Book Touches of Sweet Harmony

Download or read book Touches of Sweet Harmony written by Jr. S. K. Heninger and published by . This book was released on 2013-06 with total page 470 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notion of a harmonious universe was taught by Pythagoras as early as the sixth century BC, and remained a basic premise in Western philosophy, science, and art almost to our own day. In Touches of Sweet Harmony, S. K. Heninger first recounts the legendary life of Pythagoras, describes his school at Croton, and discusses the materials from which the Renaissance drew its information about Pythagorean doctrine. The second section of the book reconstructs the many facets of this doctrine, and the final section shows its influence on Renaissance poetics. Professor Heninger's magisterial work introduces the reader not only to Pythagoras but to a host of other classical, medieval, and Renaissance figures as well--from Plato and Aristotle through St. Augustine and Macrobius down to Sidney and Spenser.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A lady desiring vengeance seeks a highwayman’s help in this tale by an author whose novels are “the gold standard in historical romance” (Lisa Kleypas). Lady Leigh Strachan’s father governed the town of Felchester—until a religious zealot murdered her family and turned the village into hell on Earth. Now, there is room in her heart for only one thing: revenge. Leigh plans to kill her father’s murderer once she learns to aim a pistol, slash a sword, and ride a horse. She seeks out the Prince of Midnight, a legendary highwayman exiled to France, as her choice of tutors. But the man she finds in a crumbling French castle is no hero. Half deaf and suffering from vertigo, S. T. Maitland can scarcely walk, much less wield a sword atop a dancing stallion. Yet for reasons she can’t explain, she remains with him, steeling her heart against the sight of his gold-streaked hair, green eyes, and brows adorned with a devilish curl at the arch . . . Women mean nothing but trouble to the highwayman, so he wishes Leigh were less alluring. Alas, she is beautiful, with a piercing gaze and a determined spirit. Despite his broken balance, the loss of his horse, and the price on his head, he vows to return to England with her. He cannot resist the challenge—or the chance to sacrifice everything for love . . . The New York Times–bestselling author of Flowers from the Storm and Shadowheart, Laura Kinsale writes an “unfailingly brilliant and beautiful” romance (Julia Quinn).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Merchant of Venice is best known for its complex and ambiguous portrait of the Jewish moneylender Shylock—and of European anti-Semitism. Fascinating in its engagement with prejudice, the play is also a comedy of cross-dressing and disguise, and a dramatic exploration of justice, mercy, and vengeance. This volume contains the full text of the play with explanatory footnotes and marginal glosses for contemporary readers. An extensive introduction and well-rounded selection of background materials not only illuminate anti-Semitism in early modern England but also provide context for other facets of the play, including its comic plot of love and marriage, its examination of commerce and international trade, and its themes of revenge and the law.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These writings come from a wonderful Air Force career where the opportunity to travel and view wonderful sites would be obtained in my assignments to Italy, Illinois, New Mexico, Washington, and Georgia. With my strong desire to discover the surrounding sweetness in many different travels, that would include some less traveled routes and some difficult places to reach in my walking adventures, I would enjoy the beauty of many different things, places, or events. Thus, through the prayerful connection with God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit, these writings would be inspired to be written by how I see beauty in my subject writings as I enjoy Christian fellowship. May our journey be sweet to include a harmony of sweetness when entering a house of worship. I hope and pray for these writings to be an inspiration and a zeal of beautiful love for all things in the guidance of the word of God. May your life be a blessing to others as you await the blessings of Heaven!

Book Literature and the Senses

Download or read book Literature and the Senses written by Annette Kern-Stähler and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-06 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 International licence. It is free to read at Oxford Academic and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations. Literature and the Senses critically probes the role of literature in capturing and scrutinizing sensory perception. Organized around the five traditional senses, followed by a section on multisensoriality, the collection facilitates a dialogue between scholars working on literature written from the Middle Ages to the present day. The contributors engage with a variety of theorists from Maurice Merleau-Ponty to Michel Serres to Jean-Luc Nancy to foreground the distinctive means by which literary texts engage with, open up, or make uncertain dominant views of the nature of perception. Considering the ways in which literary texts intersect with and diverge from scientific, epistemological, and philosophical perspectives, these essays explore a wide variety of literary moments of sensation including: the interspecies exchange of a look between a swan and a young Indigenous Australian girl; the sound of bees as captured in an early modern poem; the noxious smell of the 'Great Stink' that recurs in the Victorian novel; the taste of an eggplant registered in a poetic performance; tactile gestures in medieval romance; and the representation of a world in which the interdependence of human beings with the purple hibiscus plant is experienced through all five senses. The collection builds upon and breaks new ground in the field of sensory studies, focusing on what makes literature especially suitable to engaging with, contributing to, and challenging our perennial understandings of, the senses.
