaries and letters helps provide a ground-level perspective.” —Quill & Quire

Download or read book At Sword s Point Part 1 written by William P. MacKinnon and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2016-10-27 with total page 725 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Utah War of 1857–58, the unprecedented armed confrontation between Mormon Utah Territory and the U.S. government, was the most extensive American military action between the Mexican and Civil wars. At Sword’s Point presents in two volumes the first in-depth narrative and documentary history of that extraordinary conflict. William P. MacKinnon offers a lively narrative linking firsthand accounts—most previously unknown—from soldiers and civilians on both sides. This first volume traces the war’s causes and preliminary events, including President Buchanan’s decision to replace Brigham Young as governor of Utah and restore federal authority through a large army expedition. Also examined are Young’s defensive-aggressive reactions, the onset of armed hostilities, and Thomas L. Kane’s departure at the end of 1857 for his now-famous mediating mission to Utah. MacKinnon provides a balanced, comprehensive account, based on a half century of research and a wealth of carefully selected new material. Women’s voices from both sides enrich this colorful story. At Sword’s Point presents the Utah War as a sprawling confrontation with regional and international as well as territorial impact. As a nonpartisan definitive work, it eclipses previous studies of this remarkably bloody turning point in western, military, and Mormon history.

Book The Encyclopedia of the Sword

Download or read book The Encyclopedia of the Sword written by Nick Evangelista and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1995-05-23 with total page 716 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the gruff, sword-toting swashbucklers of the Middle Ages to modern adventure epics like The Princess Bride, the aura surrounding the sword is one that is both romantic and pragmatic. Thoughts of this weapon bring to mind images of the Knights of the Round Table, Zorro, the Three Musketeers—the things daydreams are made of. Historically, the fate of the empires revolved around the sword; nations rose and fell based on the power of their swordsmen. For centuries it was the weapon of choice in settling personal disputes. Today, the art of sword fighting has been incarnated as the dynamic, chess-like sport of fencing. It has also played an important part in the history of theatre and film, and it has been part of literature for as long as there have been books. In its varied guises, the sword has for centuries figured in the world's varied cultures, myths, and politics. Yet, there has never been a comprehensive volume on the subject of the sword until the publication of this encyclopedia. For the first time, in a single volume one can locate information on the history of sword types and styles around the world; techniques of combat sword use; techniques and styles of modern sport fencing; names and descriptions of various fencing implements and weapon types; swashbuckler films and the fencing masters who influenced the genre; significant individuals who have taught sword use; the sword at the Olympics; the literature in which the rapier, foil, or broadsword has figured; and much, much more. Essential reading for fencing and military history enthusiasts.

Translated by the widely respected occultist and scholar John Michael Greer, this stunningly illustrated and precisely detailed manual of Renaissance swordsmanship is a triumphant document of Renaissance culture-as well as a practical manual of a martial art that can still be studied and practiced today.

I finally reduced my choice to two titles, the second one being used as the sub-title: "THE VATICAN CIPHERS". If I had not been so sensative to the economic and social consequences of the Kennedy and Lincoln assassinations, this would have been the actual title, because more than anything else this is about the early invention of our languages. Some of the most important discoveries include the following: Religious names and words such as Christ, Thomas, crucifixion and others were used as roots to invent many of our modern day words, but they were originally written phonetically, and then hidden away when dictionaries standardized our spelling of words. A technique was discovered showing how rootwords and rootnames were used to create other words and ideas and then those ideas and words were used to create detail in short stories especially myths and religious fables of the New Testament. Since this technique was not known to exist, if fell on me to invent a name for it, I named it the ROOTWORD TECHNIQUE. Finally, I discovered that the alphabet was pictorial, or hieroglyphic. The wordsmiths who created our vocabulary used the letters as pictures as well as symbols for sounds.
