Book Phraseology

Download or read book Phraseology written by Sylviane Granger and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long regarded as a peripheral issue, phraseology is now taking centre stage in a wide range of fields. This recent explosion of interest undoubtedly has a great deal to do with the development of corpus linguistics research, which has both demonstrated the key role of phraseological expressions in language and provided researchers with automated methods of extraction and analysis. The aim of this volume is to take stock of current research in phraseology from a variety of perspectives: theoretical, descriptive, contrastive, cultural, lexicographic and computational. It contains overview chapters by leading experts in the field and a series of case studies focusing on a wide range of multiword units: collocations, similes, idioms, routine formulae and recurrent phrases. The volume is an invitation for experienced phraseologists to look at the field with different eyes and a useful introduction for the many researchers who are intrigued by phraseology but need help in finding their way in this rich but complex domain.

Book Swimming Upstream

Download or read book Swimming Upstream written by Shirley Zinn and published by eBook Partnership. This book was released on 2016-02-29 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shirley Zinn's story is one of determination, courage, and triumph over incredible adversity. Born and raised on the Cape Flats, Shirley never allowed her past to dictate her future. She proved that the typical story of a girl from the Cape Flats - that of gangsterism, alcoholism and teenage pregnancy - didn't have to be her story. Instead she relentlessly pursued her own goals and forged an impressive academic career even when she faced significant odds. And when she'd done that, she set out to conquer the world of business. Shirley is a formidable woman with an amazing story to tell. She has risen to the top of the pile in both academic and business circles, and yet she has retained great humanity and empathy in the face of great personal tragedy. Her story has lessons for us all - whether we are ordinary or extraordinary, whether we work in business, in government, or at home. Shirley's story will inspire you and show you that it is possible to achieve your goals, if you are prepared to swim upstream and be single-minded in getting where you want to be.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the challenges and possibilities facing contemporary theological inquiry. Produced in honor of Wallace M. Alston, the book is framed around the areas of discussion that Alston, as director of the Center of Theological Inquiry in Princeton, New Jersey, has diligently placed at the forefront of Christian reflection. Written by some of today's leading Christian pastors and theologians, these insightful chapters probe topics of interest to both the church and the academy. In the first section Denise M. Ackermann, Gerhard Sauter, William Schweiker, Max L. Stackhouse, Michael Welker, and Carver T. Yu examine cultural, social, political, and ethical challenges to Christian theology. In the second section Don Browning, Brian E. Daley, Botond Gal, Niels Henrik Gregersen, John Polkinghorne, and Dirk Smit discuss theology's ongoing dialogue with the sciences and the humanities. In the third section Milner S. Ball, L. Ann Jervis, John S. McClure, Allen C. McSween Jr., Patrick D. Miller, Jrgen Moltmann, Fleming Rutledge, and Virgil Thompson illuminate the role of theology in preaching and teaching. In the fourth and final section of the book David Fergusson, Thomas W. Gillespie, Colin Gunton, Cynthia A. Jarvis, Robert W. Jenson, J. Harold McKeithen Jr., A. J. McKelway, Daniel L. Migliore look at several cutting-edge themes drawn from Reformed and ecumenical theology. Loving God with Our Minds unites voices from the various enterprises of the Center of Theological Inquiry, from different churches, from different theological and academic disciplines, and from different countries across the globe. The book is thus a bouquet of diverse perspectives mirroring what is so central and admirable in Wallace Alston and reflecting what he so desires to see among fellow Christians and pastor-theologians -- loving God not only with our hearts but also with our minds. Book Confessional Theology

    Book Details:
  • Author : Rothney S. Tshaka
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing
  • Release : 2010-04-16
  • ISBN : 1443822132
  • Pages : 280 pages

Download or read book Confessional Theology written by Rothney S. Tshaka and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-04-16 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christian confessions are usually seen as statements of faith which has no relationship with politics. The result is a tendency to view these documents as theological but not political. This study discusses this misconception but adds that although these documents are not to be perceived as political per se, that they can nonetheless not ignore the political contexts from which they emerge. Two confesional documents are discussed to illustrate the point, viz the Barmen Theological Declaration (1934) in Nazi-Germany as well as the Belhar Confession (1986) during apartheid South Africa. The findings of the study is that the theology of Karl Barth and therefore the Belhar Confession establishes and unavoidable link between christian confessions and politics. The word ‘confession’ is used here in relation to Barth’s interpretation of our responsibility to speak about God because of the fact that we are christian and also our inability to speak about God as if God is known in God’s entirety to us. Seen in this way, confesional theology is opposed to tendencies that gives the impresion that we are able to speak about God as if we know Him in His entirety. Five characteristics in the theology of Barth are investigaed. These characteristics illustrate the degree to which theology is related to politics. It also point to the fact that politics was never a marginal factor in the theological reflections of Barth. The study suggests that the theology of Barth remains relevant because it interprets the Word in a manner that does not ignore the contexts in which this interpretation of the Word takes place. The study furthermore suggests that the entire theology of Barth can be construed as confessional theology. It arrives at this end and makes very clear that confessional theology differs fundamentally from ‘confessonalism,’ but that confessional theology always calls for those who espouse it to embody that which is confessed. To uphold the characteristics of confessional theology in the theology of Barth, it is agreed that his theology continued to play significant roles in different theological contexts. It is because of this view that it is argued that the theology of Barth had a great influence on the Belhar Confession. The debate around the Belhar Confession brings further important questions about the theological situation in South Africa today. In the end it is suggested that confessional theology is a significant theological method which can safeguard theology from the claws of ‘theologised politics.’ Confessional theology can thus make a significant contribution to the current theological debates in democratic South Africa.
