Book excerpt: An existing cold jet facility at NASA-Lewis was modified to produce swirling flows with controllable initial tangential velocity distribution. Distinctly different swirl velocity profiles were produced, and their effects on jet mixing characteristics were measured downstream of an 11.43 cm diameter convergent nozzle. It was experimentally shown that in the near field of a swirling turbulent jet, the mean velocity field strongly depends on the initial swirl profile. Two extreme tangential velocity distributions were produced. The two jets shared approximately the same initial mass flow rate of 5.9 kg/s, mass averaged axial Mach number and swirl number. Mean centerline velocity decay characteristics of the solid body rotation jet flow exhibited classical decay features of a swirling jet with S = 0.48 reported in the literature. Book excerpt: The work reports an experimental study of the effect of swirl on the structure of a liquid spray, i.e., on the behavior of drops and their interaction with the gaseous phase, and on the velocity and turbulence fields of the spray in the swirling flow. Three vane-type swirlers having low, medium, and high swirl numbers were used in the tests. The swirlers were placed on the liquid supply tube of a pressure atomizer and tested in the wind tunnel under specified conditions. Properties of the dispersed phase such as velocity and size distributions, particle number density, and volume flux were measured at several locations within the swirling flow field. In addition, mean velocity and turbulence properties were obtained for the gas phase. The results show that flow reversal of the drops is present at the high swirl number within the recirculation region. The spatial distribution of drops reveals a widening of the spray with increasing swirl strength while the concentration of large drops is shown to increase near the core of the swirling field with increasing swirl number. Plots of the turbulence kinetic energy, normal Reynolds stresses, and Reynolds shear stresses show double-peak radial distributions, which indicate regions in the flow where high energy content, mean velocity gradients, and large shear forces are present. The decay of turbulence velocities in the axial direction was observed to be very fast, an indication of high diffusion and dissipation rates of the kinetic energy of turbulence. The significance of the turbulence measurements is that these double-peak profiles indicate a deviation of the swirling spray from isotropy. This information should be relevant to researchers modeling these complex flows.

Book excerpt: Turbulence, mixing and the mutual interaction of turbulence and chemistry continue to remain perplexing and impregnable in the fron tiers of fluid mechanics. The past ten years have brought enormous advances in computers and computational techniques on the one hand and in measurements and data processing on the other. The impact of such capabilities has led to a revolution both in the understanding of the structure of turbulence as well as in the predictive methods for application in technology. The early ideas on turbulence being an array of complicated phenomena and having some form of reasonably strong coherent struc ture have become well substantiated in recent experimental work. We are still at the very beginning of understanding all of the aspects of such coherence and of the possibilities of incorporating such structure into the analytical models for even those cases where the thin shear layer approximation may be valid. Nevertheless a distinguished body of "eddy chasers" has come into existence. The structure of mixing layers which has been studied for some years in terms of correlations and spectral analysis is also getting better understood. Both probability concepts such as intermittency and conditional sampling as well as the concept of large scale structure and the associated strain seem to indicate possibilities of distinguishing and synthesizing 'engulfment' and molecular mixing.

Effects of using swirl on flow and combustion are significant and varied, and concern, for example, aerodynamics, mixing, flame stability, intensity of combustion, and pollutant emissions. The purpose of this book is to present recent research efforts to understand and characterize swirling flows of different types and in different applications. These include gaseous, liquid, and solid fuels in order to enhance combustion systems and their energy efficiency. Swirl flows are very complex and the studies proposed in this project are based on different means, including theoretical calculations, numerical modeling, and experimental measurements.

Book excerpt: The aim of the present work is to provide global insight on the turbulent mixing processes typically occurring in a rectangular perspex mixing module simulating a sector of an annular RQL gas turbine combustor, through an experimental investigation of non reacting multiple jet mixing with a confined swirling crossflow. The RQL (Rich burn - quick Quench - Lean burn) staged combustion concept has been proposed as one of the candidate technologies towards reducing NOx emissions in gas turbine combustion systems. Mean and fluctuating momentum and scalar field distributions, mixing rate and standard deviation were determined in a number of different test cases obtained by parametric variation of flow and geometric configuration conditions. The results clearly indicate the sensitivity of the attained mixing quality on the particular flow arrangement, the momentum flux ratio and the effect of swirl induced in the primary zone.

For the foreseeable future, coal will continue to be the dominant fuel used for electric power production. The low cost and abundance of coal is one of the primary reasons for this. Electric power transmission, a process in the delivery of electricity to consumers, is the bulk transfer of electrical power. Typically, power transmission is between the power plant and a substation near a populated area. Electricity distribution is the delivery from the substation to the consumers. Due to the large amount of power involved, transmission normally takes place at high voltage (110 kV or above). Electricity is usually transmitted over long distance through overhead power transmission lines. Underground power transmission is used only in densely populated areas due to its high cost of installation and maintenance, and because the high reactive power gain produces large charging currents and difficulties in voltage management. A power transmission system is sometimes referred to colloquially as a "grid"; however, for reasons of economy, the network is rarely a true grid. Redundant paths and lines are provided so that power can be routed from any power plant to any load centre, through a variety of routes, based on the economics of the transmission path and the cost of power. Much analysis is done by transmission companies to determine the maximum reliable capacity of each line, which, due to system stability considerations, may be less than the physical or thermal limit of the line. Deregulation of electricity companies in many countries has led to renewed interest in reliable economic design of transmission networks.
