Book excerpt: "A lifelong acolyte of the natural world, Annie Proulx brings her witness and research to the subject of wetlands and the vitally important role they play in preserving the environment-by storing the carbon emissions that accelerate climate change. Fens, bogs, swamps, and marine estuaries are crucial to the earth's survival, and in four illuminating parts, Proulx documents their systemic destruction in pursuit of profit. In a vivid and revelatory journey through history, Proulx describes the fens of 16th-century England, Canada's Hudson Bay lowlands, Russia's Great Vasyugan Mire, and America's Okeefenokee National Wildlife Refuge. She introduces the early explorers who launched the destruction of the Amazon rainforest, and writes of the diseases spawned in the wetlands-the Ague, malaria, Marsh Fever. A sobering look at the degradation of wetlands over centuries and the serious ecological consequences, this is "an unforgettable and unflinching tour of past and present, fixed on a subject that could not be more important" (Bill McKibben)"--

Book The Slave in the Swamp

Download or read book The Slave in the Swamp written by William Tynes Cowa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2005. In 19th century plantation literature, the runaway slave in the swamp was a recurring bogey-man whose presence challenged myths of the plantation system. By escaping to the swamps with its wild and threatening connotations, the runaway gained an invisibility that was more threatening to the institution than open rebellion. In part, the proslavery plantation novel served to transform that image of the free slave in the swamp from its untouchable, abstract state to a form that could be possessed, understood, and controlled. Essentially, writers defending the institution would conjure forth the rebellious image in order to dispel it safely.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Librarians often say that every book is not for every child, but The True Blue Scouts of Sugar Man Swamp is” (The New York Times). Meet Bingo and J’miah, raccoon brothers on a mission to save Sugar Man Swamp in this rollicking tale and National Book Award Finalist from Newbery Honoree Kathi Appelt. Raccoon brothers Bingo and J’miah are the newest recruits of the Official Sugar Man Swamp Scouts. The opportunity to serve the Sugar Man—the massive creature who delights in delicious sugar cane and magnanimously rules over the swamp—is an honor, and also a big responsibility, since the rest of the swamp critters rely heavily on the intel of these hardworking Scouts. Twelve-year-old Chap Brayburn is not a member of any such organization. But he loves the swamp something fierce, and he’ll do anything to help protect it. And help is surely needed, because world-class alligator wrestler Jaeger Stitch wants to turn Sugar Man swamp into an Alligator World Wrestling Arena and Theme Park, and the troubles don’t end there. There is also a gang of wild feral hogs on the march, headed straight toward them all. The Scouts are ready. All they have to do is wake up the Sugar Man. Problem is, no one’s been able to wake that fellow up in a decade or four… Newbery Honoree and Kathi Appelt’s story of care and conservation has received five starred reviews, was selected as a National Book Award finalist, and is funny as all get out and ripe for reading aloud.

In armed packs they dragged the helpless Negro or Indian from his bed and stopped his hurried prayers with noose or buckshot. In North Carolina’s Robeson county, the Ku Klux did not see the vengeance it was stirring up: Henry Berry Lowery's gang of Swamp Outlaws, who ruthlessly protected themselves and the county's Indians and Negroes. "We kill anyone who hunts us, from Sheriff on down,” Lowery promised, and by forays out of the swamps to keep that promise he became the highest-bountied outlaw in the nation’s history. This tale of bloody revenge and brilliant survival is drawn from the gang’s real victims, benefactors, and descendants – all as told by the Yankee reporter from the New York Herald who joined the gang to get the story.

Book excerpt: Ten-year-old Mary Reed is known by those closest to her to be a reflective, intelligent, sensitive, unassuming young girl who abounds in the joys of growing up in the sparsely populated rural village of Bloomville. However, those family members and friends living in the harshly challenging woodlands of the sweeping pine forests of northern Wisconsin in the mid-1940's are fully unaware of the earth-shaking secret she conceals from them. Living within a matriarchal family, Mary, youngest of three children, inherits strength, wisdom and spirit of optimism and caring from her mother and grandmother. Above all else, she gains from them an understanding of the vibrant forces held in the wilds of nature. As much at ease in exploring the bordering swampland behind her home as she is in sharing dreams and laughter with friend s and her classmates in the village 's one-room schoolhouse, Mary develops a familial kinship with the creatures of the woods. Something separates Mary from other children, a strange power within her that frightens and saddens her and will forever remain hidden. She first notices this phenomenon that makes her different in the early years. Unlike other children, she is never ill, injured, or fearful of anything. Above all, there is the matter of "the light," a weird aberration that gives her unimaginable abilities to alter physical actions of people and objects. Unable to comprehend this oddity, she conceals it out of embarrassment , wishing for it to remain her secret. In the opening chapter of the book, Mary has rescued her brother Tom and sister Sandy from an attack by a mean bully of a man, notorious throughout their rural township for cruel senseless behavior. As the story unfolds, it becomes apparent that this bully, a man named Curt Olmeyer, is following orders from the local deputy-sheriff as part of a plot to drive away the sheriffs family and take his job. Their plot begins with harassment of people and evolves into the kidnapping of a young girl. Mary’s intervention locates and saves the victim, but Mary is hesitant to tell adults what she suspects. However, her opinionated and emotional older sister Sandy shares her belief in Olmeyer's role in the crime with girlfriends of the two sisters. The girls, Peggy, Bonnie, and Sandy agree to emulate the antics of comic strip heroes and go to the Olmeyer's farm to acquire evidence to implicate him. Mary disagrees with their idea, but goes along with it to protect them if need be. Peggy arranges for the girls to be driven out to a pond for skating. The pond is located near the Olmeyer farm. Neither the parents nor Tom or "boyfriend" Herbert knows of the girls plans. While at the farm, the girls find an abused dangerous creature waiting for them and soon learn the absent Olmeyers, Curt and his innocent and abused special needs younger brother, lzzy, are away from their house , kidnapping a second child. Mary's village is shaken by the news of the separate kidnappings of two children. For one the few times in her young life, her latent magical powers are unleashed to thwart the criminals' plans to harm the children, but the confrontation with the mastermind, the sinister deputy sheriff, and his deranged, but goofy henchman brings the struggle to her front door. Intense, powerful, exciting and humorous face -offs between Mary and the culprits continue to escalate until a climatic confrontation forces the adults in the community to discover the plot of the evil doers to bum down the school building on the evening of the annual Christmas program's final rehearsal. It is at the schoolhouse where the subplots are resolved within the flurry of Mary neutralizing the criminal boss while his accomplice flees to face a fatal confrontation with his own conscience. In the ensuing days, calm settles across the village and as Christmas day draws to a close and darkness descends upon the frozen swampland bordering the Reed hom

Jesse Braddock is trapped in a tiny cabin deep in the Everglades with her infant daughter and her ex-boyfriend, a wannabe reality TV star who turned out to be a lot prettier on the outside than on the inside. Broke and desperate for a way out, Jesse stumbles across a long-lost treasure, which could solve all her problems—if she can figure out how to keep it. The problem is some very bad men are also looking for the treasure, and they know Jesse has it. Meanwhile, Ken Bortle of Bortle Brothers Bait and Beer has hatched a scheme to lure tourists to his failing store by making viral videos of the “Everglades Melon Monster.” The Monster is, in fact, an unemployed alcoholic newspaperman named Phil wearing a Dora the Explorer costume head. Incredibly, this plan actually works, inspiring a horde of TikTokers to swarm into the swamp in search of the Monster at the same time villains are on the hunt for Jesse’s treasure. Amid this mayhem, a presidential hopeful arrives in the Everglades to start his campaign. Needless to say, it does not go as planned. In fact, nothing in this story goes as planned. This is, after all, Florida.
