The alloys were variations on Fe-13Cr-15Ni-0.05P with respective additions of 0.8 silicon, 0.2 titanium, or 0.8 silicon plus 0.2 titanium; also included were low (0.01) and zero phosphorus compositions (all values in wt %). This alloy set was studied previously using heavy ion irradiations.

The reference ternary and the two phosphorous-only variations contained little precipitation and numerous voids and swelled rapidly, while the three variants containing P with Si and/or Ti showed little or no void formation and profuse phosphide precipitation. Results indicate that phosphorous in solution alone does not have a major influence on void swelling, whereas fine-scale phosphide precipitation is quite effective at eliminating void formation. The principal mechanism restricting swelling is the effect of the dense precipitate microstructure. These precipitates foster profuse cavity nucleation which in turn dilutes the helium atoms (and more time) in order for individual cavities to surpass their critical size and number of gas atoms necessary for subsequent growth as voids. This mechanism for swelling suppression was not found to be particularly sensitive to moderate variations in either the dislocation or cavity densities; the mechanism is strongest at elevated temperature where the critical quantities are large and is less effective at lower temperatures where the critical quantities are small. 19 refs., 10 figs., 3 tabs.

Book excerpt: Five simple alloys were ion irradiated at 948°K in an experiment designed to investigate the mechanism of swelling suppression associated with phosphorous additions. One of the alloys was the simple ternary Fe-15Ni-13Cr, another had 0.05% P added and the other three had further additions of the phosphide precipitate-forming elements Ti and/or Si. Ion irradiations were carried out with heavy ions only (Ni or Fe) or with heavy ions followed by dual heavy ions and helium. The ternary with and without P swelled readily early in dose with or without helium. The other three alloys only showed swelling in the presence of helium and exhibited a long delay in dose prior to the onset of swelling. These displayed fine distributions of Fe2P type phosphide precipitates enhanced by irradiation. The phosphide particles gave rise to very high concentrations of stable helium filled cavities at the precipitate matrix interfaces. The results were analyzed in terms of the theory of cavity swelling. The accumulation of the critical number of gas atoms in an individual cavity is required in the theory for point defect driven swelling to begin. It is concluded that the primary mechanism leading to swelling suppression is therefore the dilution of injected helium over a very large number of cavities. It is suggested that this mechanism may offer a key for alloy design for swelling resistance in high helium environments.

Book excerpt: A series of three Fe-15Cr-XNi alloys in both annealed and cold worked conditions was irradiated in the fast flux test facility (FFTF) at 495°C to 14 dpa. The experiment was developed to determine the separate and synergistic effects of nickel and phosphorus content, cold work, and helium/dpa ratio. This experiment was conducted without introducing variations in displacement rate, a variable known to strongly influence microstructural evolution. Each alloy condition was irradiated in two variants, one with natural nickel and one enhanced with the 59Ni isotope. The latter variant produces helium/dpa ratios typical of fusion reactor spectra while the former yields a much lower level of helium. The results show that helium alters the microstructural evolution somewhat at 495°C, but its effect is relatively small compared to the influences of the other variables studied. Increases in starting dislocation density, nickel content, or phosphorus level all retard swelling temporarily while higher rates of helium generation usually, but not always, accelerate swelling. Phosphorus addition of 0.04 wt% not only decreased swelling but led to refinement of dislocation loop microstructure and stabilization of dislocation networks created by cold working. Phosphide precipitates did not form at this temperature and dose level.

This substitution is desired to achieve a reduced level of long-term radioactivity and thereby reduce the cost and safety hazards associated with disposal of reactor components at their end of life. Neutron-induced swelling data to 50 dpa are now available at 520°C for three reduced activation alloy series and for lower exposures at 420 and 600°C. These three series cover simple binary and ternary alloys, solute-modified ternaries, and a variety of commercially available Fe-Cr-Mn alloys. The swelling of these alloys is initially similar to that of Fe-Cr-Ni alloys but then changes in response to phase instabilities that develop in the Fe-Cr-Mn system.

Book excerpt: A previously published correlation between the compositional dependence of neutron-induced swelling at high temperatures in Fe-Ni-Cr alloys and the development of compositional micro-oscillations has also been found in this study of swelling induced by 5-MeV Ni+ ion irradiation. The tendency toward decomposition is strongest in the 35 to 45% nickel range and diminishes in the range of 60 to 75% nickel. Chromium appears to play no role other than as a surrogate for iron. The scale of the micro-oscillation appears to be more sensitive to temperature than displacement rate. One consequence of this decomposition is the occasional formation of precipitate phases upon cooling after irradiation. In Fe-35Ni, cellular martensite is found to form after irradiation at 625, 675, and 725°C. In Fe-60Ni-15Cr irradiated at 625°C an ordered phase that may be Ni3(Fe,Cr) is sometimes formed. The fortuitous formation of these phases allows the visualization of the size and spacing of the compositional modulations.

Book excerpt: The radiation-induced swelling of simple Fe-Cr-Ni austenitic alloys is known to be very sensitive to solute additions. It is shown in this paper that three of the most common solute elements (P,Si,Mo) exert a very complex and often non-monotonic influence on swelling with increasing solute level. The complexity of this influence and its dependence on other variables appears to be the result of a closely balanced competition between two or more roles played by each solute in its interaction with both vacancies and interstitials. This competition yields a variety of different swelling behaviors in response to changes in solute or solvent composition, displacement rate, and irradiation temperature.

Contrary to the behavior of swelling of model fcc Fe-Cr-Ni alloys irradiated in the same FFTF-MOTA experiment, model bcc Fe-Cr alloys do not exhibit a dependence of swelling on dpa rate at approximately 400 degrees C. This is surprising in that an apparent flux-sensitivity was observed in an earlier comparative irradiation of Fe-Cr binaries conducted in EBR-II and FFTF. The difference in behavior is ascribed to the higher helium generation rates of Fe-Cr alloys in EBR-II compared to that of FFTF, and also the fact that lower dpa rates in FFTF are accompanied by progressively lower helium generation rates.
