Book excerpt: A Native rereading of both British Romanticism and mainstream Euro-American ecocriticism, this cross-cultural transatlantic study of literary imaginings about birds sets the agenda for a more sophisticated and nuanced ecocriticism. Lakota critic Thomas C. Gannon explores how poets and nature writers in Britain and Native America have incorporated birds into their writings. He discerns an evolution in humankind's representations--and attitudes toward--other species by examining the avian images and tropes in British Romantic and Native American literatures, and by considering how such literary tr.

Book excerpt: Mist Upon the Pond is a collection of the author's favorite poems, some published, many unpublished, but all aimed squarely at the heartstrings, the bootstraps or the funny bone. As the author says, ". . . the form ever-changing, like the mist upon the pond . . ." A variety of poetic forms and styles, from humorous haiku to heart-wrenching historical narratives, is in this collection. The author's love of the natural world and her passion for history perme-ate many of the offerings, as does her deep, abiding faith in God and love of family. There are light-hearted children's poems and tongue-in-cheek glimpses of sports. Mist Upon the Pond is a collection of eighty-five poems written by the author over the last six years. They are presented here to enter-tain, encourage, amuse, inspire, give comfort and provoke thought. A lifelong resident of Mechanicville, New York, Sandra E. McBride is the mother of six grown children and grandmother of sixteen. She and her hus-band, Tom, reside on the farm that has been in the McBride family for nearly a century. Her childhood dream of becoming a creative writer was put on hold while she reared her fam-ily. Then, at age 55, she enrolled in a writing course at the Institute of Children's Literature and began to pursue that dream in earnest. "You're never too old to chase the dream," she says. Her poetry has appeared in five June Cotner anthologies, in Once Upon a Time, NEWN, Mail Call Journal and online at historyonline.net and Magic Lark Journal. She has published several short stories, and has won numerous awards for her writing. In April 2004, she was honored by her hometown library as their featured poet for National Poetry Month.

Book Dave Brubeck s Time Out

    Book Details:
  • Author : Stephen A. Crist
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2019-09-04
  • ISBN : 0190217731
  • Pages : 208 pages

Download or read book Dave Brubeck s Time Out written by Stephen A. Crist and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-04 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dave Brubeck's Time Out ranks among the most popular, successful, and influential jazz albums of all time. Released by Columbia in 1959, alongside such other landmark albums as Miles Davis's Kind of Blue and Charles Mingus's Mingus Ah Um, Time Out became one of the first jazz albums to be certified platinum, while its featured track, "Take Five," became the best-selling jazz single of the twentieth century, surpassing one million copies. In addition to its commercial successes, the album is widely recognized as a pioneering endeavor into the use of odd meters in jazz. With its opening track "Blue Rondo à la Turk" written in 9/8, its hit single "Take Five" in 5/4, and equally innovative uses of the more common 3/4 and 4/4 meters on other tracks, Time Out has played an important role in the development of modern jazz. In this book, author Stephen A. Crist draws on nearly fifteen years of archival research to offer the most thorough examination to date of this seminal jazz album. Supplementing his research with interviews with key individuals, including Brubeck's widow Iola and daughter Catherine, as well as interviews conducted with Brubeck himself prior to his passing in 2012, Crist paints a complete picture of the album's origins, creation, and legacy. Couching careful analysis of each of the album's seven tracks within historical and cultural contexts, he offers fascinating insights into the composition and development of some of the album's best-known tunes. From Brubeck's 1958 State Department-sponsored tour, during which he first encountered the Turkish aksak rhythms that would form the basis of "Blue Rondo à la Turk," to the backstage jam session that planted the seeds for "Take Five," Crist sheds an exciting new light on one of the most significant albums in jazz history.

Book The Quatrains and Selected Poems

Download or read book The Quatrains and Selected Poems written by V. Paul Hall and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Quatrains and Selected Poetry of V. Paul Hall is a volume of poetry dedicated to those people who enjoy reading poetry. Those people who enjoy the beautiful poetry of the old masters are more likely to enjoy this volume. It consists of some of the best of the works of the poet, though it is by no means a complete collection of his works. For those who desire a better understanding of the rhythms employed by the old masters of poetry, the forward is a tutorial on that subject. It also grapples with the subject of just what it is that makes poetry, a question, which has not yet been definitively answered. The poems are not obscure and hard to understand. It is the belief of the poet that, if the reader cannot understand the meaning of the poem, the poem probably has no meaning worthy of being sought. It has often been said that poetry should communicate emotion. In order to do this, it is essential to communicate as clearly, concisely, and beautifully as the poet's ability will permit. However, that communication needs to be conformed to the rhythmic rules of poetry. We may alter the rules by introducing new rhythms, but they must be rhythmic, not arhythmic.
