Book Extramural English in Teaching and Learning

Download or read book Extramural English in Teaching and Learning written by Pia Sundqvist and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-09 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is unique in bringing together theory, research, and practice about English encountered outside the classroom – extramural English – and how it affects teaching and learning. The book investigates ways in which learners successfully develop their language skills through extramural English and provides tools for teachers to make use of free time activities in primary and secondary education. The authors demonstrate that learning from involvement in extramural English activities tends to be incidental and is currently underutilized in classroom work. A distinctive strength is that this volume is grounded in theory, builds on results from empirical studies, and manages to link theory and research with practice in a reader-friendly way. Teacher-educators, teachers and researchers of English as a foreign language and teachers of English as a second language across the globe will find this book useful in developing their use of extramural English activities as tools for language learning.

Book Perspectives on Foreign Language Policy

Download or read book Perspectives on Foreign Language Policy written by Theo Bongaerts and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1997-05-07 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, containing fourteen invited papers on foreign-language policy, starts off with a brief history of foreign-language teaching policy in the Netherlands. This historical outline is followed by four contributions of authors who once developed the Dutch National Action Programme (NAP) on Foreign Languages under the directorship of Theo van Els. The second section consists of five contributions written by experts from Germany, Israel, Finland and the United States, who reflect on the language policies adopted in their countries and on the international impact of the ideas developed in the NAP. The final section of the book presents four contributions from Dutch authors, all focussing on language policy issues related to the respective roles of Dutch as a second language, and of ethnic-minority languages in the Netherlands. The contributions to this volume were written by friends and colleagues of Theo van Els, in recognition of his considerable contributions to that area of applied linguistics which has captured his fascination for many years: foreign-language teaching policy.

Book Working Together for Integration Skills and Labour Market Integration of Immigrants and their Children in Iceland

Download or read book Working Together for Integration Skills and Labour Market Integration of Immigrants and their Children in Iceland written by OECD and published by OECD Publishing. This book was released on 2024-09-04 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relative to its population, Iceland experienced the largest inflow of immigrants over the past decade of any OECD country. Four out of five immigrants in Iceland have come from EU and EFTA countries, although there has been a recent increase in humanitarian arrivals. Employment rates are the highest in the OECD, for both men and women, reflecting the recent and labour market oriented nature of most immigration to Iceland. However, immigrants’ skills are often not well used, as witnessed by the high rate of formal overqualification. What is more, immigrants’ language skills are poor in international comparison and there is evidence of growing settlement of immigrants. Against this backdrop, Iceland is at a turning point in its integration framework, and seeks to develop a comprehensive integration policy for the first time. This review, the fifth in the series Working Together for Integration, provides an in depth analysis of the Icelandic integration system, highlighting its strengths, weaknesses, and potential areas for improvement. Earlier reviews in this series looked at integration in Sweden (2016), Finland (2018), Norway (2022) and Flanders (2023).
