Book I Flew For MMA

Download or read book I Flew For MMA written by Reg Adkins and published by Reg Adkins. This book was released on 2020-08-26 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reg Adkins was born in Perth, Western Australia in 1926, went to Inglewood State School and after three years at Guildford Grammar School completed his education at the age of 16. From the time he was 11 years old his ambition was to be a pilot. Joining the RAAF in October 1944 he was too late for pilot training but spent four and a half years as an Armourer in the service he loved. Learning to fly at the Royal Aero Club of W.A. at Maylands Aerodrome in 1948 was the first step up the ladder towards achieving his ambition. Following an instructor rating and employment at the club for eighteen months he was well on his way when he stepped out of a Tiger Moth into a DC-3 to become one of the first post-war Aero Club trained pilots to be accepted into the airlines. In 1955 he joined MacRobertson Miller Airlines. After a career spanning 33 years, flying DC-3s, F.27s and F.28s all over W.A. and the Northern Territory and amassing a total of 21,000 hours he retired in 1986 at the top of the ladder as Senior Captain. To use his own words, “How could anyone have been so lucky?” I Flew For MMA is a rollicking story covering the massive change in Western Australia’s aviation history, from the days of post-World War Two flying unpressurised piston-engined DC-3s with virtually no navigation aids and the most basic of equipment and accommodation to the introduction of the comfortable and fast F.27 turboprop, then to the magical jet era and the state of the art F.28. Reg and his colleagues really were the trail-blazers of post-war flying up to the modern age. But I Flew For MMA is more than just a terrific historical record of flying in W.A. and the N.T. It lays bare the highs and the lows of being an airline pilot. The personalities, the family aspects, the industrial battles, and the emotional trials and tribulations that go with being responsible for the lives of the passengers in sometimes trying and stressful conditions, all the while being mindful of the desire to “get the job done”.

  • Author : Robert P. Neilson
  • Publisher : AuthorHouse
  • Release : 2016-09-15
  • ISBN : 1524618004
  • Pages : 833 pages

Download or read book A Bomber Pilot S Story written by Robert P. Neilson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 833 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flying a B-17 Flying Fortress with the Fifteenth Air Force out of Foggia, Italy, Lt. George H. Neilson describes the harrowing experiences of his twenty-eight combat missions as well as the ups and downs of life in the US Army Air Corps from enlistment to discharge (194345). Blending selections of his fathers letters to home and memoirs he recorded a half century later with documented background history, the younger Neilson tells the saga of the son of a Boston widow as he confronts the rigors of pilot-officer training and combat service in the Mediterranean Theater of Operations during the final six months of World War II in Europe. George depicts the humorous and mundane sides of army life as well as the terror-filled moments during bomb runs over targets in Austria, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Yugoslavia, and Austria as antiaircraft flak bursts battered the aircraft. Neilsons daily chronicles juxtapose moments when life and death hung in the balance, such as when he landed his crippled Fort in the Adriatic Sea, with the unexpected moments of splendor, such as when he dined in luxury on the Isle of Capri at a castle owned by the royal family of Italy. Flying in formation through clouds so thick that the plane thirty feet off his wing was invisible, George received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his ability as a skilled instrument pilot. He recounts youthful escapades on duty-free hours and the tales of life in Foggias mud-bound tent city in the spur of Italy. It includes the stirring story of his visit to a field hospital where his brother, a captain in the infantry, was recovering from a bullet wound incurred in the fighting in the Apennine Mountain campaign. Finally, the story tells of World War IIs fiery end and how he unknowingly worked on the secret research project to develop the atomic bomb in a lab at MIT before enlistment. For the student of history and aviation and its role in the Allied victory over Hitlers nefarious Reich, this microhistory will not disappoint.

Beginning with first-hand accounts of the reaction to Chamberlain's declaration of war in 1939, Kershaw portrays the many aspects of war through the words of those who were there, from the sailors of the little ships of Dunkirk to German soldiers preparing for Operation 'Sea Lion'. He takes us from the nightly horrors of the Blitz to battles in the limitless desert of North Africa, and from jungle war in Burma to Lancaster bombers over Germany and the beaches of Normandy. Featuring new interviews with veterans and civilians from Britain, the Commonwealth and Germany as well as diaries, letters, and first-hand accounts, this is a testimony to the remarkable men and women who lived through the Second World War -- whose refusal to surrender changed them, and Britain, forever.
