Book Sweet Clover for Nitrate Production Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sweet Clover for Nitrate Production Classic Reprint written by Albert Lemuel Whiting and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sweet Clover for Nitrate Production Sweet clover offers the most promising indications that the problem of supplying a cheap source of nitrate nitrogen for farm crops can be solved. With the exception of manure, the animal sources of nitrogen, such as tankage, dried blood, fish meal, guano, and others, are limited in quantity, and their price is such that to use any of them except manure, as a source of nitrogen for crop growth, is out of the question. The chemicals, Chili saltpeter or sodium nitrate, calcium nitrate, ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulfate, ammonium phosphate, calcium cyanamid, and others are likewise too expensive to apply to soils on which staple crops are to be grown. The need for special studies to determine the value of sweet clover (melilotus alba, sometimes called bee clover) for nitrate production, when employed as a green manure, was made apparent by the pre liminary studies made in 1917 on the University North Farm, at Urbana. Consequently extended investigations were conducted dur ing the season of 1919 on certain of the outlying experiment fields in addition to continuing those already initiated at Urbana. Book Annual White Sweet Clover and Strains of the Biennial Form 1921 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Annual White Sweet Clover and Strains of the Biennial Form 1921 Classic Reprint written by Adrian J. Pieters and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual White Sweet Clover and Strains of the Biennial Form, 1921 This variety differs from the biennial form in its more rapid growth and maturity. Crown buds are not developed, but the plant dies after producing seed. When two or more crown buds develop on a biennial the habit of the plant when in seed is distinct from that of a seed-bearing annual, but when only one crown bud develops the biennial and the annual seed-bearing plants can not be distinguished with certainty. The seeds of the annual are like those of the biennial form; they can not be distinguished. Seed is still scarce, some having been grown from the Iowa strain and some harvested from wild plants in Alabama. Book Sweetclover Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sweetclover Classic Reprint written by Eugene Amos Hollowell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sweetclover Lime provides available calcium, which is one of the elements sweetclover needs and which is generally lacking in soils of the humid States. Undoubtedly this is one reason sweetclover has made greater advances west of the Mississippi River than in the East. Soils low in calcium are commonly called sour or acid soils, and unless lime in one form or another is applied, efforts to get good stands and growth of sweetclover are wasted. Applications of from 1 to 4 tons of ground limestone per acre are generally made, depending on the degree of acidity. On many moderately acid soils, however, the use of 300 to 700 pounds per acre of finely ground limestone (of which 75 percent will pass through a sieve with 100 meshes to the inch) mixed and drilled with the seed has given good stands of sweetclover. Lime may also be applied by broadcasting on the surface. For best results the lime should be worked into the seedbed. Many farmers follow the practice of applying limestone before plowing. The subsequent disk ing and harrowing tend to distribute it through the topsoil, though with deep plowing it may be placed too deep to be most effective. Book Sweet Clover Utilization

Download or read book Sweet Clover Utilization written by H. S. Coe and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-11-05 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bulletin discusses only the use of sweet clover, which may be utilized for feeding purposes, such as pasturage, hay, or ensilage. With the possible exception of alfalfa on fertile soil, sweet clover, when properly handled, will furnish as much nutritious pasturage from early spring until late fall as any other legume. It seldom causes bloat. As cattle crave dry roughage when pasturing on sweet clover, they should have access to it. Straw answers this purpose very well. Sweet clover has proved to be a profitable soil-improving crop. The large, deep roots add much humus to the soil and improve the aeration and drainage. As a rule, the yield of crops following sweet clover is increased materially. Being a biennial, this crop lends itself readily to short rotations. Sweet clover is a valuable honey plant, in that in all sections of the country it secretes an abundance of nectar.
