Download or read book Mountains Figured and Disfigured in the English Speaking World written by Françoise Besson and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-06-01 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this book, written by poets, novelists, mountain-climbers and academics from all over the world, evoke the representation of mountains in the English-speaking world as artists, writers, philosophers or mountain-climbers have represented them from the sixteenth to the twenty-first centuries. From the Alps to the Pyrenees, from Mount Fuji to Mount Shasta, from the Himalayas to the Scottish Highlands, from Ikere in Nigeria to Devil's Tower in the United States, from Uluru in Australia to the most northern mountain of the Arctic, the shapes of the world speak the same language and tell the world its own story. This interdisciplinary book, weaving together mountaineering, literature, philosophy, painting, cinema, ecology, history, palaeontology, geography, geopolitics, toponymy, law, religion and myth, invites people to an innovative reading of mountains: it reveals the close relationship existing between the shapes of the world and all forms of writing and, at the same time, it shows how the representations of the imagination may be instrumental in protecting the natural world. The story told by the landscape inscribes a broken line in the shapes of the world, tearing the landscape like a fragile page whenever historical and political events (wars, mining or deforestation) leave scars in the landscape; but writers' and artists' representations of mountains constitute a path to awareness as they are not only a painting of beauty, but an image of our link to nature and a warning as well. For centuries the image of the mountain has conveyed a symbolism telling the story of human thought, and this book shows to what extent literature and art play an essential part in our awareness of nature.
Download or read book The Dragonfly and the Prince written by Josephyna Ries and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-01-14 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During that evening, Prince Demetrjusz decided to take a walk. Roald had insisted on accompanying him, and Kenechukwa followed at a distance. During the brisk walk that Demetrjusz took, he had tried to lose himself in the city. There were several shops open, and he looked idly into the windows, until he saw a flash of silver. Pausing, Demetrjusz looked a little closer into a shop window. With surprise, Demetrjusz saw a tiny woman standing before a display of brightly colored fabric. Her hair was white with a frame of black. Only one other person the prince had ever seen had that unique color pattern or diminutive stature—that of the figure skater from the previous charity performance. The prince’s sensitive ears picked up every syllable that the tiny beauty said. “Stefanie, if you could use this in the costume you are sewing for me. I have to get back before my curfew is up.” Stefanie said, “Domino, you can stay in my spare room. You don’t have to stay at the institute anymore. You will be twenty-one in a couple of days.” Demetrjusz sucked in a deep breath. This was Domino, the woman that had plagued his thoughts all day. The prince continued to listen as Domino said, “Dominique, please call me Dominique. I can’t today. I have another event for the institute tomorrow night, and then I will be unemployed.” Demetrjusz was in too deep of thought to notice that the woman that had infatuated him all day was saying her goodbyes. Dominique rushed out the door and straight into the immovable body of the prince. Demetrjusz gently steadied her little body with his hands, holding Dominique a little too long. Dominique looked up at Demetrjusz, her Kelly green eyes snapping their disapproval as she said, “Excuse me, sir.” Dominique felt extremely annoyed at the tall, very handsome stranger who was holding her. Dominique raised her eyebrow at him when he did not release her and moved to the side. Prince Demetrjusz realized that he was breaking a cultural norm and apologized. Reluctantly, he released the little performer. And before Demetrjusz could stop Dominique, she had hopped on a public bus and was gone. Demetrjusz could still smell Dominique’s intoxicating fragrance of peppermint and lavender as he watched the public transportation carry away the elusive female. Roald and Kenechukwa walked up to the prince. Roald inquired, “Did you know that young woman, Your Highness?” Demetrjusz answered as he stared at the bus driving away, “No, but I will.” Turning to his friends, he said, “Most definitely, I will.” The other two men looked at each other and shrugged their shoulders.
Download or read book Jazz on the Road written by Christopher Wilkinson and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2001-10-30 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christopher Wilkinson uncovers a fascinating and unexplored side of American musical and social history in this richly detailed account of Don Albert's musical career and the multicultural forces that influenced it. Albert was born Albert Dominque in New Orleans in 1908. Wilkinson discusses his musical education in the Creole community of New Orleans and the fusion of New Orleans jazz and the Texas blues styles in the later 1920s during his tenure with Troy Floyd's Orchestra of Gold. He documents the founding of Albert's own band in San Antonio, its tours through twenty-four states during the 1930s, its recordings, and its significant reputation within the African American community. In addition to providing a vivid account of life on the road and imparting new insight into the daily existence of working musicians, this book illustrates how the fundamental issue of race influenced Albert's life, as well as the music of the era. Albert's years as a San Antonio nightclub owner in the 1940s and 1950s saw the rise in popularity of rhythm and blues and the decline of interest in jazz. There was also increasing racial animosity, which Albert resisted by the successful legal defense of his right to operate an integrated establishment in 1951. In the two decades before his death in 1980, his performances in Dixieland jazz bands and interviews with oral historians concerning his own career were the fitting climax to a multifaceted musical life. Albert's voice and personality, his feelings and opinions about the music he loved, and the obstacles he faced in performing and promoting it, are artfully conveyed in Wilkinson's fluid, accessible, and erudite narrative. Jazz on the Road shows the importance of live performance in bringing jazz to America, and succeeds brilliantly in depicting an era, a locale, and a way of life.
