Download or read book International Dictionary of Library Histories written by David H. Stam and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2001-11 with total page 1086 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the format of Fitzroy Dearborn's highly successful International Dictionary of Historic Places and International Dictionary of University Histories, the International Dictionary of Library Histories provides basic information for each institution - location and holdings - followed by an extensive (1,000-5,000 word) essay on its history as well as a Further Reading list. In addition, the dictionary includes introductory articles on the history of various types of libraries and a library history in various regions of the world. The dictionary profiles more than 200 institutions from around the world, including the world's most important research libraries and other libraries with globally or regionally notable collections, innovative traditions, and significant and interesting histories. The essays take advantage of the growing scholarship of library history to provide insightful overviews of each institution, including not only the traditional values of these libraries but their innovations as well, such as developments in automated systems and electronic delivery. The profiles will emphasize the unique materials of research in these institutions - archives, manuscripts, personal and institutional papers. The introductory articles on types of libraries include topics ranging from theological libraries to prison libraries, from the ancient to the digital. An international team of more than 200 leading scholars in the field have contributed essays to the project.

Download or read book Handbook of Research on Protecting and Managing Global Indigenous Knowledge Systems written by Tshifhumulo, Rendani and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-10-08 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indigenous knowledge systems (IKS) are a combination of knowledge systems encompassing technology; social, economic, and philosophical learning; or educational, legal, and governance systems. The lack of documentation of these systems presents a problem as the knowledge is fading away over time. In response, it is essential that policies and strategies are undertaken to ensure that these systems are protected and sustained for generations to come. The Handbook of Research on Protecting and Managing Global Indigenous Knowledge Systems is a comprehensive reference source that works to preserve indigenous knowledge systems through research. Focusing on key concepts such as tools of indigenous knowledge management and African indigenous symbols, the book preserves and promotes indigenous knowledge through research and fills the void staff and students within the field of indigenous knowledge systems face with the current lack of research and resources. This book is ideal for university students, lecturers, researchers, academicians, policymakers, historians, sociologists, and anyone interested in the field of indigenous knowledge systems.
Download or read book World Guide to Abbreviations of Organizations written by F. A. Buttress and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 882 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of well over 50,000 entries not only updates its predecessor but considerably increases the coverage of Latin America and Eastern Europe. I have been aided in this work by two colleagues at Glasgow University Library, Dr Lloyd Davies and Barbara MacMillan, and in general revision by Kate Richard. Close on 20% of the text has been altered. The equivalences, introduced into the last edition, linking acronyms in different languages for the same organization, have been extended. New to this edition is the cross-referencing between a defunct organization and its successor. Otherwise the policies adopted in previous editions have been retained: strictly local organizations are omitted, but the subject scope includes activities of all kinds; the country of origin of a national organization is given in brackets, unless it is the home country of the title language or can be readily deduced from the title itself. Acronyms of parent bodies of subsidiary organizations are also added in brackets. A select bibliography guides the reader to specialist works providing more detailed information. Particularly at a time of such widespread political change affecting organizational structures in so many countries, it is impossible to ensure complete up-to-date accuracy in a work of this kind. Readers are earnestly invited to inform me of any errors and omissions for attention in a later edition of this work. H. H. Bibliography Acronyms, Initialisms and Abbreviations Dictionary. 13th edn. Download or read book Buttress s World Guide to Abbreviations of Organizations written by L. Pitman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The previous edition of this directory extended its coverage of the Far East, Australasia and Latin America, areas previously under-represented. For this new edition emphasis has been given to increasing the number of entries for organizations from Britain, the United States and Australia, and particular attention has been paid to new political organizations in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. The number of entries included has gone up to over 68,000 of which over 9,000 are new or amended. Cross-references from defunct organizations in the previous edition have been deleted, and references (indicated by ex and now) added for organizations which have changed their name since the previous edition. As before, the range of organizations included is broad and only purely local organizations have been excluded. This directory therefore lists official and unofficial organizations, national and international, on all SUbjects: political, economic and social. Acronyms of parent bodies of subsidiary organizations are given where appropriate and equivalencies are used to link acronyms in different languages for the same organization. Further information about the organizations listed can be found in the sources listed in the bibliography. I would like to thank Henry Heaney and Graeme Mackintosh for their advice, and David Grinyer for his technical support. L. M. Pitman Bibliography Adams, R. (ed.) Download or read book The Librarian s Companion written by Vladimir Wertsman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1996-10-30 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this work, which was included in Eugene Sheehy's Guide to Reference Books (10th ed.), became an indispensable snapshot of the state of librarianship and publishing around the world. This revised edition, an update and expansion of the original volume, offers almost 1,000 entries compared to the 644 entries of the first edition. Included are entries detailing the book trade in individual countries, biographical profiles, quotations about books and librarianship, and representations of book people in fiction and postage stamps. This revised edition also provides much new information on topics such as Latin terminology, job search strategies, and awards and grants. The heart of the volume is an alphabetical listing of countries from around the world. Each entry provides valuable data about the political and economic condition of the country, illiteracy rate, and ratio of library holdings to inhabitants. More specific information is then provided about the number of libraries and their holdings, the number of publishers, and the number of books and newspapers published per year. Libraries of special note are indicated. The rest of the volume contains fascinating information on quotations about books and librarians, biographical sketches of book people, and representations of book-related topics in creative works. This new edition also provides a guide to Latin terms used in the book world, information on job search strategies for librarians, library awards and grants, and helpful advice for librarians and supervisors.
