Book Managing Multilingualism in a European Nation state

Download or read book Managing Multilingualism in a European Nation state written by Sally Boyd and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2001 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text analyzes recent shifts in Swedish language policy. Special focus is given to the complex relationships of the Swedish language to both English and to indigenous and immigrant minority languages in Sweden. Key issues addressed include the current debate concerning Sweden's official majority and minority languages; the position of immigrant and indigenous languages in the Swedish school system, the influence of the spread of English on the use of Swedish, particularly in writing; and the role of Swedish within the European Union. The contributions synthesize research on the status of languages currently used in Sweden as well as policy initiatives, and taken together the papers accurately present the many sides of the complex debate taking place there. While this book focuses on one country's struggle for multilingualism, the issues presented here are highly relevant and accessible to all readers interested in linguistic rights and language policy.

Book Language in the Process of Cultural Assimilation and Structural Incorporation of Linguistic Minorities

Download or read book Language in the Process of Cultural Assimilation and Structural Incorporation of Linguistic Minorities written by Tove Skutnabb-Kangas and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semilingualism is discussed as a sociolinguistic concept and is viewed as a mediating variable when the society reproduces the class structure and vocational structure of suppressed minorities. A Finnish group of immigrant children in Sweden is the minority considered. It was found that the longer the Finnish children were educated in Finnish, the better their academic achievement in courses taught in Swedish. It was also found that children given no instruction in their mother tongue gradually lost competence in Finnish, without gaining full native-level competence in Swedish. This produced a subtractive bilingualism or semibilingualism, which hampered students' academic achievement. It is hypothesized that depriving students who come from a socially subordinated culture of instruction in their native language before the age of 10 may interfere with their cognitive development. The findings strongly support the case for extended bilingual education, and are relevant to those concerned with equality of educational opportunity for minority language children. (SW)

This book was released on 2020-11-17 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book discusses recycled discourses of language and nationalism in Finnish higher education, demonstrating the need to look beyond language in the study of language policies of higher education. It analyses the historical and political layeredness of language policies as well as the intertwined nature of national and international developments in understanding new nationalism. Finnish higher education language policies were fuelled by the dynamics and tensions between the national languages Finnish and Swedish until the 2000s, when English begins to catalyse post nationalist discourses of economy and competitiveness. In the 2010s, English begins to be seen as a threat to Finnish. Educational, economic and epistemic nationalism emerge as the main cycles of new nationalist language policies in Finnish higher education. Book 21st Century Pre school Bilingual Education

Download or read book 21st Century Pre school Bilingual Education written by Mila Schwartz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-28 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, the editors aim to offer a timely focus on preschool bilingual education in the 21st century by drawing attention to the following trends: (1) the diversity of language models and their hybrid, dynamic and flexible nature; (2) the complexities of children's linguistic backgrounds; (3) children's, parents' and teachers' agencies in interaction; and (4) early bilingual development and education as contextually embedded. Given the complexity of providing a global and comprehensive view of these trends in just one issue, the selection of studies included here seeks to offer insightful consideration of these trends using a range of qualitative and quantitative methods. The contributors explore the trends in different socio-cultural and national contexts in five countries: Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Israel and Singapore. The book highlights the need on the one hand to examine early bilingual education within specific socio-cultural contexts, and on the other to search for its universal features. It aims to promote the field of preschool bilingual education as a unique research domain by illustrating its distinctiveness. Last but not least, the studies presented here have a significant contribution to make in the light of the growing interest of policy-makers, ethno-linguistic community leaders, practitioners and researchers in early bilingual development and education. This book was originally published as a special issue of International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism.
