This book was released on 2017-05-25 with total page 838 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Cattle, Sheep, Goats and Swine No apology seems called for in presenting to English-speaking veterinary surgeons and students a treatise 011 the diseases of cattle. To those entrusted with the onerous task of preventing or curing disease in cattle, sheep, and swine the scantiness of permanent literature dealing with the subject must always have proved a matter of some embarrass ment, while to teachers and students alike the want of a concise and modern text-book has long been a difficulty of the first order. It is hoped that the present volume may go some way towards remedying this state of affairs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Swine: With Particluar Reference to Hog-Cholera In writing this work it has been the object of the author to prepare a book to meet the constantly increasing demand for a volume that will give an intelligent interpretation of recent advances in the study of pathology of diseases of the hog, and the application of the newer therapeutic discoveries in their treatment. No single branch of agricultural industry has made as rapid advancement in the past twenty-five years as the swine-producing business. It is only a short time ago that hogs were practically a drug on the market. I can remember in the late 90's when fat hogs sold for 3 cents a pound live weight in the Corn Belt States. This same class of hogs to-day are worth from 9 to 11 cents a pound. This enormous increase in the value of hogs from a financial standpoint has given a marked stimulus to the swine-producing industry, and has developed a desire on the part of hog owners to give their sick hogs the very best possible attention, as the death of one of these animals means a large financial loss. The veterinarian has also been called upon more frequently to treat sick hogs, and this part of his practice is becoming a considerable item in the business of every practising veterinarian. The development of hog-cholera serum as a means for management of hog-cholera has given an added stimulus in the past ten years to the demand for scientific treatment of sick hogs. Both veterinarian and farmer have been quick to realize the importance of this new means of treatment, and there is a widespread demand for complete explanation of the underlying scientific basis for this means of combating the disease. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diseases of Swine: Written as a Text Book for the Veterinary Surgeon, Student and Swine Grower Iseases of the pig have not been hitherto adequately represented in veterinary literature as they should have been, especially-in this country where the growing of pigs is one of the principal industries, represented by hundreds of thousands of dollars. I have been surprised that some of my professional brethren have not taken up this work, but I supj pose that lack of time and opportunity prevented them from so doing. Some ten years ago I was urged by some of my friends to undertake such work, but having so little literature on the subject to cull from, I hesitated to do so, but since com ing to Illinois I have had ample Opportunity of investigating all the diseases of swine. The subjects dealt with are based on science and confirmed by experience, so that the reader will not lose time' 1n reading theories which are not confirmed by facts. There are a few diseases of swine, such as thumps, partial paralysis of the hind quarters and canker of the mouth, which will in the majority of cases prove fatal. These diseases have been thoroughly in vestigated and the proper remedies discovered, and if adminis tered as set forth in this treatise the majority of the affected pigs will recover. I have, with the assistance of Doctor Burrill, Professor of Bacteriology in the University of Illinois, investi gated extensively hog cholera, and have made considerable headway in treating the disease successfully. These results and treatment will be found in this volume. It also contains as an introduction an article on the health of the pig which will be of great service to the swine breeder. The book con tains a number of illustrations which will be helpful to the reader. My hope is that this manual will fill a long felt want to the veterinary surgeon and swine grower. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Parasites and Parasitic Diseases of Swine in Puerto Rico Yards should not be situated so that one can drain, into another. In all cases, the rotation of yards or pastures is very desirable. Each year or oftener a. Fresh lot should be occupied and, unless plowed, at least 1 year should elapse between successive occupations. Other aids in disinfection are plowing two or more times a year and fre quent applications of air-slaked lime to the yards and feeding places. Hogs should not be confined in small, covered pens unless the floors are of tight construction, preferably of concrete, and are kept in a dry, sanitary condition and free of dust. As parasites among uh confined pigs which range over a wide territory are less subject to control by preventive measures, these animals should be confined in sanitary yards or pastures. Cultivated pastures should receive more attention, as several valuable cr0ps for hogs can be grown and pastures can be used during the entire year. Download or read book Brucellosis of Swine Classic Reprint written by Arthur Burdick Crawford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-03 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brucellosis of Swine Neither the blood test nor the skin test alone can, in most instances, be used effectively in the eradication of swine brucellosis in a herd. Experimental results have been borne out in actual field trials using the method of test and slaughter of reactors to eradicate the disease. In one trial, after 4: years of slaughtering of reactors, infected animals were still found in the herd. The diagnostic test, however, may be used to advantage in conjunction with other methods in the control of this disease as will be discussed in the section on control. No drug, medicine, or biologic agent has been found effective in. Preventing or curing brucellosis in swine. The apparently beneficial results following treatment may be attributed to the tendency of the disease to be self-limiting, and not to medication used. Book The American Cattle Doctor

Download or read book The American Cattle Doctor written by George H. Dadd and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Cattle Doctor: A Complete Work on All the Diseases of Cattle, Sheep and Swine Americans rank high in the estimation of the scientific world for their genius and industry in the great work of intellectual, moral, and scientific improvements. See what has occurred in the arts of printing, electrotyping, etc. The eloquence of the great literary magicians of the New World, the honored graduates of free institutions and free schools, no sooner falls from their lips than the phonographist transfers it to paper, the nimble fingers of the compositor puts it into "form;" next the "battery" deposits on the face of the type a more durable coating of copper, and "Hoe's press" sends off "impressions" with almost magical rapidity. No less surprising are the wonderful feats performed by American mechanics, in the construction of fast yachts and steamers, which often pluck a laurel from the so-called "Mistress of the Sea;" and old "Uncle John" gives us due credit for perfecting a race of fast trotters that can beat the world of horseflesh. Improvements in every department of Science and Art are constantly treading on the heels of improvement; yet, as regards the science of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery, America seems almost the last among civilized nations to put her shoulder to the wheel. What can be the reason? Her youth may be offered as a plea for excuses. The daughter of the Old World has not yet, in this department, arrived at years of discretion; she is yet in her teens. Book Pork Production

Download or read book Pork Production written by William W. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pork-Production: With a Chapter on the Prevention of Hog Diseases The material in this book has been drawn from three sources: from practical experience; experimental studies, particularly of feeding questions; and the results of research in the field of chemistry and biology. The discussion on general care and herd management is chiefly a statement of the methods that have proved most successful in practical experience. That part of the book dealing with questions of feeding is largely the result of a careful analysis and summary of the mass of experimental data available on this subject. The discussion of breeding problems has for its foundation the approved methods of the constructive breeders and the important facts recently discovered in the field of genetics which have a bearing on the practical questions related to animal breeding. In its preparation the author has sought and received many facts and suggestions from hog men, commission salesmen, experiment station workers, packing-house officials, and animal husbandry teachers, without which the book in its present form would not have been possible. For the help thus received he wishes to express grateful acknowledgment. For much of the data presented in chapter five he is indebted to W. J. Carmichael formerly of Illinois University and now secretary of the National Swine Growers Association. To the members of the Animal Husbandry staff of Purdue University he wishes to express his appreciation of their kindly criticisms, encouragement, and help. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Hog: His Habits, Breeds, Management, and Diseases, With Especial Reference to the Disease Called Hog Cholera, Together With a Chapter on Trichina After many years of study and labor, and much perplexity, the author offers the results of his experience and investigations to the public. He has used his best endeavors to make the work interesting to the reader, by going somewhat at length into the history of the hog; and, as he hopes, profitable to the raiser by calling his attention to the proper management of this valuable animal, both in health and in disease. Although much has been written on the subject of breeds and breeding, the author has also given his observations and experience on the subject, in the hope that they may be found of service to the reader. But the chief object of the work in its inception was to give a thorough and complete account of that terrible disease amongst the swine known as "hog Cholera." On this subject great labor, time, and expense has been bestowed. To the investigation of this disease many weary hours of study have been given, in order to determine the nature of the disease and the true causes producing it. Great painstaking and many tedious experiments, under many discouragements, were found necessary. The author believes that he has finally discovered the true sources of this dreaded malady. He believes that if his instructions are faithfully carried into practice that hog cholera will become a rarity.
