Book excerpt: From buffalo hunters and ranchers to rattlesnake hunters and wind farmers, Sweetwater has a rich and diverse history of hearty people flourishing in a harsh environment. Beginning with the Kiowa, Apaches, and Comanche, who migrated through the area following herds, and continuing with hunters after the Civil War, Sweetwater, like many West Texas towns, owes its inception to the buffalo. After the war, the demand for beef, hides, and tallow in the North escalated, requiring hunters to reduce buffalo populations, both for their prized hides and to make room for cattle. The slaughter reached its peak in the South in the 1870s, and in 1877, Billie Knight set up a small store on the banks of Sweetwater Creek to accommodate hunters and ranchers. Since the construction of this humble dugout, the town of Sweetwater has had one racetrack, two locations, three names, four courthouses, and countless snakes, wild fires, and tornadoes.

Book excerpt: Give Them Nothing. Give Them Nothing to Report, and You Might Just Succeed. Three years since their return, Kai and the others find themselves living independently in an unfamiliar world. The Schema’s influence looms larger than they could’ve ever imagined, permeating nearly all aspects of modern life. From guiding global policy to selecting your evening’s entrée, State’s feedback program snuffs out uncertainty to protect society at-large. Partnering with State, companies like Dynamism and Normalized Securities utilize the Schema to offer critical insight for their customers, shielding them from whatever hazards may lurk within their futures. But despite widespread adoption, a handful of mysterious cases call into question the Schema’s accuracy—and State’s willingness to redact its mistakes. According to scripture, an ancient figure once prophesied the return of three chosen travelers, commonly known as Precedents. Each of them hide in plain sight. Only Kai is truly lost. "Profound...dazzling...with a tragic humor about what we believe." -Heather Sharfeddin, Sweetwater Burning Intempra is the final book in The Schema Trilogy by Avery Dox.

After cry pilot Maseo Kaytu's white-knuckled victory over the mysterious lampreys at Ayko Base, military command develops new weapons and a new strategy. The updated mission is simple: pinpoint the Hatchery, the “spawn point” of the lampreys, and blast it into a fine powder. Kaytu's battle-tested squad tracks the enemy from remote bases to elegant cities to subterranean caverns, but the lampreys start hitting harder and faster. While the squad is winning battles, Earth is losing the war. When the search for the Hatchery shines a light on Kaytu's insurgent past, he faces a terrible truth. There is no line he won't cross to protect his squad. Then a vicious counterattack teaches him another lesson: you can't save everyone. In the end, all you can do is the job.

In the bayfront land of Tenoch, the death of Roberts Tolyem has exposed a vulnerability that citizens haven’t felt in decades. Those who saw their once-meager lives transform into a world of opulence and prosperity now question what future awaits them. Tenoch’s sudden rise as a global power left it with countless adversaries from all sides of the bay—including the tribe it conquered in a violent resurgence just generations prior. Mounting international tensions, fueled by nuclear capabilities, approach a fever pitch. Beneath Tenoch’s unrest lurks a marvel of modern engineering. Fusing chemistry and computing, this top-secret discovery could advance civilization further than the internet, electrical circuit, or even the wheel. Whether it can survive Tenoch’s forthcoming regime change will depend on an unlikely encounter between enemy agents, fierce allies, and unwitting bystanders. Swept into the turmoil is Kai Navarro, a boy who’s never left his native village. "From the moment I met Kai to the stunning conclusion of this novel, I was hooked...A fantastic story that leaves you begging or more." -Heather Sharfeddin, Sweetwater Burning Humility is the first book in The Schema Trilogy by Avery Dox.
