Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most influential and acclaimed female vocalists of the twentieth century, Patsy Cline (1932–63) was best known for her rich tone and emotionally expressive voice. Born Virginia Patterson Hensley, she launched her musical career during the early 1950s as a young woman in Winchester, Virginia, and her heartfelt songs reflect her life and times in this community. A country music singer who enjoyed pop music crossover success, Cline embodied the power and appeal of women in country music, helping open the lucrative industry to future female solo artists. Bringing together noted authorities on Patsy Cline and country music, Sweet Dreams: The World of Patsy Cline examines the regional and national history that shaped Cline's career and the popular culture that she so profoundly influenced with her music. In detailed, deeply researched essays, contributors provide an account of Cline's early performance days in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley, analyze the politics of the split between pop and country music, and discuss her strategies for negotiating gender in relation to her public and private persona. Interpreting rich visual images, fan correspondence, publicity tactics, and community mores, this volume explores the rich and complex history of a woman whose music and image changed the shape of country music and American popular culture. Contributors are Beth Bailey, Mike Foreman, Douglas Gomery, George Hamilton IV, Warren R. Hofstra, Joli Jensen, Bill C. Malone, Kristine M. McCusker, and Jocelyn R. Neal.

  • Author : Daniel C. Dennett

Download or read book Sweet Dreams written by Daniel C. Dennett and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2006-09-08 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years since Daniel Dennett's influential Consciousness Explained was published in 1991, scientific research on consciousness has been a hotly contested battleground of rival theories—"so rambunctious," Dennett observes, "that several people are writing books just about the tumult." With Sweet Dreams, Dennett returns to the subject for "revision and renewal" of his theory of consciousness, taking into account major empirical advances in the field since 1991 as well as recent theoretical challenges. In Consciousness Explained, Dennett proposed to replace the ubiquitous but bankrupt Cartesian Theater model (which posits a privileged place in the brain where "it all comes together" for the magic show of consciousness) with the Multiple Drafts Model. Drawing on psychology, cognitive neuroscience, and artificial intelligence, he asserted that human consciousness is essentially the mental software that reorganizes the functional architecture of the brain. In Sweet Dreams, he recasts the Multiple Drafts Model as the "fame in the brain" model, as a background against which to examine the philosophical issues that "continue to bedevil the field." With his usual clarity and brio, Dennett enlivens his arguments with a variety of vivid examples. He isolates the "Zombic Hunch" that distorts much of the theorizing of both philosophers and scientists, and defends heterophenomenology, his "third-person" approach to the science of consciousness, against persistent misinterpretations and objections. The old challenge of Frank Jackson's thought experiment about Mary the color scientist is given a new rebuttal in the form of "RoboMary," while his discussion of a famous card trick, "The Tuned Deck," is designed to show that David Chalmers's Hard Problem is probably just a figment of theorists' misexploited imagination. In the final essay, the "intrinsic" nature of "qualia" is compared with the naively imagined "intrinsic value" of a dollar in "Consciousness—How Much is That in Real Money?"

Book excerpt: Grace is a registered nurse with moxie. To date, she’s survived a divorce, a mastectomy, and a Toni home perm. Two children and two exasperating dogs keep her busy when she’s not working in the recovery room at St. Erik’s hospital. One of Grace’s co-workers is a nurse anesthetist named Dakota Kohler. Dakota has his own history of adversity and his own health issue. Like millions of middle-aged men, he deals with erectile dysfunction. Dakota would love the chance to know Grace on a personal level. Just as their platonic relationship turns romantic, however, Grace and Dakota land in the middle of a wrongful death suit and allegations of child abuse. Together they must navigate issues of personal trust, legal challenges, and bodies that have – no pun toward Dakota – let them down. Often funny and always warm, Sweet Dreams is the story of grown-ups growing more.

Book Sweet Dreams in America

Download or read book Sweet Dreams in America written by Sharon D. Welch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to be an American during this time of ongoing challenges of race and sex discrimination, of violence and gross disparities in economic opportunity? And where are the activists who traditionally rallied against the ills of America--the democrats, progressives and leftists--to seize upon these enemies? In Sweet Dreams in America, Sharon Welch charts a way for people in power to inspire others and themselves, even if the goals of a gradually improving society and of achieving social justice seem illusory. The author links political work to spirituality, showing how we can channel the sense of being connected to forces outside ourselves to a larger good.

Book excerpt: BIG THINGS HAVE SMALL BEGINNINGS AND INNOCENT THOUGHTS CAN LEAD TO TROUBLE In this opening volume of the series When Giants Break the Spell, Old Bill ruminates about the funeral of a police dog, and slides into a sweet dream. He has the forest mind of the European, treasuring the mystery of the dense forest, the charm of free-roaming animals, green plains stretching to horizon hills, and the cool spacious lands of the West. He and Philip contemplate about like matters: birdwatching, crossword puzzles, book clubs and murder mystery evenings --- nuggets in the Caucasian way of life. Shahedul Islam laments that if white people disappear, he will no longer see men and women creating true science fiction, walking in fantasy costumes to a fancy dress party, and reveling in Dracula and Frankenstein. Fun, fantasy, imagination and Nature love. They form a question: Why is that in the eyes of the media, the social regime and the 'liberals,' the white race alone is guilty, worthless, dispensable, soon to vanish gently into that good night in "the new demographic"? Innocent thoughts? The ruthless operatives of the Scorpion, the 'dirty tricks' outfit of the Sneak Rulers and Mind Masters, do not think so. And neither does Task Force Cobra, hurriedly formed by the Government of Canada. Because behind these characters there loom shadowy figures. Richard Hall has struck at the very heart of the powers that be, and is determined to do better this time around. Professor Ames Wesley has dared to make The Speech. Khaled, the Dubai millionaire, is financing Richard. Have these people teamed up with Middle Eastern resistance fighters? Perhaps they will. All of them hate the New World Order. Shane Douglas loves the children of his people, and wants to see more generations of them. That makes him a dangerous radical in the eyes of the Sneak Rulers, and a hateful 'white supremacist' in the mind of his liberal ex-wife. He is captured by the Scorpion. They torture him, but he finds escape in a mental journey, and undertakes the first-ever exploration of the mythic in the soul of man. A secret mini-war begins on both sides of the US-Canada border. It is a battle of the mind against the Mind Masters and Sneak Rulers, and a battle of wits and bodies against their spies, informants, killers, sympathizers and dupes. Some see it as a war for the existence of their people. Others simply want an end to the New World Order, its warmongering, its globalization and its destruction of their nation-state --- the destruction of their way of life. All of them are common folks. But perhaps some of their friends are not all that friendly. Moral Courage vs Genocide, Idealists vs Mind Masters, valor in the face of police state repression. Will the Sneak Rulers extinguish this spark of resistance, or can a few ordinary folks strike a blow to break the spell and wake the sleeping giant? Read Sweet Dreams and Terror Cells, and join the struggle against the greatest crime in history. Stand and be counted in the rising, the resistance that is only now taking seed, and the massive, glorious renaissance that is to come. Everything depends upon it, everything.
