Book Swansea in the Great War

Download or read book Swansea in the Great War written by Bernard Lewis and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2014-10-30 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great War left an indelible mark on almost every town and village in Britain and this extensively researched book looks in detail at how that war affected the town of Swansea and its people.??Themes covered in the book include recruitment and the treatment of conscientious objectors, how Belgian refugees were cared for, and what happened to foreign nationals who were living in Swansea at the outbreak of war. How the war affected the trade of the town, especially the docks, is examined, as well as the fate of numerous Swansea ships that became targets for the German U-Boat campaign. The organisation of medical aid for wounded servicemen and the effect of food shortages, and its subsequent rationing in Swansea, are covered. The new roles performed by women and the efforts made in the town to provide support for those left at home, or serving at the front, are also examined. ??Away from the Home Front, the actions of both of the Swansea Victoria Cross winners are recounted, as are the stories of some of those who served on land, on sea, or in the air. These include a Swansea airman who was downed by the famous Red Baron, another who flew again after losing a leg in combat, a Swansea sailor who was lost in an encounter with a German U-Boat, the Swansea officer who twice escaped from a POW camp, and several former Swansea men who returned with Canadian, Australian or South African units to fight the common foe, with often tragic results. There are also stories of a Swansea nurse captured by the Austrians in Serbia, and a Swansea doctor at Gallipoli.??Swansea in the Great War is a welcome and long overdue look at how the Great War affected the town and its people. ??How did the experience of war affect Swansea and the surrounding area? - From the initial enthusiasm, to the gradual realization of the enormity of human sacrifice the families of Swansea were committed to as the war stretched out over the next four years. A record of the growing disillusion of the people, their tragedies and hardships and a determination to see it through. ??The Great War affected everyone. At home there were wounded soldiers in military hospitals, refugees from Belgium and later on German prisoners of war. There were food and fuel shortages and disruption to schooling. The role of women changed dramatically and they undertook a variety of work undreamed of in peacetime. Extracts from contemporary letters reveal their heroism and give insights into what it was like under battle conditions, including the disastrous first day at the Somme for the Swansea Pals.

Book The Quest for the Holy Grail of Graig Trewyddfa Swansea

Download or read book The Quest for the Holy Grail of Graig Trewyddfa Swansea written by John Peter Thomas and published by novum pro Verlag. This book was released on 2020-08-21 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over about 200 years, up until the 1930s, the open valley of the River Tawe became one of the most heavily industrialised areas of the developed world. The 'Holy Grail' which lay beneath the lands of Graig Trewyddfa, in Swansea, locally known as the 'Great Penvilia Five Foot Vein', was renowned for its quality; smelting metals, at the time, required more than three parts of coal to every one of metal ore, so this was of major economic benefit. Mining the Penvilian coal brought about its own problems - use of child labour, serious accidents, flooding and explosions. It became apparent in the mid-1880s that it was cheaper to smelt ores at the source, rather than ship them to Swansea; this led to the gradual cessation of copper smelting and closing of most coal mines in the Swansea area.

Book Industrial South Wales 1750 1914

Download or read book Industrial South Wales 1750 1914 written by W.E Minchinton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Wales was one of the main centres of the Industrial Revolution in Britain but the story of the rapid growth of an industrial society there has not yet been fully told, since much of the work done has consisted of articles rather than books. This volume brings together a selection of important contributions hitherto only accessible in a large number of scattered periodicals. These articles have been selected to present a considered sequence and are preceded by an introduction which puts the story of the industrialization of Wales into perspective. They deal firstly with the problems of population and migration then with the basic industries of iron, coal, tinplate and copper. These are followed by essays on banking, and the volume concludes with contributions on trade unionism and building. This is by no means merely the story of regional development since the book has a wider appeal; a number of the articles are concerned with the links with America and with the place of Wales in the Atlantic economy. Amongst the authors are the late Sir Lewis Namier and some of the leading writers on the history of modern Wales including Brinley Thomas and A. H. Dodd.
