Book Sweet Release

Download or read book Sweet Release written by James Davison, Ph.D and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2010-06-03 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African Americans have come a long way in the difficult upward struggle from slavery to the relatively broad freedoms enjoyed today. Together, as a potent and well-knit group, they have battled endlessly in their march toward freedom. Finally, according to psychologist James Davison Jr., the last step to freedom for black Americans has arrived. But, that last step must be taken as individuals - not as a collective. In this assessment of the problems and potentials facing African Americans, Dr. Davison argues that in order for achieving individuals to advance to the final step of freedom, they must break free from the mental shackles created by the black community. The central theme of Sweet Release is that the forces that impinge most upon psychological freedom for black Americans come from within. Guilt for being successful, shame in reaction to the misbehaviors of race peers, demands to give back to the community, and accusations of trying to be white are just a few of the mechanisms that thwart psychological freedom for black persons. Dr. Davison argues that individual lifestyles, aspirations, even identities are constrained by the specter of racial unity. As a result, for black advancers, what remains to be overcome is not the system or them, but internalized community attitudes that put a choke hold on individual freedom. Unafraid of controversy or candid assessment, Dr. Davison addresses these and other thorny issues with psychological insight while offering strategies to move beyond group constrictions toward personal freedom.James Davison Jr., PhD (Sacramento, CA), is a psychologist in private practice and also works in the criminal justice system for the California State Prison system. In addition, he is the author of Prisoners of Our Past.

Book excerpt: Sometimes survival isn’t just about staying alive… Widowed and alone on the frontier, Elspeth Stewart will do whatever it takes to protect herself and her unborn child from the dangers of the wilderness and of men. Though her youthful beauty doesn’t show it, she is broken and scarred from the way men have treated her. So when a stranger wanders onto Bethie’s land, wounded and needing her aid, she takes no risks, tying him to the bed and hiding his weapons before ministering to his injuries. But Bethie’s defenses cannot keep Nicholas Kenleigh from breaking down her emotional walls. The scars on his body speak of a violent past, but his gentleness, warmth, and piercing eyes arouse longings in her that she never imagined she had. As Nicholas and Bethie reveal to each other both their hidden desires and their tortured secrets, they discover that riding the flames of their passion might be the key to burning away the nightmares of their pasts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Steven Gdula was growing up in western Pennsylvania, gobs were everywhere-at church bake sales and birthday parties, and even stacked by convenience store cash registers, sparkling in cellophane. Transplanted to California, Steven found himself dreaming of gobs: two rounds of moist cake joined by sweet, fluffy icing. The only way to satisfy his craving was to start baking them himself-but with a local spin, using seasonal ingredients and grown-up flavors. Once he perfected his recipes, Steven started selling his gobs from a cart on the streets of San Francisco. Calling his enterprise Gobba Gobba Hey (a nod to the Ramones), he was soon on his way to becoming something of a local food rock star. In Gobba Gobba Hey, Steven introduces readers, bakers, and eaters to the gob. These fifty-two recipes-one for every week of the year, from old-school chocolate and vanilla to matcha green tea with lemongrass ginger frosting-make it deliciously evident why gobs couldn't be kept a regional secret for long. Praise for The Warmest Room in the House (a Chicago Tribune Favorite Book of the Year) "[Gdula] serves up ... a delight, rich but restrained."-Atlantic "Literary comfort food-Very Short List "Vivid, funny and absorbing ...Warmhearted."-Dominique Browning, New York Times Book Review
