Despite its rotund appearance, from which its name derives, the SAAB 29 was a fast and agile aircraft for its era. It served effectively in both fighter and fighter-bomber roles into the 1970s. Book excerpt: During the second half of World War II, Sweden began to provide confidential assistance to its two neighbours, Norway and Denmark. This aid was in the form of so-called police camps, where refugees from these two German occupied countries could gather and prepare for a return to their homelands, when the Germans were expected to give up. In the home countries, these police forces were to restore order in society, and this motivation from neutral Sweden was tolerated by the Germans. But as time went on, the character changed from being police forces to becoming more and more regular military troops, although with simple weapons. The so-called Danish Brigade eventually consisted of nearly 5,000 Danish refugees, who were placed in various camps around Sweden. Among these Danish refugees, were slightly more than a dozen Danish pilots, who were secretly placed in pairs on different Swedish airbases. They eventually gained access to Sweden's foremost military aircraft, namely the Saab B17 dive-bomber. In the last days of the war, these pilots gathered at the F7 Såtenäs airbase on the shores of Lake Vänern, where they formed the Danish Brigade's Air Unit. Its main purpose was to support the Danish Brigade's return to Denmark. One of these pilots was the author's father, Lieutenant Carlo Hjalmar Sandqvist. Carlo is the "Pilot in the Danish Brigade in Sweden during the Second World War." This book presents inside views of the Danish resistance movement and German concentration camps in Denmark during World War II, and a dramatic escape. It describes the Danish Brigade in Sweden - a secret organization in which Sweden trained up to 5,000 Danish refugees as "police troops", eventually a paramilitary organization. It also presents the secret Swedish military plan for "Saving Denmark" in the last year of the war.

Book excerpt: The German assault on Denmark and Norway in April 1940 effectively cut off all surface communications between neutral Sweden and the Western Allies. Diplomats and VIPs still needed to travel to and from Sweden and exports and imports of highly valuable goods needed to be maintained. To gain support for the war against an all-conquering Germany, it was also important to give the Swedish public the opportunity to read British newspapers and magazines. The only realistic way to maintain these links between Sweden and Britain was by air, and a civilian service was immediately established by BOAC. This book covers the history of the flights and the aircraft used. It also has details of the markings and color schemes throughout the war, illustrated with many rare wartime photos and color profiles by the author of all the aircraft types. The BOAC link between Sweden and Britain originally operated by Lockheed Super Electras. Throughout the war, a variety of aircraft would also operate the service, including Hudson, Lodestar, Whitley, Dakota, Liberator and of course the Mosquito, all being demilitarized as the Swedes did not allow armed aircraft to operate on their airfields. From the Norwegian perspective, and helping the allied war effort, the thousands of young Norwegians who fled to Sweden were keen to join the Allied fight against the Nazis. Unhappy with the lack of capacity provided by BOAC, a Norwegian transport unit was established, operating as a detachment of BOAC set up with the focus on carrying people. Keen to keep up exports and allowing Swedish nationals the freedom to travel, Swedish airline AB Aerotransport established their own service to Britain in 1942 with DC-3s, and later B-17s converted to carry passengers and cargo. From 1944, the USAAF Air Transport Command established their service to fly out Norwegian refugees and to return interned bomber crews, operating civilian registered CB-24, C-87 and C-54. "The Stockholm Run" book by Nils Mathisrud was awarded the best Swedish aviation book of the year, 2017.

Designed with the Cold War situation in mind, the Draken was specially tailored to Sweden's needs. Several versions of the aircraft were developed to undertake a wide range of tasks. The J 35A, J 35 B, J 35D, J 35F, and J 35J were fighter versions, with the J 35J staying in service with the Flygvapnet (Swedish Air Force) until 1998. The innovative, tailless, double-delta design of the Draken proved to be amazingly successful and ushered in a whole line of more sophisticated successors. The aircraft was exported to Finland, Denmark, and Austria, where the last J 35D was retired in 2005.
